The source code is real, and it does compile. You have to have at least SP4+ and the processor pack though. If not, you'll get compiler errors.

Maybe it's not obvious to you but if the leak is confirmed to be real, valve is in big trouble... even if this leaked source code is over a year old and does not contain any maps, sound files, models, textures or music (as it seems it doesn't contain those).
The problem is not that somebody could combile the whole source (would be a very time consuming process to get the combiler set up correctly) but now people have an insight on how the the source engine including the network code works. People will start writing exploits, aimbots, hacks, whatever even before anyone sees the finished game.
Online MP will be infested by cheaters and the situation will be even worse than it is currently with CS.

If real then they could be in even more big trouble... The code clearly contains old HL1 code (which makes me suspicious of its real-ness I might add) which I doubt they have licensed from ID ("we made it from scratch" etc.)

I can confirm that this is source code property of valve software and that it contains data concerning HL1, HL2, CS, TF1, TF2, Steam and several other components.
Allthough I still cannot say for sure how much actual source code of HL2 is contained (considering also the fact that this file only contains part of the source code as indicated by the filename) this is not good sign for valve.

I am not a programmer, and I looked at the folder too, its 160 MB and 7670 files.

This is pathetic. Firstly you believe all this BS, which I will laugh at you for when you all realise it's not the HL2 source. Secodnly, you all believe that valves proprietery, secret source was released and all you're concerned about is aimbots? What about valves right to protect its intellectual property. if this were real (which it isnt) i would be far more concerned about people stealing valves excellent ideas and outstanding coding. But i suppose those with closed minds have better things to think about.

Oh, and btw - it's not exactly difficul to get a bunch of random files from various released codes, rename a few files, chuck in some familiar buzz words, and wah-lah you have a nice lil hoax that a whole bunch of ppl are gonna believe.

I converted all files related to the build_common process to VS2003 (since I dont have VS6) and am compiling them atm. Seems to work OK. As I write this, the batch file is creating 1408 shaders with a tool it compiled just before this step.

I just went through the code at a mates house (for real.. I didn't download it or anything) and it's real alright. Though I'm not sure how old or complete it is. There were references to normal maps in the materialsystem folder and loads of stuff that obviously had no place in HL or Qx source code. Also, perhaps most convincing, what looks like complete audio processing routines for voice analyzing. Valve aren't going to be pleased.. there's loads of stuff developers could steal from this shit.

As I said, one still has confirm how much of this code is actually HL2 code. This is no secret source code nor is it the latest build of HL2 but that doesn't matter since this won't leak will worry valve for sure.
If this package really contains part of the HL2 netcode, than yes, HL2 will be unplayable online.
Anyway, you're completely right about the intellectual property but it's valve business to protect its intellectual property, not ours. And yes, many will incorporate parts of this source code in other projects. Too bad... for valve
BTW, why was valve that anxious about quickly deleting threads about the source code from the steam forums? If it is completely fake, why bother?

if it is legit, it's almost definately just a leaked SDK, as i said way back hours ago. If it is, oh well, no harm done.
What im getting most frustrated at is people jumping to rediculous conclusions like the game wont come out till next year, it will be suspened, heads will roll, the world will halt, we'll all die etc.
