I got some bozo dude trying to tell me that Killzones is better than HL2.

Pleassseeee...Killzones will be forgoten while Half-life 2 becomes a legend....

Dynamic textures? Explain that please.

The closest thing to "dynamic textures" that Half-Life 2 features is decal marking.

ive never heard of dynamic textures or killzones..

it has something more complex than dynamic textures, have a look at the HL2 tech demo video (the one with the camera). in the background the screens all show what the camera is pointing at. It has a complex in and out system which can be adapted to textures.

Dynamic textures meaning animated textures? HL2 is sure to have it as every other games does... If it is that he is referring too.

Never heard of a game called Killzones... Once again if its a game he's referring to :p

Those aren't dynamic textures. Those are viewports, though the image is 3D rendered to 2D.

I don't know what you mean with dynamic textures but HL2 use .VTF for spray decals which supports animation and a lot of other stuff. So the normal textures probably support that too.

And dynamic texture is...?

Like, it can change depending on what happens? Like in Adam's video where he shoots ducks?

IIRC a dynamic texture is not a plain solid texture but an animation. Think about a screensaver on a computer screen (which we already saw in HL) or a digital clock.

Lesson - this is called a 'render to texture' effect. You grab the screen from a framebuffer and make it into a texture, mapping it onto a polygon and updating it every frame.

So yes - as the texture is created every frame, dynamically loaded to Vram and mapped to a polygon, it is a dynamic texture. You could also create the data from a dynamic texture other ways (like streaming a movie of a hard drive, or using an algorythm to generate a map).

Lesson over.

Killzone is some game for the p2s.
Some dude over in the XSI forums, is saying that killzone for the PS2
looks better than Half-life 2. I told him to go download the DW9 vids, and then he aid it looked to basic, then I told him to go dl the other ones traptown, ect, ect.

He said that Kilzones has dynamic textures or some s@!#, then I told him that I am still playing the Orignal Half-life and loving it!!

I told him that killzones will be long forgotten, while Half-life 2 lives in to become and is allready a Legend.

Then I told him about Product Loyalty :)

I just noticed that this is a PS game. Why are we even discussing this on this board?

ps2 game? that peice of shit producing anything NEAR the quality of halflife 2?

*pyscho alert*

Cuz someone is saying in the XSI base forums that its looks better than Half-life 2. I am standing up for Half-life 2.

thats why...

It looks pretty impressive...for a PS2 game...which isn't saying all that much...I mean, look at the sun rays in one of those screen shots and then compare it to the HDR tech in the latest movie and it's definitely not comparable!

Although, some of the character shots look pretty nice...we'll see when we've got some actual movement info for that game...

* TrantJD notices he doesn't have a PS2 and decides to stop caring...

And what about the water...the way it looks in that PS game is almost exactly the same as in the original HL...

The game looks fantastic. It has unbelievable graphics, great lighting, and a ton of other huge graphics features. There are some things that it will do better than HL2, others it will not. Don't be little geeky PC fanboys (and worse a specific PC game fanboy) and completely denounce anything else in the same genre on any other platform. The majority of PS2 games look a LOT better and are of a lot higher quality than the majority of PC games. PC's are only just now getting games that couldn't be done better on the PS2.

The PC is my favorite platform, but PS2 is also very good. There's nothing wrong with this game. I dunno if it looks better than HL2 or not, but it looks very good - a worth contender at least in grapihcs (I know nothing aout the gameplay).

LOL, Ps2 look a lot better and are of much higher quality then pc games. Two questions;

1.What drugs are you taking?

2.May i have some?

The game looks amazing for a ps2 game (for anything). It seems like technologically it's not that impressive but the design is great- each screenshot I look at looks like a high quality drawing out of a comic book; the environments look detailed and well coloured, the characters look cool, the weapons look good, not to mention the motion blur is sweet. On top of that it looks fun too.
I don't think it will be better than HL2 because HL2 has equally great art/game design as well as a lot more to offer in areas like story delivery, character interaction, modding, multiplay etc. I'd say that just the time spent on HL2 alone gives it a huge advantage over most games but Killzone definitely deserves to be watched.

Don't have any more off the top of my head but a lot of those were out in like 2002/2001 and still look better then most of the other stuff on the market. You almost never get really BAD looking PS2 games (made by a decent company), but they're abundant on the PC. My point is that the PC is just now catching up with the consoles (in terms of software, the hardwares been here for awhile). If you're too "fanboyish" to admit it, then that's fine, I don't give a damn.

And I direct you to Silent Hill 3. IMO this is the most graphically advanced and good looking game currently on the market, next to GT3. You tell me one PC game besides possibly HL2 and D3 (which arent out yet) that look better.

I realize that PC's are more powerful than consoles. But who really cares when until now companies have been releasing games to run on 500MHz machines?

