A source close to BioWare confirmed to us today that the studio?s upcoming untitled massively-multiplayer online RPG will be centered around the Star Wars universe, specifically that of Knights of the Old Republic, which the developer released in 2003. The game garnered critical acclaim and spawned a less-popular sequel, released by Obsidian two years later.

to be taken with a grain of salt but after being "aquired" by EA, Bioware releasing an MMO based on a popular IP seems only natural ..few developers/publishers could afford the long investment in such a huge IP

Can't be shittier than Star Wars Galaxies.

but they shat over it for a reason? it didnt have enough subscribers?

It might work... but Star Wars as a videogame never seemed right to me, not even in KOTOR I and II. (Jedi Outcast... maybe.)

I don't know why they did it, to my knowledge it was doing fine subscriber wise. OH how I miss those days !

That was one of my most anticipated mmorpgs since before POTBS. They ruined my dreams. I posted on the forums every day during development.

You can't get a better backdrop for an mmo than Star Wars - which shows how much SWG dropped the ball. I hope this rumour proves true.

The thing about Star Wars is that it's just... just too large. Incredibly large. INCREDIBLY INCREDIBLY LARGE. So you have to loop off an area of a planet for each planet to play on... and then out goes the ship to ship combat... or not.

I don't know. It never seemed like it would work, but SWG had an ok model until the gigantic crash that occured, or whatever...

Naw. Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, KOTOR, the plethora of good SW console titles (Starfighter, Jedi Power Battles, etc etc etc). Star Wars is involved in some of my fondest gaming memories (Dark Forces was one of my first FPSes <3)

lolwut. By that reasoning, Warhammer-based games don't work (which they do), World War II games don't work (which they do) and any other game taking place in a smaller, cordoned environment in lieu of encompassing the entire universe's area would not work either.

World of Warcraft works and it has a pretty big universe...

Cool. I've been hoping their MMO would be on the Star Wars license since they announced it. Being in the KotoR timeline only sweetens the deal :D

This is horrible news. Whenever I try to explain to someone why I hate MMO's I use KOTOR as an example what I like VS what I dislike and what often can't be done due to the fact the world doesn't revolve around you in MMO's

I think the point is that SW doesnt have a self contained world like WoW or even ww2 games do ..the very fact that it's spread out through space makes it hard to create a MMO ...I mean how would you get players to hang out in the same areas if the travel time between planets would make it near impossible

Remember... Star Wars Galaxy contains 400 billion stars.

They were working on this before they were bought out by EA.

really? you dont say? boy oh boy do I ever have egg on my face :dozey:

....bioware was bought out 11 days ago ..what company announces a game a week into production?

Did I mention you? There were a couple of posts saying they'd made this because of the buyout, I was just telling the truth.

SWG was shit. I was in the stress test beta and it was shit on release. It was also shit six months after release when my friends convinced me that it was better. It was also shit when I tried a free trial a year later.

This could be ****ing awesome though, I'd be lying if I said that I don't like the sound of this.

ya but you miss my point ..EA bought Bioware eleven days ago ..either way it's not enough time to do anything except sign the dotted line to the aquisition

Die in a fire.

Galaxies was my first MMO and my last MMO. I loved it for about 4 months. I've hated it ever since. I liked KOTOR 1, never played 2. A Star Wars RPG is the ONLY RPG I could ever envision myself ever playing because I truley despise EVERYTHING in the fantasy settings of video games (WOW) and movies (LOTR).

I liked KOTOR because it was an RPG in a setting I liked that didn't involve other people. I hate other people when it comes to video gaming. I definitely won't be checking this one out.

Yeah, sure, good that you tell me, but it so happens I know. I was saying it for the people that don't.

Hopefully Bioware can develop something that compares to world of warcraft...otherwise it will be yet another MMO flop.

Pre-Cu SWG was great.
The game had a booming economy, player cities with great community's and the overall atmosphere of the game was just great. They ruined the game by trying to turn it into a WoW clone and look what happened. They were greedy and wanted more subscribers and got the opposite instead. If Bioware wants to succeed in the mmo market they should stay from Wow's mechanics as far as possible.

I hope they narrow the scope of things a little bit, SWG was a bit too massive and overwhelming to have any kind of mass-market style appeal. And of course they lost all the hardcore fans when they tried to turn it into WoW - so let's hope they get it right from day 1 this time.

I just hope they dont wussify the entire game ..seriously do we need a music playing class? ...more with the pew pew and less with the "and the spice trade with the Nosians is going according to plan Queen Armadillo, our deficit continues to plummet while the peasants continue to eat cake ..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"

Couldn't have said it better myself - they need to focus more on core game-play rather than appealing to the vocal minority of hardcore Star-Wars geeks and MMOG freaks.

So what did they change exactly to make it more like wow.

Why do everyone must do shitty MMO's , every game in the genre is the same.
Can't they do another excellent KOTOR instead ? >.>

THAT'S what made the community though.
What your asking they did for SWG, and now it sucks. They focused on the core game-play and ruined it.

No, please make a sequel to Outcast instead... (sure there is force unleased, but i dont think that has guns) :(

I'm not saying go back to games that already had established player bases and ruining it (which they already did). I'm saying build a game from the ground up that is more massively appealing and generally fun to play for the average PC gaming audience. I'll be the first to admit that the CU was a ridiculous way of shitting all over a community that kept a dying mmorpg alive, I just want to see the new game cater to an entirely different type of audience from the beginning - so they don't have to take drastic measures like that so late in the life-cycle of the game.

Also Raven needs to make Jedi Knight III, k plz thx.

I might try the free trial when it comes out.

They work. They just don't feel right.

I would, but they never seem to have those anymore. Atleast, not until they've already been out for awhile. Probably because they make alot more on box sales this way.

MMO's are much more easy to develop than single player games: no story, no plot, no mistery to unveil. Just set up a scenery and scatter thousands of paying players to let them do what they want.
Easy money!
