I've played through most of doom 3 and found it quite boring and unsurprising. Jsut the ravenholm chapter in Hl2 is scaring the heck out of me. With not knowing whats around the corner I can't seem to get noervous once I've cleared n area.

Hats of to Valve for a wonderful game that surpasses D3 by leaps and bound.

I agree - I thought that it was funny how HL2 managed to outdo the whole of Doom3 in one set of levels - and they were *fun*, as opposed to Doom3, most of which I found an irritating chore.

Awesome atmosphere, Grigory is so much fun, those screaming zombies and that burning corpse heap are really nasty, the wallcrawlers are breathtaking, the shotgun is so satisfying, the physics are just so entertaining and the level layout is good.

Best set of levels in a FPS I've ever played, though I haven't finish the game yet. ;)

Those wallcrawlers scare the living sh*t outa me, try playing in Surround Sound!

OMG don't even talk about those fast zombies...they really ARE scary...One night I woke up in a sweat because of those fast zombies..I was worried I was gonna have a nightmare about ravenholm..I didnt, but worrying about it in my sleep made me wake up sweating lol...

I didn't mind Ravenholm at all until the second time I played. The fast zombies were just annoying (excluding the part where they burst through the roof) but the second time playing I'm scared shitless. T'wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so damn hard to one-shot them. They bob while running, so headshots are quite difficult.

didn't want to give out any spoilers myslef but those wall crawler zombies are in fact the scariest IMHO. Even those new headcrabs scar the heck out of me. Harder to kill and the high pitched sounds they have are scary.

Yep Grigory is quite hillarious! Hl2 the best game at least in the FPS category. World of warcraft comes out next week am looking fowrard to that too. Boy my wife is going to kill me.

I had to go to the docs after playing ravenholme, in surround sound. I was waking up in heaps of sweat and couldnt sleep from the horrible sounds of those zombies and headcrabs :(

Doc said it was a psychological disorder.

Raveholme Syndrome :dozey:

I just finished it and i must say it's the best game I ever played.

I played quite a bit of games Far Cry and Doom3 included, but HL2 beats both hands down.

Only two things need improvement, the sound stutter and the team AI,for the rest I am happy with it.

Doubtful, as google comes up with nothing for raveholme, but it does say "did you mean: ravenholm" :p

OMG the roof part was FREAKY. I was like, "WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY?! ANd I go to the edge and look down and here it comes popping up! That was scary.

And once my projector is fixed, I'm playing the Ravenholm chapter to experience the 6.1 surround.

Shush, they don't know... who is they you ask? They is them... /runs away :imu: < imu for no reason XD

Please, I never jumped (or was scared) once in HL2. I thought Doom 3 and the original Half-Life were far scarier than HL2.

Ravenholm didn't spook me at all. I guess I was more distracted by setting zombies on fire than being scared.

sorry, but doom 3 is way scarier than ravenholm. overall half life 2 far surpasses d3, but if you think ravenholm is scarier, you need to change out of your rocketship underwear :D

Spoiler

That part at the end of the level where you have to wait for the rev to send a cart, and the wallcrawlers start climbing up the drains was the freakiest. I about shat myself.

Intense

I didn't find the original half-life frightening...Course I bought it 2 years late...

The only thing in Half-Life that scared me was headcrabs around dark corners in vents :p

Ravenholm was scarier than doom 3, especially getting on the cart. I thought they would climb on wire and slide down on U. LOL

I played doom 3, and don't tell me u got scared from it. The whole atmosphere in doom is dark all the time. So it just comfortable lol
Dumbass ID makers forgot that humans get used to thing for while of exposure.

So that why ravenholm was scarier because u never seen in HL2, and once u passed it u satisfied u survived it. LOL

I thought doom 3 was way scarier, i jumped far more times in doom3 that I did in hl2.

Doom 3 was scarier in the whole cheap thrills category (ooh.... a monster appeared right in front of me and i couldn;t see it cause the goddamn game's so dark, i'm scared) but HL2's Ravenholm had a better atmosphere, it seemed more like a living town that had been aken over by the zombies, just seemed a little more down to earth than a space station on Mars

I can't quite decide yet which is scarier - I have played Doom3 and got plenty of Jolts and just love the dark atmosphere (you have to be in the right mindset to WANT to enjoy it - like a good horror film), the monsters didn't actually "scare" me so much as the sounds, the lighting, the atmosphere - just shing my torch up some steps and seeing the shadow dance around the dark area up there was more "scary" than trying to kill the waves of enemies.. either way I love it.

I am almost through Ravenholm at the moment, and I have to admit, it is damn fine at what it does.. some of the moments in it have made me litteraly shake (hairs going up on my arms and neck too), I play alone in darkened conditions with the temperature quite low (ie central heating off) to enhance the immersion ;) - and more than once I actually felt quite "scared" which is strange considering the amount of horror films and scary games I indulge in and I am 30 so hardly like I'm 8 or something... but it makes me feel that way for some reason!... This is the first time since Undying and System Shock 2 that things felt quite so eerie even when you knew the "score".

When the fast zomboids scale the drain pipes and you are up there and can hear and see the top of the drain pipe rattling is a genius addition. The black head crabs are disgusting and I dread seeing them as I can never nail them with one shot..

well done on the scares valve.

