Willl HL2 hit the shelves on the same day around the world?
Or people in US will get the game first?

Thanks.

They're aiming for a worldwide release, but as far as I recall, there could very well be a 2 day difference between US and Europe like generally happens.

Expect what usually happens, an ontime US release date, then a europian date on the following friday (always ALWAYS happens) theres some dodgy law in england anyway about releasing games on fridays, although the steam release would be universal obviously.

Thanks.
What about the other parts of the world, like in Asia or South America?

Why can't they ship the games overseas a few days before the official release date?
Just like how the last Harry Potter book was sold.

becuase as soon as the CD's are ready they are sold.

you dont make money by keeping the CD's in a room waiting for some country that no1 has head of getting their shipment on time.

Harsh but true.

Makes a pretty compelling case to get it through Steam IMO. It's not like you can't backup the cache to CD or DVD.... When's the last time you read you half-life manual anyway? Oh, and save the trees! Yadda yadda yadda.. :p :afro:

they dont even ship the CD's, they just send a master to each country for pressing. there is no excuse why some countries should get it later, other than the US wanting to have everything first.

The US gets it first (greedy S.O.B's. yeah, yeah, I know I live there). Everyone gets it on steam at the same time, then there's the usual delay for the boxed version to hit the shelves in Non-US countries.

Translating... changing things according to some countries' regulations...

Not to mention a few people at a gamestore or shiping biz taking their copy early...

no they dont, the publisher gets the master and they print copies then are distrubuted to the countries. in this case its Vivendi. they get the Master CD then stamp the copies. those copies are then sent out. it would take even longer the way you explained it, there is usually 99.9% of the time only one master copy printed on CD. but still if the publisher only has one house to publish it doesn't matter how many copies there are.

so its faster to send 1000's of CD across the world than it is to send one, and print them in the country they are to be distributed?

No, Steam will ship with alot of languages, translating shouldn't take any time at all

or so says the Valve info thread

England is kinda different from the rest of the Europe...with Germany with their gore reducing thingies. It is possible that the game is released at the same time in all the major playing countries, including Scandinavia.

More talk about the world wide release: It's funny really, many games have been released same time everywhere but few games(or the puplishers) have been advertising that the game is so incredible that they are going to go worl wide at the same time.

Would anyone want a translated version of HL2? I bet not...with different voice acting and stuff, it becomes a different game!

Most people I know at least, would like to understand whats happening in games. Ie. I have studied English long enough to understand, but this is not always the case.
And the game doesn't change. Just voice acting and some texts (menus etc.).

Yea...actually I am also studying English but I just don't find playing a translated game is interesting. Not quite original.

I wonder what the German version will be like... didn't they replace the grunts in the German version of HL with robots?

I'm quite sure they have already done all that stuff.

In an old interview, Gabe said: "We had 150 actresses audition for the voice of Alyx". Actually her voice is gorgeous and I don't think the same work has been done for all the localized versions.
Although I'm Italian, I'll play the American version of the game. After having watched the HL2 movies over and over, now I feel that Alyx MUST have the voice I've always heard.
I must add that she's easily understandable, but some games are full of slang expressions (I dunno if you have ever played GTA 3) and playing them in their original language is just out of the question.

I think you could always do something like having the voice acting in the original English, and have subtitles in your native language.

In the above case, the best solution is English audio with English subtitles (I don't remember if there are any subtitles in GTA 3, btw). But sometimes it's hard anyway: I still have to understand what "Pop goes the weasel!" (from Gangland) means...

if i order it to be shipped to me (ati voucher) instead of shipped over steam will i have to wait longer than if i'd got it off steam or will they plan their posting to coincide with release?

Ahem, I allways thought they were trying for a world wide simultaneous release.

Maybe I am wrong, purhaps someone can check the email thread. Bound to be in there. Everything else is... :)

An old cereal box + some crayon related modifications will solve that problem.

WOAH - they released hl2 already? teh gfx on teh gman si teh b3st!!!!!!10100mg0101

True, i wuld like the HL2 box lol

-Quik question about steam, if i buy and download half life 2 for $40 or wot ever it is, is that the SP and MP edition ?

i'm not sure if you can directly buy hl2 i thought you had to subscribe to the 6$ a month thing and then get hl that way, and yes i believe you would be getting the sp/mp version unless specified other wise

I am planning to get the special edition so steam is out of the question for me.

and @ sai, you can just buy Half Life² trough steam but you can also get a subscription that will enable you to download some addons for free and the game. i think there are like 5 options

2 buying options trough steam and 3 options via retail. not sure what each option was, someone might be able to fill me in with that.

Yes.

Dont even argue beucase its quite obvious that you dont know how it works.

And not all countries have CD printing factories.

Even on broadband, HL2 will take a LONG time to download. The steam servers are going to be at max capacity, so we probably wont even be able to join a MP game until a week after release. Hopefully they will let you preload it about a week before release and then let you buy and activate it later, like they did with CZ.
