Wow, Gordon's design has come a long way since HL1 was in development-

Older than the paleolithic period.

Oh god, please mods, lock this now before we all have to relive the HL Nostalgia picture postings.

Yeah, I'm really not sure what would possess them to think that a lumberjack would make a good scientist.

Yeah, it is old..almost 7 years old....

-Big Brother, you need to fix your sarcasm detector.

OT: I wonder why they made all those scientists and barneys have such scary expressions... And cartoony posture...

Weird stuff.. I would love to hear some interviews on that.

I think they've put Ivan the Space Biker in Raising the Bar. And a short explaination. And they stated how the reached the decision to name him Gordon Freeman, they wanted to name the main character after some philosphers...and someone eventually said Gordon Freeman...not sure that's a philospher's name though

Also Gordon is a combination of the best features of many different people. I think that includes Marc Laidlaw. The pictures are in Raising the Bar.

Ivan the Space Biker IS the guy in the pic...

It's the nickname for the guy in the pic, that's all. Valve's joke.

Also the topic name: Wow, Gordon's design has come a long way since HL1 was in development

It certainly has...now he doesn't even have a model, he's a grey blur in HL2.

Forums police vegeta lol...cant complain good enough! Looks professionally made ;)

Ivan is just the first version of the character they were making, they simply changed his beard to a 'stylist goatee' and added a pair of dashing glasses and Gordon was created.

this place is going downhill.

though this was old to some, it's new to others.

the design of gordon hasnt come that far... infact its took a few steps back...

In Halflife2 hes just a pair of hands! have you never typed "third_person" into the console ? :p

yes, in Half Life 1 you could actually see the model. I was very, very disappointed when I typed third_person in the HL2 console and noticed there was only a pair of hands. I eventually got over it, though I must admit I felt, and still feel, a bit cheated ;)

Hectic Glenn and Vegetable man are like metrocops...and the mods are like combine soldiers.

join the club goethe.

part of me thinks they went down that route because the game does cast reflections and they didnt want to chance you seeing yourself.

but the other part of me... the part that talks sence.... says "andy... They just didnt have the time"

Yeah, I recall seeing an old preview of HL in a Sierra catalogue... heheh, even with a shot of Ivan from the rear and a Barney that looked like he'd been made out of building blocks I thought it looked cool.

To be frank, I'd actually quite like to play the "Quiver" incarnation (i.e., the Half-Life that was deleted to make way for the Half-Life we all know and love, and I know Quiver was only considered as a title for a very brief period of development), simply to see how things changed. I'm a sucker for Director's Cuts and suchlike. As long as they're not so bad they make my optical nerves fester.

There's a lot of technical reasons for why they didn't have a model visible in HL2 atall.

In HL1 it wasn't so bad, no ragdolls and no vehicles. In HL2 its a different story, there's a lot of times having a player model would have been a big headache to create, and add a lot of extra work for the engine. Sure, you could mod it, but still, there's a lot of problems involved, and if it wasn't perfect (and it wouldn't have been, simply cause of the trouble to do it in the first place) people would complain about it far more than they would having no model atall.

That and in a way the wanting to keep people feeling part of the game thing does sorta make sense. If HL had been an RPG it would have been a different story. But for a FPS it makes sense.

Good point, I didn't think of that... My personal theory is that there is no model because the less polygons the faster the game runs *in theory*. I would be willing to sacrifice, however, some performance in order to have the satisfaction of knowing that the model is there, even if I play in first person mode ;)

whilst you make a convincing argument elf... they have models for people in HL2 deathmatch and that has ragdolls etc... and thus I would of expected could be implimented in a similar fashion...

OR if not in the singleplayer game we should be allowed to be godly gordon in the deathmatch at least!..

oh ... I dont like modding it in as it isnt a valve design and thus... not truely gordon freeman:p

That's not an old HL1 screenshot! That's what happens when you're exposed to too many cosmic waves, you end up as a hairy dwarf!

Also, you should see the movies on that site they are funny to see.

I think it would be awesome if they would release the old halflife (quarter-life?) so that we could check it out... However that could ruin the HL story, like a bad sequel, even thouh this is infact a prequel :)
