Wow Ravenholm scarier than doom 3!

i agree,,, the great bit is... once u cleard an area it usually stayed clear... unlike doom3 which was anoing as more firethingamabobies would just pop up....

one thing i did like in doom was that room full of pulsing veigns... and also the bit where u have to follow the guy witht eh lamp that keeps going out.. ontop of that some of the ways the characters were reacting to the incident was coolish i guess...

hl2 hands down though

I think Ravenholm has a certain fear factor too it that you just don't know what you are up against. Either where these fast flying zombies will come from and you don't know if you can hit them. lol
Not to mention the sights and sounds before hand. It's all together in a package. And I don't know, maybe some people also jumped.

In Doom3 just made you jump from enemies but it got old because that's what most of the game was like. Plus that kind of scare is not frightening as much as a reaction. ;)
Although the sights and sounds were spooky, without any enemies. Too bad some were predictable as well.

I think the 'Alien water creature' was a domestic aligator / crocodile :)

Ravenholm only had shock value until I found out about the poison headcrabs, then it seemed kind of tame.

Blood rocks, System Shock 2 rocks, Ravenholm ūber rocks, Doom 3 not rocks!

I've always loved zombie movies!! Dawn of the dead, Night of the living dead,...

I jumped a few times in Ravenholme and fell off a building while fighting those damn fast zomies. But the freakiest moment was when I blasted a headcrab clean off a zombie and the body fell to its knees and the face of a human in mid scream was revealed, I just stood there for a moment and thought "poor bastard" and imagined what it would be like to have a headcrab attached to you. Are you still aware of what's going on but have no control. For that one moment it was more than just a game.

Of course I quickly collected myself and continued on blasting and burning zombies!

Yeah - though it is the same face on every single one of them.. but it did look good at first.

Better still was when you set fire to them and their cries - almost discernable as agony and actual words (something like "pleas let me die die, the pain, ah my eyes - the fire" ) are a great addition and really make you feel kinda sympathetic to the poor guys. It is also a bit freaky - my "other half" freaked out when I showed her that bit and had a suitably disturbed look on her face.. which means it's done it's job lol.

I've just started the game again on 'Hard' level, and because I am taking more damage I am spending more time seeking out health / supply crates etc. So I have to venture into areas of the maps that I didn't on 'normal' difficulty. The are a few hidden zombies I can tell you- mainly in the water. Twice on the Water Hazard levels did I jump because of a zombie emerging from underwater hidden by a supply crate. It gave a lot more shock-value than Doom 3 for some reason, even though sometimes I was half expecting it.

Also, I think somewhere in the forum someone dechiphered the buring zombie screams as 'God help me!'

I think they have a couple of different samples for on fire zombies. The "god help me" makes sense, but I am also certain I heard a much longer mumbling one.

I had to go to the docs after playing ravenholme, in surround sound. I was waking up in heaps of sweat and couldnt sleep from the horrible sounds of those zombies and headcrabs :(

Doc said it was a psychological disorder.

Raveholme Syndrome :dozey:

lol--i have a similar story, but about DooM3: i got a real bad asthma attack while playing DooM3 at night on time and i had to be rushed to the hospital. lol.

ravenholm was for me one of biggest joys of hl2 :) that and the gravity gun.

I KNOW WE SHOULD SIGN A LETTER STATING MESH SHOULD PLAY REAVENHOLM! ahahah lol sweet stuff lol.

RavenHolm was not scary AT ALL, Doom 3 was, but eventuallly you expected it. Only Morons and Idiots say Ravenholm was scary.

''dookie booty, dookie booty, dook dook dookie booty, dookie booty, dookie, booty, dookie booty dookie booty!''

if that's what yer name was referring to hehe :p

Doom 3 was scary the first time you had a zombie jump out in front of you. The remaining 200 times it was just annoying. Ravenholm had an atmosphere that wasn't really scary, but much more realistic and lifelike. Ravenholm looked and felt like a real zombie-infested small town, whereas the entire Doom 3 space station was a fairly uninteresting place to be.

I was more scared in Doom 3... I was also more annoyed in Doom 3. The first time you picked up health and a monster spawned behind you was scary... but about the 20th time it happened it annoyed me. I could predict when one of my actions would trigger a spawn.

Ravenholm wasn't as scary- but I liked that one chapter a lot more than the entire game of Doom 3. The flow of the level and unpredicability (for the most part) made it stand apart from Doom 3 in my opinion.

But ultimatly, I wish Doom 3 mixed up the gameplay and surprises more and Ravenholm had been a bit scarier... simply because I am spoiled :D I don't care if HL2 is better than D3 or vice versa... I want as many games to be as fun as possible.. I got more fun out of HL2 sadly....
