I wrote and IGN Review.

http://rr.pc.ign.com/rr/008/008873.html

I'm playing through the game for a 3rd time now. The second time I was just messing around cheating my way through it. Now I'm gonna go through it on Realistic...should be a bitch.

I actually found the game quite hard on Normal. The last Trigen fight was tough as hell for me.

I have had a blast with this game so far.

I think it's an awesome game. I've already played through it over 1.5 times... it's just one of those games you can sit down and have fun with for a just a little while.

I was actually surprised (in a good way) at how long and tough it was...

I love it.
I've beat it but going back at it again on realistic.
Runs awesome on my system. The first time I played through I ran it at 1024x768 Very High Details No AA/AF on my Athlon 2800+ @ 2.2ghz/ 1gb PC2700/ Radeon 9800Pro.
I should get FRAPS and see my FPS because it was smooth.

I think that is about the most accurate review I have read on Far Cry. GJ
It matches my opinion well anyway.

I tried it at 1280x1024 and it ran well also.
I'm playing at 1024x768 with AA on medium and AF on 2 now.

I'm realling trying to not take the jeeps/boats as much and explore more. My first time through took me 13-16 hours (even though it felt like 20 at least) and Im gonna take my time more this time.

Love the game.

It is just not my kind of game.

The gfx dont seem as great as people say they are.
The AI is dumb.
The story is nothing special.
The gamplay is nothing special.

Its not really a horrible game ....but its not 1/10 as good as some people think.

Ok, sure, people hate when they tell them to state "why," but crabcakes... dude, say why if you're going to critique it like that :D. It just makes everyone soooo much happier ^__^ lol.

BTW - I'm installing it right now, w00t.

I did say why.... Just with short and to the point explanations.

Its not like i said "I think it sucks" and that was it.

Only thing I dislike about FarCry is the clunkyness of your characters movement. Rest of it is top bombing, if a little cliche' with the mutants.

Gameplay's great fun
AI is very good (still think AI in Half-life is better, maybe its cause the marines move faster then the merc's)
Story rips of that Dr Moreua's Island movie or whatever its called
and the graphics are the best i've seen in a computer game to date (a computer thats available i mean, HL2/Doom 3's graphics own it)
Single-player is great, Multi-player isn't that good

OMFG!!! i cannot stop playing that game! it's amazing! BUY IT NOWz0r!@!!!!211!!

:: kills another trigen ::

SPOILERZ!!! (highlight)
I'm at the part where the Dr. drops u off after the nuke goes off

and its so much fun! especially cry vision!

:| I don't really enjoy this game, it's OKAY. But, hey it's something to pass the time as I wait til Half Life 2 and Doom III and STALKER comes out. Quickie Question: I am on the level "Pier", am I close to the end of the game? And how many levels are there?

The two demos frankly didn't impress me that much. I expected much more interactivity given a new engine in need of showing off. The graphics were good, but to be expected.
I don't know, it just didn't "sparkle".
The only favorite part of mine was the end of the first demo, (*spoiler*after planting the explosives on the pump *end*) I look back and was like !@#$%!

Yeah i felt that way after i played the first 2 demo's as well, the full game however is alot different

i don't have the game.. i enjoyed the demo but with other games coming out.. this is one game i have decided to pass on simply because i only have so much money to spend on games and such.

its a shame tho cause the game itself looks nice.. hmm... maybe i'll borrow the game from a friend.. :|

Far Cry is the best game I've played in a long time. The boat and buggy chases were particularily awesome. If HL2 and Doom3 wouldn't appear later this year, this would have been my choice for game of the year.

Its my best game so far, I think this will remain playable till the release of stalker and HL2

a great game, probably the best fps up to this date, though some of the monsters are really stupid.

i like this game too. full of surprises. but i decided to be dumb and play it on the hardest setting from the off...not advisable. the mercs are just a bitch to dispatch, not to mention the trigens.

i have my doubts over MP but the singleplayer element is timeless i think. refreshing and well worth the money.

FC is the Best game I have played in a long time. MP is a little bland, but I enjoy the quake like DM.. its nicely paced.
I dont know, I just think anyone with a decent rig should play through the game at least once.

I finished the game in realistic, and Im playing through again in statistics mode.
love it.

I've been hearing about how awesome it is, but I'm gonna have to hold off until I get som more dough. It's gonna be my reward when I install my new graphics card. :D

Far Cry is definately a sweet game :)

While I think most of the levels are excellent some are pretty average. The human Trigens also suck imo (feels like they have strayed from a poor Doom clone and have been trapped in Far Cry) The monkey ones are cool tho \o/

Top game - excels in many areas, but let down in a few others.

