There is no one difference there are lots of little ones and if you really like how one works those little differences will drive you crazy. That said as you seem to be new to modeling I would suggest both, it never hurts to know more than one package. Of course realistically you can't learn both at the same time, to that end I would suggest while learning you use XSI mod tool as it is free and does export into HL2.

Okay thanks for all of yoru help, I alrady own 3dsm actually, I use it for abstract renders for graphics design on my websites and such, like the banners. I dont know the program really though just the steps to make a render, I couldnt even tell u what some of the tools do that im using lol, just know what to do from tutorails.

xsi foundation is like 500 bucks
xsi owns animatoin tools of max
xsi poly tools are pretty much the same as max except the workflow is different (and i prefer it in xsi)
i prefer the xsi interface (everything is there, dont have to search through a lot of menus)
xsi advance destroys max in rendering, dynamics, particles and hair.

Okay I have xsi ready to go and everything, so I went to tutrials and i cant find the first one, "Getting Started" So I started with the 2nd one "Basics" Its telling me to use the "Parent" button which I cant find, how do like scroll down on my right main command area there, liek i know theres more down there cause i can see it cut of but how do i move down there.

Okay I figured out if you right click the other header things they minimize, that worked for me, if there is otherways please post em!

Foundation is 500 bucks, but Advanced is upwards of 8,000 dollars. XSI>Max. I personally like using the mod tool better than Max.

www.3dtutorial.com

best site I've found for XSi tutorials, really helping me make the switch from 3DS max. Small cost to download the full vids, but well worth it. I scheduled it like a proper class, watched an hour a night, then have gone on and am doing my own project based on what i learnt. (plus the local technical college does a night course in XSi which im on. :d)

3DSMax is just way better to use. Most 1337-h4x0r-modellers like me :E started with 3DSM and got used to it :D

Anyone know any free video tuturails for super begginers, they help me alot more than these PDFs im using.

Really it's a matter of personal preference. It's pretty well known that XSI is a little tough to learn. Max is a fair bit friendlier to a new modeller but lacks alot of the cool stuff that XSI has. Maya is a pretty nice compromize between the two I think, though these days it's the most expensive of the main 3d apps ($6999 at the lowest I beleive). Like max and xsi, maya has a free version called Maya PLE (gmax is the free max for those who didnt know). It's similar to the mod tool in it's limitations (most noticeably the viewport watermarks).

3dbuzz.com and 3dtotal.com are a couple of great sites to get tutorials at (in video and non-video form).

EDIT: Note on 3dbuzz... some things cost some money or are onl available on attainment of certain 'certifications' via the forums. You need to register a free account on the site to download anything, but they are well worth that little hassle and do a great job of teaching you with a little technical explanation, lots of demonstrations, and some humor to keep it interesting.

look for desty's xsi video tutorial, he completely models a colt 1911 in xsi 4. Its a few pages back in this section, or just search for xsi video tutorial or something like that.

computer5k, xsi has a feature that max dosent, the fx tree, which is basicaly built in composition software. Guess its not true rendering but its there.

Max is the most expensive of the 3, because it only comes in 1 version. Maya complete is 2000 (which is pretty much the equivalent of max) while unlimited is 7000 which is the equivalnet of xsi advance. Maya is a good choice but i feel that since v5 no major but badly needed updates were done. Maya is dying for a new interface, cuz right now u either do things in the shelves or u go searching in the menus. Not to mention the interface isn't nearl y as customizable as xsi (which is praticaly 100% customizable)

I like the modeling tools for XSI very much, but I have to get used to the viewport navigation.

Don't know if it's true, but someone said that XSI is the step up if you started modeling with Lightwave, and Maya is the equivalent of that for people who used 3dsmax. Not to the disadvantage of 3dsmax or Lightwave, but it's probably true that Maya and XSI have more features.

Xsi looks alot more orginized than 3dsm for sure. 3dsm is just a scary looking program lol.

heh,i sarted out with 3dsmax, used it for 2 years, i tried lightwave but i really didnt like it at all, then i learned maya and used it for a bit, not too long though and then i learned xsi which i am currently using.

btw here's the xsi tut i was talking about dudeman

note taht it dosent cover the uber basics of the app however, just a technique on how to do things. U can ask me (and the few other xsi users, flamz and desty) questions on the ui n shit like that if u got any.

Are you using the "S" key or trying to use O, Z, and P ? I find that the S key is a better alternative, and heads off the lens issues. Also it keeps the major functions all on the left hand instead of both left and right hands.

Bottom line guys there is no ultimate system, there is amazing stuff being done with 3D animations systems long left by the wayside by the program's creators.

i dont use 3D programs, i make every thing from paper ! (just kidding ! ! sorry) :D
