Say you're eating a packet of sweets or a bag of chips and one falls to the floor, would you pick it back up and eat it? I'm not talking ten- or five-second rule here. There are some people who under no circumstances would eat something that had touched the floor or ground, while others would. There is no "sometimes" or "maybe" option. Have you ever, in your adult life, eaten off of the floor or ground?

I have done so many times and have never suffered ill-effects. Now, if I dropped a crisp into a puddle of mud I wouldn't touch it again, but I have eaten chocolate and other things off tiles and carpets many times. I'd be a bit more cautious outside but I have eaten off of pavement once or twice. Once I was at the cinema with my father and two of my friends, one of my mates dropped his nachos all over the flood. My dad, never having had nachos decided to try them out, so he bent down and took a sample off of the carpet. He survived!

Is my family made of disgusting bastards or is it perfectly reasonable to eat off the floor?

Discuss.

If I'm the one who dropped it, and I didn't drop it into anything nasty, then I'd totally eat it.

It also builds immunities. :D

My mom, who is of a medical profession, facepalms at the idea of the five-second rule. Once it hits the ground, it's already got crap all over it, and no amount of seconds will do you any good.

Yes.

this just happened to me like 10 mins ago. i was eating popcorn and kernel fell onto the floor. i immediately threw the bastard out. if it fell onto my lap or chair i would have eaten it after i blew it off. also i hardly ever eat something off the floor...thats where the nastiest stuff is usually.

Usually no, unless I can either rinse it off or cut off the outer layer.

I dropped a bagel on the floor a couple of days ago, which made me really sad because I can't throw away a whole mostly-good bagel. So I sliced off all the outside crust part (which still made me sad because it had all the sesame seeds and stuff) and ate the inside.

No. I do sometimes if it's off the plate onto the table.

I never vacuum or wash my floors, so no.

Poll is kind of flawed.

Technically, everyone should answer "Yes, if I think it's still good" because the "no" only applies if the person doesn't think it still looks good.

You intend to be asking "do you ever think something dropped on the floor still looks good"

Also, my main reason for not eating something off the floor isn't really germs, it just feels gross.

So I guess what I'm saying Riom, is that you should have just left out all the extra shit and just put Yes or No.

If it's dry food, I'll eat it after blowing it off & inspecting it. Moist food no...although I have rinsed off fallen meat products before, like hot dogs.

Also thisss
If it's on my own floor I'd eat it. I'd never do it in a public place though.

**** yeah I would. Can't go wasting food now.

Well, yeah I often do that, but it also depends on where I dropped it.

Oh damnit, I thought you meant under normal circumstances. You meant under any circumstances.

Damnit, once again I am thwarted by my not reading the post before answering the poll.

I do all the time, don't care what floor it came off of either TBH. I honestly couldn't give a flip about germs. Don't get me wrong, I have great hygiene habits (shower once or twice daily), but germs on food or whatever just don't bother me. And I never get sick, so it must not be as bad as people make it out to be.

There were two occasions on which I ate from the floor.

The first was when I was in the first grade. We were in line walking down a hallway, and I saw one of those Jollyrancher-style candies on the floor - don't remember if it was green or orange. What I do remember is that it was completely covered in dust, but I ate it anyway. For the next few days I had a high fever.

The second time I didn't exactly eat off the floor. This was in the 5th grade and I saw a hotdog in the garbage can. I remember thinking it was a waste to throw a hotdog that had a single bite eaten off it. So I took it casually and started eating it, without a care in the floor. My friends laughed in surprise.

It depends on the clean-ness of the floor and the type of food. Of course dropping it on ANY floor, unless you're in Antarctica or something, is going to cause bacteria to get on it, but what is your immune system for anyway?

If it's in the school cafeteria, better known as a petri dish, then **** no. But if it's at home or some other non-public, non-everyone treads the shit off their shoes here place, then yes.

I do it all the time.

I figure ancient mankind got along just fine without being a giant pussy about how old food was, or where it had "been", so I don't see why I can't do the same.

I remember once me and my friend were too broke to buy food at a baseball game, so we waited till the game was over and looted all the leftovers in the aisles. Probably got a couple of different types of herpes from that one...

Good times!

One time my mom dropped an entire dish of lasagna on the floor and she picked it up and made us all eat it.

I don't believe you, I am pretty sure that you're lying.

Yes, I sadly do. But mostly at home. In cinemas and school the floors are unspeakably rude and you will get AIDS from touching them. But at home it's okay. If it's dry of course.

Depends on what it is... If I got a bagel covered in cream cheese, and the cream cheese hits the ground, then no... The crap sticks to it, but if it's just a chip then yes I will.

I can never finish an entire bag of chips before they get stale anyway, so just get another chip.

No regardless of what it is, but I'm very careful not to drop my food. There is little in life more heartbreaking then slaving away in the kitchen making dinner only to have your meal hit the floor.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Depends on how I feel at that moment. At times I'm not worried at all, and other times I'm disgusted at the thought.

Mostly depends on the floor.

No. I don't even believe in the, "10 second rule".

The only way I'd eat something off the floor is if I was famished.

Depends on if it's my own floor or not. If it's my floor, I would probably mutate a third testicle or something.

Well yes, my house is extremely clean, because my mom is well a clean addict so it's clean the house everyday so =/ what can I say it's not bad to eat anything off the ground lol.

I would in most circumstances. It seems unlikely that it's going to do me any actual harm (above and beyond ordinary contact incurred in ordinary situations). I mean, come on!

I recall a teacher telling me not to eat from the floor. Her reasoning was this "Haven't you ever seen a dog wipe it's bottom?"
Pretty convincing really, although we were on tarmac at the time.

I draw the line on anything moist getting on my food, If I can wipe it clean then it's fine!!