I knew I would take some heat for this, but that's ok.

The only reason I posted this is because the other individual brought it up.

In life sometimes you need to make a stand. Otherwise you'll fall for anything.

Fans are what make up the game industry. It keeps people playing game along time after they are released.

Fans start Forums and talk about things like solving problems, helping each other out or in this case state your opinion on things.

Fans Power the economy that we live in, if you open your mind and see a global view. So being a Fan is a really good thing, not something to be ashamed of.

I feel sad IF you cannot relate to standing up for something.

I think it builds character under fire. Criticism can actually make a person stronger in life, and in the end, I think it leaves you with no regrets.

As far as name calling, we as humans usually throw the first stone that we are the ones that are most apt to posses that particular attribute that we are criticizing another one for.

I am not denouncing all the other platforms; I am simply saying that there are people that are still playing the Half-life that was released 5 years ago. The MOD community is a very strong force.

Made up entirely of FANS of SPECIFIC game that they make MODS for.
If we where all to follow your advice, then there would be NO MOD COMMUNITY.

So in essence, your suggestion would be to destruct rather than construct.

I would prefer to continue on unifying and growing as a cooperative FAN based entity, rather than a self-seeking, selfish, doomed growth of malignant virus, eating away at the very soul of our nation.

This is a principal that does not require agreeing or believing in. Just like gravity. It doesn’t need you, you need it.

MGS3 isn't out yet, neither is killzones. PS2 is shit in my opinion, although MGS2's graphics were good, the story was shit and the gameplay was too similar to the original.

I own a PS2, i just havn't played it for ages, there are no good strategy games out for it, FPS are better on PC, and so are all the other genre's apart from beat-em-ups. These are the only games that the PS2 does better.

Sure the graphics may be smooth for most games on PS2, but they are dull and limited, there are not many effects that i know of. If you have the hardware to run it, most big name PC games look far better then what the PS2 is capable of.

Xbox if far more of a contender graphically.

don't forget GTA3 and Vice city, both of which look infinitely better on PC than PS2

The PS2 has the most games for it, but the worst graphics, and the opposite is true for the xbox... Game Cube is just in the middle IMO and PC will (again, imo) always be better than a console, because the second you get the console into your house, it's become obsolete, the 3d card in it isn't as powerful anymore, etc. PCs are alot more upgradable than consoles... and back onto the topic; killzone looks too blurry, and it will never beat HL2 because it has already lost, try this, take a walk down to your local mall or shopping center, hang out around the game store and ask everyone who enters which game they thing is better, Half Life 2 or Killzone, I guarantee that at least 80% of them will say "WTF is killzone" because it's not well known... that is all.

I think some games look good on consoles because on the TV screen they seem to be given an anti-aliased effect automatically. The TV also gives it a little blur effect and the colour is a little different (I can't explain how but it's more realistic). All this seems to make a game look better. I sometimes like to hook the TV up to the computer to play. I guess it works the same way that most of us feel the shaky cam HL2 video looked better than the bink version.

I'm a fan of Half-Life, Perfect Dark, No One Lives Forever, AvP2, might like D3, and possibly Killzone. You see, I am a fan, but I don't blind myself to other possibilities. HL2 may or may not be the best thing out for a long time, but that doesn't mean that there will not be other good games worth playing. I don't see your point, being blind to everything else isn't being a fan, its being ignorant.

Elder Scroolls III: Morrowind - Not a prayer
Warcraft III - Are you high? This doesn't even look very good.
Unreal II - Very good looking game, but not up to SH3 IMO
Unreal Tournament 2003 - not as good as Unreal II's, so read above
the upcoming UT2K4 - still doesn't look as good
Splinter Cell - on the PS2 buddy, looks almost as good
Rainbow Six 3: Ravenshield - isnt an incredible looking game, many PS2 things beat it
EVE Online - No idea what this is
Neverwinter Nights - Also doesnt look as good as many PS2 games
Medal of Honor - A lot of PS2 games look better than this
Homeworld - Not a chance in hell dude
Homeworld 2 - probably couldnt be done on PS2 because of intense amount of polygons, but with a better LOD system could be
Tron 2.0 - No way man, this games only graphical appeal are the interesting design, could easily be done on the PS2

I mean seriously, the majority of these games aren't even near the caliber of the games I mentioned. You aren't even putting up a good argument for the PC, a lot of games look better than the ones you mentioned.

I can't wait till Viewtiful joe comes out, hopefully I'll have enough money after all of these HL2 shenanigans.

Really people who don't like console games are blind. Games like Viewtiful Joe, Zone of the Enders 2, Legend of Zelda, these games are fantastic and they'll never come to PC. And they have better graphical style than any of the ones you mentioned.