Doom3 is scary like a slasher film: MONSTER! MONSTER! LOOK OUT! IT'S REALLY ****ING DARK! MONSTER BEHIND YOU!

Ravenholm is scary like a very atmospheric suspense/horror movie (scenes from Signs come to mind) that just keeps you on the edge of your seat because you never know when something could ju... HEADCRAB!

I've actually had to reload savegames because I was startled so bad that I fell off a building

But Ravenholm isn't the end of it. Just wait until you turn a corner to find:
A flaming jumping zombie lunging at you from a pit of fire. AAAHH! fun stuff, hehe

yeah , I fell off too when I was twisting around so much trying to lock onto the damn things with the shotgun, I just panicked and took a dive... while I'm doing it is not what you would call "fun" but as with good horror it is fun when you look back (or look forward to playing it again).

lol yup. Second time the wallcrawlers attacked I backed right off the edge of a building.

This is like the sixth time i have mentioned this game BUT I REALLY LIKE IT!!

System shock2 Find it, buy it, play it be scared out of your minds It was released shortly after hl1 so it may be a hard find, but if you come across it buy it its well worth it

It makes doom3 look like that counting vampire pussy on sesame street

The drainpipe bit was too predictable to me. I nailed all the zombies before they even got to the top. But Ravenholme was 'creepy' rather than scary for me. The howls were chilling I thought. At first I didn't know wether Father Grigori was on my side or not... nearly shot him. Seemed too twisted to be a good guy!!

I must admit you can't beat a bit of flaming zombie action. After playing a long forgotten game called 'Blood' (if you have played it you will know what I mean. It pioneered the art of flame-related comedy) I think burning corpses are a pre-requisite of any game! I dont think I ever used a weapon! Barrels all the way hehe!

Yeah, maybe, but just the fact Valve have bothered to make the drainpipes move (rattle) is a neat addition, obviously things climbing up walls is old news.. just pretty well done and heightened the suspense.

The howls and noises were pretty chilling. :)

I didnt think any of them were scary. Except those fast zombies. They freak me out more then the Itchysaurs in HL1. D3 was way to dark and predicatable. But in Ravenholm you never know whats coming up. I told my wife to play D3 and Ravenholm and she was FREAKIN scared out of both of them. You could probally hear her screaming a mile away! Well maybe not. She didnt like D3 too much cause of its darkness. She liked Ravenholm better because it wasnt dark.

I found Doom³ more stressful than scary.
It really was a pain playin it.
With all the flickering and moaning and so on.
Intense but in the wrong way.
HL2 plays awesome and is very well paced.
Wouldn't call it scary though.

On the first slow elevator part I blockaded a door, only for those damn leaping fast zombies to catapult themselves through the skylight. Well, actually, first time I played through that I missed the elevator alltogether and divebombed onto the car below. Somehow I managed to survive...

'Course, after the skylight incident I just reloaded and blasted the hell out of the things as they scrambled up the drainpipe ;)

I never "jumped" at anything in hl2 or doom 3. The first half life is the only game thats made me jump. But, In hl2, there were a lot of parts that made me nervous. Like when the fast zombies were coming, you would see them in the distance jumping across roof tops, then you'ld lose sight of it. Then your sitting there waiting knowing its coming but you dont know where or when. then suddenly the zombie leaps at you from a nearby rooftop...

I find this kind of fear more fun than jumping. Sure jumping gives you that cool adrenaline rush and that tingly chill, but the deep fear in the pit of your stomach, gradually building up a feeling of intensity, slowly making your heart race faster and faster. Thats the fear i like.

Doom 3 didnt do either of these, it pretty much just pissed me off. For me it wasnt, Oh no an enemy spawned be hind me, i wasnt expecting that *jumps with fear. it was more like WHAT THE HELL!!! i just killed all the guys back there, why the **** do i have to do it again!

yeah ravenholm was awesome. I love that one part when you first see the fast zombies shrieking and jumping from rooftop to rooftop. Still the scariest part in anygame was probly in the origonal Half-life when you would slip into water filled with icthiosaurs, seeing those things come through murky water would almost make me wet myself. Arg, why couldn't they have been in HL2 though? There were a enough parts with water for valve to chuck in a icthiosaur. idk, mayb they're holding back for HL3 or an expansion pack, sales are everything.

Actually, you see the Icthiosaurs for a brief moment when you teleport from Dr. Kleiner's lab (near the start of the game).

Personally, I didn't like Ravenholm that much but that's just because I don't like it when it gets scary :D I like more action, like in the urban fighting levels near the end of the game.

Blood was awesome.

Indeed. But Blood 2 was awful.

Burning cultists / burning zombies = same!. It's the first law of FPS games. All zombies must be highly flamable.

Water Hazard wiht Ithycasaurus

Man, when u were teleporting in the beginning of the game, and u see this alien water creature coming at u!!!! I thought it would be in Water Hazard!!! so @ first I was bit nervous to step in the water :cheese:

They were in HL but sadly missing in HL2.

yeah at the start it is quite scary when the it comes to you!!

I didn't find it scary at all...I got one shock and that was at the coast when I climbed up some rocks and then suddenly this fast mutant shit zombie came flying at me...

Honestly, although Ravenholm was much cooler than any of Doom 3, I did not find it scary, just insanely cool. The "thump-thump-thump" of those speedy gonzalos zombies was a awesome adreneline booster!
