I have an almost two year old 2.0ghz 2400+xp cpu, and I'm thinking of upgrading my vid card to an x800pro or XT. I currently have a radeon 9700pro. I'm wondering if since these new cards are so fast if my CPU is going to hold it back so to speak. I've also been planning on upgrading my mobo and cpu to an ASUS SK8V and 64FX-53 but that may be further down the road.

if your going to spend that kind of money down the road dont get that mobo and cpu. get the asus a8v and fx-53 socket 939, they're a little bit faster.

Don't waste your time, the FX-53 will be old news in another 3-6months the FX55 is coming out soon, and so on.

yes it will be old news and wont even run tetris. so you know every processor thats normal at the moment will run like a 486 because the fx-55 will come out and give us 4 seconds faster of loading times. seriously disturbed give it up. your attempts to indirectly insult me are pathetic.

I think they are pretty funny. And you deserve it for being such a dick about your computer being better than everyone else's.

Some people have to pay bills.....

Ok, guys lets keep the flame war out of this thread, keep helpful advice in. =]

That gives me more reason to get the 53, the drop in price...

wtf are you talking about?!?!?!?!?! FX-53 is the best chip around now and an fx-53 ill be able to run any game in the next 2 years probably even later! FX-55 wont be much different!

You could run a 3000+ and be able run games 2 years from now....

i wold concentrate more on your graphics card for at least the next 12 months,
any amd/intel cpu at or above 2.0 ghz will be fine for quite a while.
i wold drop my bucks on an x800 in your case, should be no prob.

when ever i upgrade then run a gaming benchmark, the biggest change is ALWAYS when i upgrade to a new graphics card, no exception, end of story.

oh so a 3000+ will be fine for the next 2 years but an fx-53 will be old news.....ok good logic.

and ill give u 10 bucks if u find a time where i just bragged about my comp. and i payed for the comp idk how many times i have to tell u, and i have to pay the monthly payments for the car and the insurance.

Anyway, back on topic... if you upgrade, you'll see a perform, ance increase.... and of course your processor will hold it back some./.. but i wouldn't say "choke".

If you're gonna upgrade your mobo/cpu later as well, you should be fine...

although a 9700pro is nothing to scoff at.

You paid for your computer now? Don't make me use the search feature, I remember "my dad is buying me a computer, my mom bought me a car"....So don't bullshit there buddy.

And the only reason I would be jealous of anyone's pc, is because theirs is working right now....and thats about it, I don't care about other people's pc owning mine...I have mine the way I want it, not to impress people and show if in my sig.

i always put my specs in my sig, ive done it since my old 533mhz comp, its not to show off, its to let people know the rig im running. alot of people do it, just cuz u choose not to doesnt make it wrong. and what i said was my dad said i cant buy the comp (my money) if im getting a car as well because thats too much money. however i had already made a deal with my mom if she put the lease on the cts id pay the monthly bills, i didnt think id have to give u this much information for u to understand i wasnt bragging. im not saying ur jealous but ur making alot of false accusations against me.

If I am forgive me. Lets start off on a clean slate, then.

Fair enough. Sorry I was an ass to you. I didn't mean to sound like i was bragging cuz im not trying to. Truce buddy.

Apparently, Badger, you failed to read the last few posts where they did calm down and reached an understanding.

Anyhow, to answer the original question of the thread starter, yes, an X800 XT would be horribly bottlenecked by an AMD T-Bird 2400+

Edit: bahaha, fine, change your post then ;) :D

id get at least a 3000+ to pair with that card! a regular 3000+ is cheap anyway.

so anyway back to his question, and my response from earlier, looks like given your current config+cpu going from a 9700pro to x800 would pretty much double your frame rate in DX9 games, i found a farcry review w both cards at 1024x768 w everything on, went from 40 to 80+ ,, that should get you through at least the next 12/18 months of games if not more. play hard.. ed

Badger buys the beer

Isn't the only advantage of an FX processor over the normal one an unlocked multiplier?

and 200mhz....and a 1mb l2 cache....and a bunch of other technical shit i dont understand.

Thanks for the info, thoughts guys. I'll get the vid card before the new cpu and mobo. Though right now I'm debating whether or not to spend the moola on the GPU or a nice new pistol.

How much are the 64FX-51s now that there is a 53?

The FX-51 is about 745$ Retail.
There is two versions of the FX-53. One runs on the Socket 939 platform while the other runs on the Socket 940, the FX-51 also runs on the 940. The only difference is what type of ram you can use, which both have pros and cons.
FX-53 (Socket 940) - 811$
FX-53 (Socket 939) - 875$

If you decide you can go to the 940 then you can actually buy Opteron's instead, same thing as the FX except the name. The Opteron 148 2.2GHz CPU (Same as the FX-51) costs about 404$. The Opteron 150 2.4GHz CPU (Same as the FX-53) costs about 638$.
The reason they are at lower cost is because they are marketed towards businesses and they compete with the Xeon for Price, not the Pentium 4.
The reason the high-end Athlon 64's are higher priced is because Intel does not have a shipping desktop CPU that competes with it.

If you don't wanna mess with all that then just go for the Socket 939.
There is nothing else that will make you want the 939 or 940 versions except the memory differences and cost. Unless of course you are counting on dual core CPUs. ;)

Heh. Very cynical. I like.

Well hey, the highest shipping Intel CPU is only the 3.4GHz.
AMD has the 3400+, 3500+, 3700+, 3800+ and FX-53.

Intel's new 3.6GHz isn't shipping yet and it is based on the Prescott core (and on the LGA775 socket) which is slower than the Northwood core, especially in most games.

But will the FX-53's be discontinued when the 55 comes out? The 51 was when the 53 came out.

Even if it is there will probably be alot of stock hanging about which will still need to be sold. :)

Yes, they will stop making that chip after a new FX comes out.
There is only 'one' FX. The one that is in production that is...
It will always be the top performing CPU on the A64 line.

So has AMD released the specs yet? Cause wasn't the 53 just a 200mhz increase on the cpu speed? Hopefully it's more than just that this time, it just doesn't seem worth it. But I'd guess the 55 should be able to beat the P4EE in more benches.

The Athlon 64 FX-55 will run at 2.6GHz with the CG stepping on the 130nm.
The Athlon 64 FX-57 will run at 2.8GHz and it will be a 90nm part, along with all the little improvements that they will include. Link

Remember, the memory controller works at the CPU's speed since it is on the chip. ;)

if i down the road wanted to buy an fx-57, would i be able to just switch the chips? will they be socket 939's?

oh ****in sweet i dont have to buy a whole new comp for once! i made a stable investment!

Some people have to pay bills.....

his computer is better than everyone elses... whats your point? will everyone stop bashing him because he has a nice pc...

its not his fault you have to pay bills... im sure he has to pay his credit card bill...

so pack it in... its very lame... anyway back on topic

yes your cpu will probably bottleneck your GPU but dont worry too much id say get it it will run in your PC GREAT! and when you upgrade later down teh line... you will get another performance boost from your GPU ;)