Realistic is a biatch, especialy when those adorable elite mercs pop you with a round form their g36 from 50m away (wich just happens to be realistic). Trigens are also a lot of fun, though those fatboys sure can take a beating (tip for realistic, avoid). AI is great, best I've seen in a FPS. Grafics are also top notch, and I personally think they're better than HL2's. Physics engine is great fun, works nicely without clogging the system, and is the most realistic looking I've seen yet.

MP is fun, not to complex or novel. Like almost every game out there, mods should make MP good, like, say, Half-Life.

Something that should be noted is how darned easy it is to create nice, big and detailed maps without much experience.

Oh, and the game supports coop MP, though not out of the box.

IMO, if you like FPS games oriented a bit toward realism (ie: not 'quakey'), you should buy it.

You know, i wasnt gonna get this game for a couple of months but after reading when people have said in this thread (i havent read the review yet) i think i might order it.

Best game since HL. I like it more than HL in many aspects.

Lotta fun, I'm at the end of river but.. grar. Maybe it's realistic? Or maybe it's just repetitive at this point.. but, the gameplay feels stale after all the levels of just gunning down merc after merc, and they all look the same :(

I've had fun until this level, and, what's sad is, river is the best looking level in the game so far

I don’t know, I found this game, while very beautiful, a complete bore. I just can’t stand the idiotic voice acting/plot. Who wrote that damn dialogue? I understand one-liners were cool in Duke Nukem 3d times (plus Duke looked tough), but come on.

The only part I liked is when monsters first appeared, I like scary stuff. Oh and who didn’t see the plot twist coming.. Oh ah.. bleh.

Damn, I am too old for this, shoot them up single-player games are boring now.

The graphics don't match HL2/D3/Stalker but they have elements similar to them and are the best graphics out yet in a game. It's a big step in that direction for current games. It has dynamic lighting and a lot of shaders (FX cards beware).
What is nice is that the brush is thick and you have a lot of cover and can explore. You are not limited at all. The maps are huge. The sounds are awesome. Include birds, monkeys etc. There are fireflies at night and dragon flies along with the birds/fish.
The only setting I've been looking for is to change the LOD.

Meh, I'll get it as a budget title sometime, not risking the chance to buy it full priced because, well... the demo's and the mp beta plain out sucked ass.
I've heard that the full game is better, and it better be otherwise it's total crap in my eyes.
But even if the full game improves stuff on the freedom you have and the AI, there's still the pretty horrible feel and ballistics of the game, which I doubt have changed much since the demo's.
The full game may be a nice good game, but unless the game magically changed since the demo's, it's nothing groundbreaking and rather cliché. Fun maybe, revolutionary, no.
But I won't make a final judgment until I played the full game, a fair thing to do.

Does it have to be revolutionary?
Dont get me wrong, im not exactly disgreeing with what you said but just because something is cliche, or at least called cliche doesnt make it bad. Like you said, its fun but not revolutionary. Well maybe it doesnt have to be, maybe it can be an enjoyable stepping stone between the really great games.

Well, I just finished it. It was a pretty lame ending, but it is asking for a sequel. Not only will the re-palyability keep this game alive, but the modability aswell. Best game I have played since KotOR.

lol, its £24.99 from PC world, or if your in America im sure its cheaper .

its a fantastic price,! and an awsome game, if you dont even remotely enjoy this in the least (crabcakes cheer up) then I quite boldly think that you arnt a true fan of the FPS genre.

but it is asking for a sequel

totally! and this time Val gets naked and becomes the bad guy:) .. right? pls say im right :upstare:

Yeah it was sort of a reply to people who compared it to games like HL.
Sure, no doubt it's fun, so is Serious Sam, it ain't just nothing special.

its engine and Sandbox editor is revolutionary, godamit, because there hasnt been anything like it before and is a fairly 'radical' change on the scale of FPS gaming, maybe not in the experiance so much, but definately in the graphical output and management with modern day graphics cards . :p, maybe a quick look at the old dictionary would help in the word 'revolutionary's' use.

For anyone who has goten to the last level, this "news" post on actiontrip.com i found funny, yet very close to home :|

WARNING: SPOILER ALERT!

Far Cry programmer mulling over something... producer comes over to talk to him...

Hey, what's wrong?

Well, I'm really all out of ideas for huge boss creatures, or any goddamn creatures. And we really need to make this ending as spectacular as possible.

OK, so throw in more bad guys... and monsters. Lots of monsters and bad guys... That surely will be remembered as a spectacular ending.

Yeah, but that's been done already - look at Serious Sam; there's more weird monsters in that game than in any Will & Grace episode.

Yeah, but you can KILL them.

Kill who? The entire cast of Will & Grace?

No, the monsters in Serious Sam. They're not invincible.

Wait, what are you saying?

Bear with me here. If you really want to make a spectacular ending to the game you need to make the monsters goddamn invincible; they need to be deadly accurate, have the ability to leap 50 feet in the air, be invisible and armed to the teeth. And you need to have dozens of them brutally attack Jack all at once with powerful rockets, snipers and their deadly massive hands. Now THAT's an ending!

