is anyone else on these forums becoming a brew connoisseur like myself? i used to never touch the stuff because i assumed it was all like the wretched crap in hte supermarket. but lately i've developed an interest in both the craft and the product after tasting several real beers.

obviously, diffferent beers are better at different times of the year and whatnot, but if i could only have 1 beer for the rest of my life, i think i would have to pick chimay grande réserve (blue label). it pains me, because i have an affinity for the unibroue brewery, as fin du monde started my interest in real beer. but after having a mediocre batch of trois pistoles, i'm going with chimay.

yeah, they're all belgian style beers. german is good too, but so far i've tried more belgian beers and generally liked them more. also, i don't know anything about czech beers :( but i here they're some of the best in the world.. one of these days..

Moosehead

Nothing beats Canadian Beer... with the exception of Guinness.
which moosehead? the normal lager? i don't trust (or generally like) beers that come in a green bottle . and while the beers are a belgian style, unibroue is a canadian brewery, so i'd agree that the country is responsible for some seriously awesome beers :)

yes, hoegaarden is a good white ale (one of the best actually), but personally i prefer beers with a substantially higher %ABV ;)

I'd rather drink pee, I think pee taste a bit better than beer.

Is it me, or does every post you make get more and more eccentric?

ontopic the czech version of budwiser is good, much better than that American filth, although you can buy it in super markets so it might not be up to your standards.

Personally I like spirits

i normally just stick to good old Carling or Fosters: staple beers for students.

my mates dad owns a brewery and they import all sorts of posh beers. below are a couple of my faves

EDIT: stupid linking.

Rodenbach Grand Cru
ABV 6.5% • Vol 330 ml • bottle • Belgium • Expensive • Flavour 7

This is an aged Belgian red ale, which is 'ripened quietly in oak barrels for two years', according to the label. It has an extremely pungent aroma of rich grapey fruit, with acidic notes, very much like a slightly sour red wine or possibly a gueuze. (Apparently their original advertising slogan was 'It's wine!') In the mouth it is slightly sweet, extremely acidic and fruity, with grapes and even cherries discernible, and very lively. Despite the sweetness it is not at all cloying, even thin, with little or no trace of malt. Finish is sharp and fruity. This is a very polarising beer; like it or loathe it ... and don't even think about drinking more than one at a sitting - it is far too sour and strong. In all, a complex, highly unusual beer, which should be savoured.

tastes really odd to be a beer, but go a month without having one and you'll start having withdrawal symptoms

a smooth beer! that tastes good! it's a bit pricey for a normal piss up, but for for a night in playing cards it's great.

i've made the trip to calais in order to buy cheap booze many times, but i always end up coming back with the same old stuff. reminding myself of these two beers has spurred me on to try something new. *makes a note of all the beers mentioned in the thread*

It's a tasty beer, and the glasses are cool, I like the Hoegaarden Grand Cru
which is a fairly hefty ABV: 8.7%. Leffe runs a close second.

A useful beerophiles website

Edit: Cobra isn't a bad beer either

eccentric? i dunno.. maybe. anyway, i don't think they can sell budvar in the states, because of american budweiser :( i've heard that anyway. it's probably not true though (doesn't make sense to me). however i've certainly never seen it for sale here, but i've not looked hard.

btw, not all beers to be bought in supermarkets are bad, it was a figure of speech.. i was referring to the "american crap" like budweiser.

spirits are good too

Eumundi Lager. Which you can only get in a few towns in Western Australia. Oh yeah, and Guinness.

everything else i've tried (except pee.. not that i can recall anyway..)

lol.. seriously.. :)

it's all about personally taste though.. not that stella or foster's drinkers should be considered 'persons' ;)

<Worships Mr.Chimp> The original budweiser (Budvar) is SO good - most Czech beers are: Staroprommen, Pilsner Urquell.
Mexican beer is also good: Sol, Corona :)
Belgian beers are quite good in terms of ridiculous strength, think just below wine 8-11%, and are quite tasty. Beck's is very good also.
Stella! Na na na! (take that Mr.Chimp)
English and American lager's rubbish though. And Foster's is weak.
Cider = stomach-rottingly good.
Ohscrewit: I'll have a double G&T, a bottle of red wine (to share between 2, mind), a pint of Strongbow, one of Stella, a bottle of Beck's, a Springbok, an orange Reef to strawpeedo aaaaaannnnnd... Another double G&T please <falls over>

all this makes me want to go watch Withnail & I. i tried drinking along with them but i passed out before the film finished...

coors!..jk i like yueling lager a lot (spelled correctly) when i drink, which is not very often. maybe once every 2 months

thx for the advice (i guess a beer from bangalore would be good with curries), oh and thx for that site earlier too. beeradvocate.com is a good review site, you learn to trust certian reviewers. next time i get down to the local pub, i'll see what they have and give you all a report :)

oh and el chi:
"Mexican beer is also good"
that little comment just got you disqualified from being taken seriously in this thread ;)

re...

i never really used to drink beer....recently though i have begun to, i like cider as well though.

fav beers :
Zipfer (austrin beer, nice)
Tiger Beer (very nice beer from singapore)
Stella Artois
Warsteiner (german)
and if i'm in a bar that's not really got any of those i don't mind carlsberg or heineken

that's bout it really, not really a big fan of american beers

and a cider that is hella nice is one called Magners, though it's probably hard
to find outside Northern Ireland where i'm from, and it's called Bulmers in the south of Ireland for some reason.

Aw refereee!
Pfft, I don't care - it IS great. Much better than American water-piss-"beer" <Sulks in a corner>

Oh yeah - Cobra and Tiger also good like what Kadayi said :)

All ive ever drank, beer wise, is Busch and Pabst Blue Ribbon
They are ok, all i do is chug-a-lug though

Guinness is my favourite, followed by Tetley's or Bombardier.

I hear the Guinness is far superior in Ireland though, I may have to go on a fact finding mission to confirm this ;)

where are you from? guiness on tap in ireland is indeed very different from (i.e. better than) the guiness bottled in canada. or it used to be 5 years ago, anyway.

*adds bombardier to list*

out of the cheep beer id have to say molson canadain is on the top. alexander keiths is good, along with guinesse. but the best beer ive ever had was a home brew from a german friend of mine

i don't care what all you people think, i like killians, that's my fav. hehe... i also like grolsch amber ale, guinness, left hand milk stout(micro brew here in CO... we have TONS of micro brews :D), blue moon, fat tire is OKAY(kinda a yuppie beer though..), aaannndd hmm... sapporo and tsing tao are good too.

fishymumma said:
totaly agree :) never had it off the tap :S
i've only had it off the tap twice, but oddly enough i actually like it from the bottle better.. go figure.

jackal, if you like blue moon, try a real white ale like hoegaarden. also, tsing tao?!?! rice beers give me nightmares :x
