Arriving late to touchscreen players, Creative today unveiled the Zii Egg. The device is in its stock form a competitor to the iPod touch with a 3.5-inch 480x320 multi-touch display that supports music, photo and video playback as well as web browsing. Creative however sees the device as a development platform. The built-in Plaszma operating system is Linux-based and therefore open-source, letting companies or end users add software, change features or even replace the OS; the device is ready to use Google's Android almost out of the box.

It also promises certain technical edges over the iPod through a graphics processor that can not only render 42 million pixels per second but output video at 720p or 1080p through HDMI. The general-purpose design gives it not only Bluetooth and Wi-Fi but both an HD-capable outward camera for taking photos and a front VGA camera for self-portraits or video conferencing. A GPS receiver is built-in for location-based apps even when the Zii Egg is beyond Wi-Fi, and Creative's X-Fi audio processing is standard.

Unusually for most of its players, Creative hasn't specified plans to ship the Zii Egg as its own, pre-packaged device. It should cost as little as $199 US, however, and the company is inviting other firms to treat it as a blank slate which could have no built-in storage whatsoever or as much as 32GB of internal memory plus SDHC cards of similar size.

HD Output of 1080p with such a small device? Inbuilt GPS? X-fi and all that stuff. quite awesome. I'd rather get this than the Zune HD

Holy shit, it's pretty much the accessory I've been waiting for... I just hope the device gains enough popularity to attract the attention of the software developers.

Same here, I've been waiting for something like this forever.

Apple won't even attempt to compete with this price and value. And this thing is open source all the way around. From hardware to OS. No proprietary anything. You want cheap parts, upgrades and accessories? No problem. Put a different operating system on it if you want. All around, this is a developers dream I would think.
The Zii EGG features a 10-point multi-gesture touch screen that allows developers to offer a customized device with a compelling widget-based user interface. This enables developers to create applications such as a virtual piano where you can actually play chords with onscreen keys. Users can even enjoy customized gesture commands.
You couldn't ask for anything more in a touchscreen, it can register a unique input from all 10 fingers simultaneously.

This ****ing thing is the Swiss army knife of the 21st century. So this is why Creative has been so quiet the last few years.

All is forgiven Creative. <3 Finally, someone to show the fart smellers at Apple a few tricks.

And none of it is proprietary. That means no god damn Apple special cable number #36 for $59.99. Upgrade the ram from any manufacturer you choose. Competition is good, monopolies bad.

$199 is a great deal. I'll be getting one of these just to play with.

I would love for a cellular manufacturer to put a radio in that and sell it. Honestly, this thing looks to be one great, great device.

I saw this awhile back and it's the reason why I have not purchased another music player since I lost my iTouch (RIP Touch :()

I'm getting then mainly because 1. It's not an extremely commercialized company, and 2. They have enough common sense to actually price it good. Oh and also the features... that GPS is better than any GPS in a car I've seen.

Zii. It's three better than Wii!
