I felt pretty much the same way - woke up this morning, put the radio on, heard that Obama won and I was overcome with joy. If this sounds arrogant on my part, I apologize, as it is not intentional, but America has really changed its image for the world - both for electing a democrat and a black man. I'm more relieved that the Democrats were prevented from gaining a 60 seat majority by more than a few seats. Filibustering can prevent an assault weapons ban or any other gun control from being pushed through.

Then how do you explain the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994-2004? Legislation that impacts gun rights HAS passed before. This had a serious threat of coming back if the Democrats gained a 60 seat majority.

I don't think there are more than a handful of people in this country that I feel are fully qualified to step into the presidency and know what to do and how to do it in the best way, and definitely don't feel like these people ever get nominated for presidential elections.

I am, however, extremely thrilled that there's an african-american president.

Man, I own a firearm, and I'm a Conservative-Democrat (A Blue-Dog,) same as my two senators (Jim Web and Mark Warner). There are also many semi and full Blue-Dogs in the US senate, as I type.
You are right; some assault rifles were banned in major urban areas, because of high crimes, but assault rifles are alive and well in the rest of the country. So believe me when I say "Rest assured" your amendment will not be touched, most southern states Democrats aren't like Nancy Pelosi, if they were, then maybe you would have something to worry about, but now you don't.

Some of you are utterly missing a very valuable point of: Why we are the way we are.
I don't argue you about why your countries roll like that, and the Irish affairs, and you shouldn't wonder why we tote guns.
And to throw you an advice: You should never dive into a discussion if you don't have the fundamental idea of our amendments.

Now, I will go out of my way and tell you what the discussion is about:
See, this is not about guns and whether they're safe or otherwise, whether the deer can shoot back or armed: it's our amendment itself that's being questioned. And that's where lots of Non-US always never get it, and trip.
To Make it brief and pretty short for you, "The Second Amendment" is part of our US 10 Bill Of Rights, which is designed to limit the power of our government over it's citizens... us. Therefore, untouchable. And if one of the 10 amendments of our Bill Of Rights is touched, will only mean the entire Bill Of Rights contaminated. Think of it as a Virgin.
Its our God Given Rights, the pillars of our nation, and what makes us so powerful and beautiful. No government body has the authority to even get close to our bill of rights.

Even if your first point is correct (sauce please) the second is wrong. Lack of gun control leads to deaths every single year, an uprising of some nutjobs would result in a lot of deaths for one or two years but fewer gun deaths every year would eventually balance that out.