So wait, instead of actually coming up with some really neat looking bosses or puzzles for the ending, we'll just throw so much goddamn crap at the player that his brain will file the ending under "things that make you go insane if you think about them too much - like the meaning of life".

Yes.

Cool, let's test that idea...

(...)

The producer and lead programmer work at the ending, and after several months, they hand it out to the Q&A team for testing.

(...)

OK, we'll give these guys a couple of weeks to play test the end level and see what they think.

(...)

Some time later... Roger, one of the Q&A guys meets with the lead programmer and the producer.

So how was it? Where's Ken? He was the Q&A team lead, right?

Ken is injured. He is in a hospital right now.

What happened?!

He rammed his head into the monitor. Unfortunately, it was a CRT monitor and he damn nearly decapitated himself. Luckily, we managed to staple his neck to his head and take out a few bigger shards before the paramedics arrived.

But why?!

Well, we're not sure. But we have his notes here. Here, take a look.

Day 1
------
HOW, HOW DO I DO IT?! HOW?!?

Day 2
------
As I load the end level over and over again, I feel as if this game is laughing at me. Mocking my incompetence. Surely, this cannot be the only way... It just isn't possible to do it this way.

Day 3
------
I came home late from work yesterday; I have bags under my eyes and I'm very irritable. In fact, I think I may've incidentally stabbed my wife several times with the kitchen knife last night. She was bleeding, but her bleeding can't help my woes. I need to go back to that game tomorrow. I am afraid it will mock me again.

Day 4
------
I'm looking at the other testers and they all seem so goddamn content. Rage, hate and desperation are boiling in me, and I feel like crying all the time. Must-hold-it-in. Is it possible that I cannot even beat games anymore? My dad always wanted me to be a doctor, but I said, no, I'll be a game tester! Have I failed in that too? I feel so powerless, I think I've become impotent.

Day 5
------
*just some blood stains on the paper*

The incident happened on day five as you can see...

So how did you like the ending, Roger? Was it challenging enough?

Excuse me, I can't hear you well.

WAS THE ENDING SPECTACULAR, ROGER?!

I'm sorry. You see, our senior team member Mark; you remember Mark, he is... was the tall cheerful guy that never complained when he had to get coffee for everyone; he blew his brains out with a .44 Magnum the day before yesterday. Some of his brains are still smeared across my monitor. I still can't hear well from the gun blast. Damn, that shot was cracking! And in a small room like that...

He screamed, YOU HUGE TRIGENT WHORES!!, took the .44 out of a paper bag, and pulled the trigger. But the real problem is that Mark took the game home before that, hoping to put in an extra few hours in the comfort of his home. Unfortunately, his two little boys got a hold of the end level while daddy was at work and after a few days their hair turned white; it's the funniest thing. They just keep banging their little heads against the wall and saying gibberish all the time.

Mark's dog, Bobo, he loves those two boys, man. Seeing them like that got to him and he simply stopped eating. His hair fell off; he had such thick, shiny hair before that; they're feeding him some food intravenously since yesterday. Pedigree Chum my ass! That dog is in terrible condition. It's the first time I've seen a dog try to commit suicide.

Producer writes a note to Roger on a peace of paper. The note says: "How was the ending?"

The ending to what, sir?

To the game. Far Cry! OUR GAME!!

I don't know what Far Cry is, sir. I'm sorry, I'm new here.

You've been with Ubi Soft for 2 years now, Roger. What the hell are you talking about?!

OOOH, the ending!!

Yes...

I can't remember.

My mind has been a total blank since Friday. I do know my name and that I like to smoke, but I don't remember much else.

But you do remember that Mark blew his brains out with a .44 Magnum.

Mark? Who's Mark? Is he a Trigent? And what is a Trigent? Why am I saying this?!

It's OK, Roger. You're just under some stress. Take a vacation, buddy. Kick back for a couple of days, relax.

Oh OK....

Roger opens a window and jumps out. Luckily the office is on the second floor so he "merely" breaks his hip and severely bruises his knees.

(...)

Producer turns to the Lead Designer.

Look, we may've overdone the ending a bit; what do you think?

I don't know. It's pretty damn spectacular in a sense. And besides, I really can't come up with any more creatures; bosses or otherwise. I'm spent, dude. Totally.

Yeah, I hear ya. Let's stick to what we have then. I'll make a note to Ubi Soft to put a disclaimer on the game box in very small print that says: "The ending may possibly make you homicidal and/or insane."

Cool. You can never be too careful.

Ok...the ending wasn't that hard...but funny stuff nonetheless.

It took me 15 tries to get through the section they're talking about I'd say (after that it was a piece of cake). I felt a big sense of accomplishment afterwards though...and I like that.
