In preparation for the upcoming retail launch of World of Warcraft, we will be taking the North American open beta servers offline on Thursday, November 18. While this will mark the end of the open beta test, there will still be some work left for us to do. To provide the best experience possible at launch, we will be making numerous final optimizations to our hardware based on the data we've acquired during the open beta test.

During our closed and open beta test phases, thousands of improvements were made to World of Warcraft. Those changes were made through game-client patches and updates to the game's server and database infrastructure.

As we moved closer to retail, we continued to make changes and optimize all of the code that makes up World of Warcraft until we reached the point where we felt we could create a gold master -- the version of the game that's currently being pressed onto the discs which will be available for purchase at retail.

Likewise, these processes must also take place on the server side to ensure that no out-of-date code, which could corrupt the retail version of the game, still exists. Before the retail version of the code can be installed, the current hardware must be wiped clean. This also includes the information on current accounts and characters that are being played on our test servers. So that all World of Warcraft players will be able to make a fresh start on our community site at launch, the same procedure will be taking place for the North American beta forums when the open beta test ends.

We realize that you've grown attached to your characters, and we're sorry that the end of the open beta test will require you to part ways with them. However, with the retail launch of World of Warcraft on November 23 comes the opportunity to begin a new adventure in Azeroth on fresh, untouched servers. Along with that, you'll have the knowledge that you played an instrumental role in the creation of a game of epic proportions that players will enjoy for many years to come.

We greatly appreciate all the time you've spent with us testing World of Warcraft, and we look forward to seeing you in-game!

In other news, WoW will be launched this winter in Europe :D

NB: that part in bold goes for all the char-wipe naysayers hehe. See? I told you so! Haha!

Yep i'm gutted :( Gotten addicted to it now. Winter goes on till febuary so it could be a while but if you pre-order in EU you get a guranteed spot in beta so i think i'll be pre-ordering :p

Edit/ With there being a Blizzard Europe (in france) who will be in control of the EU servers and GM'ing does that mean they will patch the servers too? ..erm...what i mean is will the EU WoW retail be different to the US WoW retail when patches start coming or is the main Blizzard company in control of the entire world regarding patches?

I think the core team of Blizzard will handle the patching, the localized teams are just there for customer service and support; game masters, billing support, etc... The game should remain the same. :)

They've said they will announce the final beta test plans for europe next week, so it's quite possible that the EU version will come out before the end of the year hehe.

Yeah i can't wait till next week for the announcement. I didn't mean to sound negative...its not like i want it to come out next year...i want it NOW!!!

I'm quite glad of the localized servers though because now when us EU players start we won't be joining the masses of americans who are all capped/high level...its just a shame i can't play with the american mate i was gunna play with :(

I know how you feel, I too am addicted to WoW, however this is great news because the release is pretty close at hand and we have hl2 now :)

I had WoW keep me sane until Hl2's release, now Im playing Hl2 until WoW, then WoW until Hl2 mods/expansions/Tf2 (btw has anyone asked the deal on TF2 lately?)

by the way HL2 is the best FPS I have ever played, I was not dissapointed in the slightest (only thing so far is I wish I saw the g-man more/talked to him :( )

Well, come November 23 I will be playing World of Warcraft. The goodnews is that I have no classes from the 24th to the 29th. Seriously can't wait for this game.

I just played my last session, I absolutely wanted to Pvp so I went to Booty Bay and hopped on a ship to the Barrens. Apparently everybody else had the same idea hehe, take a look at what happened:

just took a couple of screens.

i went on a raid too. first with my undead char (only lvl 15). i got wasted lots :( i had more fun with my human pally, swatting some horde in Tristfal Glades and Durator :D gave some random people all my money, one lucky fellow just inherited 5g 76s 44b :E

The beauty of Ironforge :D

Yeah, I said goodbye to my level 25 hunter last night... ;( I finished off with lots o' PvP... first we owned the Alliance in Hillsbrad, then we owned them in Darkshore. We even killed a couple of the Auberdine GUARDS! :O

I wish i played it more, although i couldnt have really because of Half-life 2's release. Still, i found the first missions really poor and just running around delivering things all the way across the map.
I was a level 8 Gnome when it finished. I wasn't having allot of fun.

It ended? I was to busy with hl2. Stoped playing wow anyways as I did'nt want to get very far only to get wiped. I'll play retail.

Of coruse you never had any fun, for one you only got to level 8, and secondly you played a gnome.

i really wanted to get my character up to level 40 on the closed beta server, but unfortunately i have a lot of exams at the moment so i havent been able to play the game scince the open beta was released ;(

Im trying to decide if i should buy the game or not, i want to buy it later but just worried i wouldnt be able to find the collectors edition anymore. I know if i buy this game im gonna go deep into it and get addicted, oh well ill probably buy it later.

Noooooo! Damn :( I was getting attached to my Warrior LOL. Never mind, it's definately a game I'll be playing when it comes out in the UK. I say definately, it all depends on the price of subscription. Money is tighter than I deluded myself into thinking it was.

They have'nt mentioned nothing about its monthly price over here...or even a release date (though next week is when we get some EU news!) but i would expect a monthly price of about £7 - 10 and obviously the longer you sign up the cheaper it becomes e.g say 1 month was £10 it would'nt cost £60 for 6 months...it would be more like £45 - 50.

I found some answers for the EU segregation thing, thought I'd post it here: basically Europeans choose their own servers, for example a swede buys a copy from the UK, he can play on the server he chooses but he will have the quests and everything translated in the server's language. So... this means most europeans are going to pre-order from the UK and swarm the UK server, I know I will hehe. :)

sounds good.

although, only 1 UK server? :O

do you know how many there'll be for the whole of europe?

I don't know but since the US had around 40 or more for the beta (and probably that amount for retail) I think we'll get around 20-30 in total for Europe but I'm really guessing. The latest estimate for European retail players was over 300,000 players, so you can try to guess too how many servers we'll have :)

Edit: We will know for sure how many exactly once it hits Open beta I suppose hehe.

Supposedly they was letting 3000 people onto a single server on the US open beta but they'll probably lower that to 2000 - 2500 a server unless they can sort out the server database problem when giving out items etc..which you probably experienced in the open beta...i know i did, died several times because of it to. :(

I hope there isn't one UK server .. :/ we might be a small country be we sure are'nt short of population.

Im going to break sooner or later and buy this game, does anyone know if they will sell timecards ? like you know how city of heros has them.

I'm sure i read somewhere, sometime, that they will have timecards for this but dont quote me because im not certain it was for WoW.

Yeah I know for a fact they are selling gamecards or timecards in the US, so they will surely sell them in Europe as well. Btw very cool avatar Tork

what are timecards?

I haven't seen any myself but I suppose they're cards with serial numbers on 'em, you pay cash in a shop for a six month card for example then you enter the serial # in your account info and you get to play six months. It's basically for people who do not use credit cards.

Oh and check out this WoW comic strip, pretty cool :)
