Would you be pissed off if there is no final boss in HL2?

HL2 doesn't have a final boss?

I was wondering, if Breen is the puppetmaster, and he's the one you're going to fight with in the end, then the most probable is that there is no final boss in the usual definition of the expression.

Gabe said Gordon has to prove to be " a better scientist" than Breen. IMO, that sounds like a final "puzzle" instead of a final "boss"

What do you guys think ?

Rupertdvb said "Yes".

Why man? want to battle Nihilanth's brother?

merc has already said there is a final boss. On top of that there has got to be something to nuke in an appalling and interesting way.

merc mentioned, after his visit to Valve, that he was able to fight the "final boss" character.

Oh damn.

Ignore this thread then. But I guess there's still the possiblity.... :burp:

No I wouldn't

Who says there has to be a final boss?

A suitably epic Final Level (Freedom Fighters does this well) would be better.

Merc never said it was the final boss...he just said who he fought seemed like a boss and was towards the end of the game. Second -last boss anyone?

Striders are hard enough...

Nooooo... I'm pretty sure he said it was the final boss.

That said, I don't really care if there is or isn't one. Games are about the journey, not the destination.

I guess there doesn't need to be a boss, but some kind of conclusion/cliff hanger or something.

It sounds very intriguing... how are you going to be a better scientist? What will you have to do? I would imagine that HL2 does have a traditional end boss as well, it just won't be Breen. Who knows.

That would be interesting. It actually got me wondering if there is a game out that didn't have a boss at the end, but had a puzzle instead. Might never have been done before.

I don't know Freedom Fighters, but an epic battle sounds cool. The last remains of human resistance versus the aliens...

I wonder if gordon will make a deal with the dead to fight for him ;)

The Strider is enough for me to buy the game, the ending of the game, boss or not, will be so binding you WON'T THINK ABOUT IT. Even if you "need a final boss" and there isn't one, you'll only realize that a week later, and say to yourself that the game still rocked so who cares.

Remember, you heard it from me first.

Edit: In response to above, I seriously doubt it'll be an actual Resistance VS. Aliens, why couldn't it be Aliens VS. Aliens or Aliens (W/you) VS. Resistance? It's been said that there are different alien classes, which colide and then start a war against eachother, basically.

there would definitly a BOSS...Trust me...

whats the purpose of playing a game with out a boss????

I'm sure of it.. your own crowbar will turn against you!

If I wanted to strafe around in a big circle emptying rockets and grenades into a muscular cabbage wearing a loincloth I'd have stayed in the 90's.

There is no way we can guess what the end boss will be, if you tried to decide the end boss in HL1 with the media and info they showed you couldn't have guess Nilhalanth, maybe the G-man, but not Nil.

I wouldn't be pissed at all, I would be pissed if it was the G-man or one of the bosses from the other games.

A hoard of Gargs wouldn't be too bad.

Not necessarily. I will feel unsatisfied and frustrated if there isn't some glorious climax though, end-boss, situational or otherwise.

My guess is the end boss will maybe some sort of modified Strider, which is a bit harder to kill, or maybe just several striders which you fight alongside the restitance. its not the last enemy/ies but rather a guard before you can enter the citadel for the final confrontation with Breen.
Vote: No. Bosses suck. (no intern jokes please)

Yes..

but don't forget that boss isn't necessarily a single entity. It might be somthing cool like the citidel itself, trying to fight and destroy that.

There has to be a final decisive finish to it. It can't jsut suddenly stop.

I was thinking about this... I mean..

What on earth could be the end boss....

It would have to be absolutely amazing whatever it was so that we leave the game on a high.... but what will it be?!

i dont want the citadel to go up in flames, to cliched.

i would rather you find a way to stop it, shut i down

I'd like a final boss. Something that tells me "This is it. The pinnacle. The denoument. This is the ****ing moment." Nihilanth did that for me, especially in that small area where you hear him calling to you, you hear the voices of Black Mesa personnel, and there's that giant red teleporter in front of you. It really got my adrenaline going.

However, I don't want just some big ****-off monster for the hell of it. I liked how there was a degree of strategy when it came to Nihilanth, with the crystals and his head opening up and all.

Also, I don't want the boss to be an excuse to throw out good level design and plot. It all needs to be woven together seamlessly.

i think its Breen, i dont think you will actaully kill him. You will probably have to stop him and whatever he is trying to do. I think the Combine army will fail and City 17 wil be over run by xen wildlife (ant lions and what not).

Because Like Gabe said, one group is very wrong and the other is wrong. Eli will probs die (picked from an interview) and Alyx and Kliener will relise that what they were trying to do to stop the Alien invasion was wrong. Breen will reise that what he was trying to do to stop the Alien invasion was wrong.

And from the same interview as where i learned that Eli may judt die, Gabe said that gordon had a major problem to solve...

Now Breen may think shit, i have screwed up. Then Gordon will have to solve it...however that may be.

Maybe Breen will commit suicide....who knows.

I still think it would be some kind of combine mega-monster controlled by Breen. Like a huge bio-mechanical thing.

I guess The 7th Guest was before your time, then. :rolling:

Are you telling me that killing nihilanth wasn't a puzzle? Remember that you had to destroy the 3 glowing spikes close to the "ceiling" and then shot him enough for the brain to open. Then you had to use those jumpy thingies to murder his brain.

HL2 and the movie Equilibrium seem very closely related..... Maybe Breen is actually a dummy leader, a figurehead for someone else.

Can someone tell me, since when has Breen become evil?

I think the player should have to solve a way to destroy the boss, but it should not be easy after the player knows it. I hate when that happens.

I wouldn't be mad if there was no classis end boss, it's a really old way of finishing a game. It's in fact one of the reasons why i stopped playing so much on my GC.
Those games are good, and I enjoyed playing them, but the classis bosses just started to annoy me, it rarely made me feel like they made the game better.
I say it's time for something new :)
