You could always jazz it up with deluded stories about how there came to be a French element in your family in the first place. Something like the denied love 'twixt a French knight and an English peasant woman during the - erm - olden days (yeah that works) separated by status and the relentless, hopeless fighting between their two nations. And language, I should imagine.
Either way - they copped off and now youse is a cheese-eating surrender monkey, boy.

as for me, I'm 1/2 newfoundlander(with mostly english and a dab of scottish heritage), and 1/2 lebanese(supposedly saudi arabian heritage 200 years back, before the oil made them rich ).
