ya Portal 2 sucks

It depends if it's translated as child or girl. Either way, the most minute details are taken into consideration when creating a game, especially one by Valve. Phrases like "My little girl" weren't just thrown into the song haphazardly; the writers knew Valve Fans have theories about everyone and everything in their game universe, and they knew those fanatics would dig for suggestive answers anywhere.

So without a doubt the writers intentionally added lyrics that suggest Glados as a maternal figure in order to tease us about the possibility. Does this mean GLados is Chell's step mom? No. Did they intentionally put suggestive lyrics in there anyways? Probably hell yes.

Oh, I suppose you're right. I think I only disregarded that conclusion because the general hinting of it throughout the game made this seem pretty indirect and ambiguous in comparison. It does complement that idea pretty well.

Sounds weird, but that pic describing what happened to Erik and Gabe's reaction moved me. Some of my family have dealt with health issues and it's extremely difficult on finances.

Gabe is so utterly, utterly awesome.

sorry i have a different opinion than you

This has nothing to do with your opinion. It has everything to do with you being a whiner. I really liked Portal 2 - it's one of the best games I've played in many years. But I'm not out to defend it, because I don't need to. Portal 2 can stand on its own merits. But you haven't even played most of the game and your post, rather than being addressed to the game itself, is addressed to the backlash you've received in this thread and to compensate for your own negative opinion. It's purely prejudicial. Stop whining.

Even though I know Valve and their penchant for creating high quality products, I was extremely impressed and surprised with the level of Portal 2's quality. Sure, some parts could have been better IMO (some segments were too quiet etc, level design, middle dragged on a bit too long), but overall I walked away very gratified with the experience. In regards to story-constraints due to financial limitations, as someone above mentioned budget restricitions still apply--part of being an efficient business. Secondly, while I haven't played the co-op I've been told it has it's own story, continuing from single-player, which I'm assuming has a considerable amount of VA in itself. My point is the story quality continues beyond the single-player portion of the game.

But, looking back, I realized how engrossed I was into the story (for the most part), and then the realization struck me that a game hasn't done that for me in several years. I don't game much anymore, but Portal 2 was a gem I won't soon forget.

I havent read this post yet, but all i gotta say is Portal 2 was ****ing awesome..

That is all..

Also, download the Portal 2 (Developer Dairy) Ipad Application if you own an ipad..good stuff

I'm only on chapter four (just unlocked the game last night), and it's already the funniest game I've ever played.

finally playing through this. like it. atmosphere, mood and art direction/design are the strongest points for me so far, i could spend the entire game just wandering around looking up and down in awe at vast chasms of brutalist style architecture and hanging wires, and the inclusion of the chaotic nature elements clashing with the sterile facilities is jaw dropping. the writing is top notch, too - merchant really delivers in this.

just started chapter 3, gonna crack on with it later or tomorrow.

One thing that kind of irks me about the game, *minor spoilers I guess*

The facility feels just a little *too* big to me. I know we're just supposed to accept the size but the immersion kept breaking because I couldn't help thinking "oh come on". I suppose Black Mesa was the same, but I guess it was slightly more realistic in that there were no gaping areas.

Me too, actually. I mean, the abandoned facility was HUGE, and it was supposed to be some sort of mine, but I never knew they built mines that big.

The costs of building the facility must have been astronomical. Not to mention all the "research" the bean counters did.

Of course, it's somewhat explained by the fact that there are nanobots and robots that have continued to build and build over that long period of time. Still, the original facility is too huge to be believable that it was built in the 50s.

Original facility was built in an abandoned salt mine. And yes the facility likely expanded by itself.

Ah, so nanobots programmed by AS scientists built the facility? I guess that makes it a bit more understandable. Still, they'd have to be good at tunneling etc. during the 'fall' I was thinking "I must be about to hit the Earths core!"

