while looking at the last introducing-the-flashlight screenshot, something occured to me: you can actually see Gordon's hand holding that spores thing. you may ask "what's the big deal" but thinking of it more, isn't it ruining the whole concept of identifying yourself with the main character? i mean you don't hear your voice, see your nose/legs/shadow/reflection/hands while holding small objects (as reported recently) but still you can see "your" hands while holding certain weapons. i think it kinda falls out from the whole concept but maybe i just spent too much time on the sun.

You can see your hands while holding other weapons. What's the big deal when comparing it to the bugbait pheromones?

You could see your hands in HL1 so I don't see it as such a big deal.

Plus you are wearing an HEV suit inside the game, the idea is to make you feel like you are Gordon, in which case it is only natural that you get to see his arms when he is holding stuff in front of him. Plus I suspect everyones arms would look basically the same if you were wearing and HEV suit.

there's no connection. just stroke me while looking at this particular picture as the hand stands out more on pictures with those pheromones things.

You are not able to see yourself from 3rd person view, I think that's the thing some of us are intrested in some perverted way, uhm..

having hands holding weapons is a classic, its always been done. :) but I cant see the problem really, its just valve's way , its always been an odd topic, but trust them, I cant see it detracting anything from the gameplay, which is the most important, and valve seem to know that ;), so theres no point blabbing about it really.

/me kicks Six Three, steals his wallet and uses his money to buy a second copy of HL2.

That will teach you to nitpick! :D

those things are kinda interesting nevertheless. when i saw F.E.A.R movies, the most suprising moment for me was seeing character's feet and high-kick option later on. just that thing instantly moved this game into "revolutionary" department for me (as somebody mentioned that "seeing your hands" is classic and i agree on that), so that gave a whole lotta new perspective on things. but what helps to identify yourself with the main character more--just no visual/audio info at all (like hl2) or the ability to see your hands/feet and hear yourself speaking or something--that's another topic.

And wtf is all this I keep hearing about HL2 having weapons? Like wtf no one will buy a game that shows the main character's hands AND weapons..

Yes, you do spend too much time on the sun. How often do you find yourself staring at your hands thinking "is this really me? Whose hand are these?"
Or maybe you think that looking at a plastic box with one glass sidewall and holding a weird shaped plastic thingy instead of the real gun will be less damaging to your immersion level than seeing the virtual hands of a character you are trying to associate with?

[SARCASM]LIKE OMG Six Three WE ONLY WANT THE HANDS SCREW weponz!! lol I r da roxor![/SARCASM]

I hope a few HL2 mods will implement those features.

Thats the real beauty of HL2, if there are a few features (or lack of) that people don't like then the modding community can just put them in (within reason of course) themselves.

Hehe. PWN3D J0°!!!

If you could not see you hands, then how would your weapon sit in front of you? Would the weapon just float there in front of you? In mid air? If you ask me, that breaks the realizim right there.

Or it can be like Ghost Recon and you cannot see your weapon at all. :hmph:

The only reason Gordon doesn't talk is that Valve is too cheap to pay for another voice actor.

You should add a smiley to the end of your post, otherwise people will take you seriously and flame you till you never return here lol!

I'm not going anywhere. If they don't get jokes, then it is their problem. :)

What kind of a topic is this? Reminds me of those retarded questions that the retard asked Gabe. :)

Might be that several hundred thousand gamers would've cringed if they heard a whiny overactor mutter some awful one liners. Although if it was really that off-putting, it wouldn't have sold that well either.

Besides, for it be to "my" hands on the screen, they'd have to be so weedy you could hear the arm bouncing off the HEV's interior plating, and they'd drop a recoiling weapon nine times out of ten as well as failing to reload a gun completely. Needs to be some level of fantasy roleplaying, I guess...

I actually ejoyed playing as Max Payne.. and he had some good one-liners... and so did Duke Nukem (3d). :)

FEAR shows everything about your character. Arms, legs, reflections, shadows, etc. You can even hear him talk. Basically, they're forcing you into believing you are another character. And they appear to have done a damn good job.

Valve does the opposite, by removing everything that could possibly detract from the immersion, like hearing Gordon's voice and seeing his body. They let you create your own character that way.

There's only one aspect where valve deviates from this strategy: the hands holding the guns, which they probably kept for traditional reasons (and because they would look dumb floating).

So, they're equal-but-opposite forms of immersion.

Edit @ Edcrab: The HEV works as kind-of an exoskeleton to augment strength. That's why you can now apparently use the 'AUX POWER' to run faster.

Ah, well Max is a film noir badass and Duke was a deliberately tongue-in-cheek macho hero. I just picture amateurish voiceovers whenever I try to think of ol' Gordo having a working tongue... but Bruno Tavares (or whatever) wasn't too bad (considering the alternatives) in Azure Sheep and Todesangst 2 or whichever mod(s) he appeared in.

i agree it's normal to see the hands holding weapons, throwing grenades etc.
but STILL (and this has been talked about many times), from that point of view, it is rather strange that no arms/hands are shown when driving the vehicles (buggy, hovercraft).
don't you think? :p

:x I AM SOOO AFRIAD

Somone... help...

The reason you can't see Gordon's hands while he is driving is because he can drive with no hands and he has to control the Gauss cannon. Gorond is just that good... I know I just spelled Gordon wrong but it's funny...

You can always hold your own hands up to the screen and pretend like you're driving... that's cool, right?

Two hands on monitor... one hand on mouse, one hand on the keyboard, one hand in my pocket.... Yeah that should work fine Letters.

It's for the same reason I said up a few posts back. If Valve added hands to the steering wheel, it would detract from thier minimalist immersion strategy.
Also, if they have hands on the wheel, why stop there? Hands pushing buttons, spinning dials, pushing boxes, etc.
They'd need animations for everything!
They had to draw the line somewhere, and gun-holding was it.

YEAH PLUS I LIKE MY TWO HANDS ON THE MONITOR while I use my other thre.... two to play the game. I mean how do I drive with two digitized hands on the steering wheel when my hands are on the monitor it would kill the imersion.

newbs... I have my keyboard and mouse attached to the sides of my moniter. Now I can use the other three hands for other things........................

Didn't you guys hear him say in the E3 2004 gamespy video at 16:09 "Look alyx, no hands!" while driving the buggy?

btw check doom3 screenshots--you don't see your hands while holding assault rifle and it doesn't look strange

i don't believe it is the question of if you can see your hands in certain situations ..
because if there are or if there aren't the novelty would only last a few hours however, the question whats the code to the secret 3rd person view in the new half life. ?
