Here's an odd one...windows XP will NOT shut down fully.

I tell it to restart/shut down, it closes windows, and then hangs at "Windows is Shutting Down" screen. 5 minutes or thirty minutes, it never shuts down. I have to manually hit the reset button or hold the power button to turn the PC off/restart.

any ideas?

Gigabyte NForce 2 Ultra 400 mobo
Radeon 9800 Pro with latest Omega drivers
Win XP Pro (No SP packs...tried it and HATED the changes)

Yeah, I sometimes have the same problem, I have NO idea why it does that. Could be because it's a long time since I formatted.

Try Ada-aware and the like :)

Just check it. Could well be something, do a system-smart scan and a drive specific one :)

I run ad-aware, spybot... well relatively all ad-aware stuff.

Yep, done that too. But im gonna format sometime this may... after I get my first paycheck. Since im gonna do some upgrades to my cooling system and comp at the same time. But I think that I kinda stole this thread from A2597.

Try the things badgy said, that might help. Also check your profile size in XP.

what kind of soundcard you got? I'd always get this problem when I had a soundblaster installed.. years back granted but might be useful?

My friend has the same problem on his nForce2/9800xt setup. Maybe it's a glitch that occurs when you have ATi and nForce2 drivers installed at the same time? No idea

adaware turns up nothing (I run that alot anyway) and this has happened since I put my PC together a few weeks back. (After my last mobo failed).

I suppose this doesn't really hurt anything, does it? (Having to turn it off manually, that is)

I actually had the same problem as you. With me, it started when I installed all of those windows updates. And whenever I tried to shut off my computer it would never fully shut off. I had to reformat and reinstall windows before my computer would shut down properly again.

I have the same problem, but randomly. Sometimes it shuts down right away, sometimes it takes up to five minutes, sometimes it doesn't at all. I'm gonna look up any solutions (I know there were a ton recommended for ME).