It seems like it was totally modular and being moved around as you were traversing it, like when you put a spider on your hand and just when it is about to reach the edge move your other hand in front of it then repeat. Glados control room seems constant, Wheatley had to move the test chamber to him so the fall and the fall with potato Glados was the same distance, still huge but the entire facility is just several cubes in a large central chamber that wasnt quite as big as it seemed probably

First thought when I saw how expansive and modular the facility was: someone at Valve has been reading Blame!

No, that part is actually built inside the mine by human hands; it was condemned? Vitrified? after circa 1980s from what I can gather, and I doubt that they had nanobots working in there before the whole place got completely sealed off.

It's just a frigging huge mine, I suppose.

How necessary are the spoilers tags now? Just thinking that the thread title itself is a warning.

Yeah the mine is understandable, but the newest part of the facility isn't a part of that is it?

I love Portal and Portal 2.

My only problem with the game is how it's so easy to miss out on jokes if you fail to hear a word because of some external noise. Then again, captioning helps a lot too.

I always slow my game down just in case the dialogue skips or changes when you reach a particular area or location. In the final moments of the game, I was literally wasting as much time as I could just to hear what the characters had to say.

I'm currently playing Portal 2 with captioning on, and very thankful for having the option.

Yeah, but sometimes those paragraphs can be really annoying, with the exception of commentary where it's nice.

Portal 2 DLC is just stuff like new skins and cosmetic accessories for your co-op player models and shit. Its not like they took half of the campaign and locked it and forced you to spend an extra $30 on top of the game price to play it.

I took about 6 hours on the singleplayer and 6 hours on the coop, and I believe those are fairly average scores (depending on how much you pause to listen to dialogue and how often you get stuck I'd say the game would take most people 5-7 hours, same with coop).

For a game that is as phenomenal and well-made as Portal 2, 12 hours of flawless campaigns is more than enough IMO. There is not a single moment of the game that isn't spectacular and even genius.

There's no EP3/Half-Life connection really other than the Borealis drydock which is more of an easter egg than anything else.

Jesus, where are they getting these prices from, 30$ dlc? Who buys this skin and gesture shit for five bucks? Come on cop to it

Amen.

Seriously, releasing games these days without captioning/subtitles is pretty f*cking bad in my opinion.

Anyone who completed the singleplayer in 4 hours clearly just did it as fast as they could, not taking any time to explore and soak in the game. I took about 7 on my first run through.

According to steam I finished it in 6 hours. Pretty standerd I think, for a singelplayer game. And then there's multiplayer. So that's cool.

Apparently Steam is a bit iffy in it's time recording if you marathon through it. Thus all the daft reports of people completing the game is 4 hours.

I'm personally going to take a shit on the GameShark critic's doorstep for posting that review of Portal 2 and giving it a 83, what they said in the review was nowhere near enough to give it less than 90. Thanks to this single review Portal 2's metacritic rating dropped from 96 to 95.

I'm still calling it a 96.

Great news, I'm glad. I'm worried the amount of new chambers is going to be underwhelming though.

played through about 30 minutes of co-op with a friend today, great fun. many laughs were had at entrusting each other with dangerous switches and lasers, and i cannot wait for more.

6 hours is definitely not standard for a single-player story-based 'action' game, in my opinion.

More like 9.

Well it is pretty much standard. Not many new games takes much more then that. I have finished a lot of games on day one.

I finished Metro 2033 on day one, but I played 9 hours straight.:p

I am fairly confident that 6 hours is not standard.

Yeah, the standard is closer to 9-12 hours these days. Then again, there aren't many puzzle shooters to compare against Portal 2...

Nobody should be regarding a 6 hour single player game as standard or value for money. As much as I loved Portal 2 (which took me 7 hours to finish) it was pretty short for the single player gamer, though I imagine the free DLC will make up for any short comings in the games SP length.

6 hours is more like the new standard rather than a reasonable standard -_-

Most games that tend to focus on the MP side have shorter campaigns. In the case of portal 2 however i also think it depends on the individual for example it took me 8 hours to finish the portal 2 campaign.

took me 7.9 hours, that's going through at a pretty good pace but getting stuck a few times.
