I agree, the character animation is amazing, but it could definitely be better too. Motion capture with a high enough sampling rate would give you animation the quality of Gollum.
The demo playback bug was causing problems with the synchronization of animation and sound. There's no way a demo-playback bug could cause the graphics engine to 'forget' to do shadow occulsion.
EDIT: nm, saw your reply
For those stencil shadows it takes a lot of cycles to compute shadow occlusion. Valve is just adding the shadow values together, much cheaper. I would assume it's a limitation of the Source engine, not a bug. You're not likely to see it too often, or even notice, only when an object is...

And Naft, that eurogamer article does not say that CS-Source will not be HL2MP. It says it will be sold seperately. Remember that HL2 Singleplayer-only will be sold as a SKU, why wouldn't the MP-only be also...
That's what everyone on the board is arguing about right now. To me it looks like CS-Source will be including with HL2 as the multiplayer, and it will also be available in retail like CS currently is. No word on if some kind of HL2DM is also going to be included with HL2.
Some of you people are in serious denial. Shacknews and EvilAvatar are both reporting that CS-Source is HL2MP. If it weren't, why would Gabe display it in an HL2 presentation, and say "Some people have been wondering about multiplayer...", and release it at the same time as HL2?
Gabe: "oh...
More ATI booth demo impressions:
- The end of the first GMan sequence is just awesome. "smell the ashes", his face looks so real, and CREEPY. Damn that's well done. And earlier when the camera was right in his eyeball, it's hard to tell with the poor vid quality but it seems extremely...
Sorry, but if you think what they showed in the demo is not the multiplayer that will come with HL2, you're nuts. Having it's own menu/launcher doesn't change that. We already know from eurogamer that HL2 and CS-Source will come out at the same time, I think it's pretty crazy to assume there's...
Uh... re: multiplayer - What makes you guys think CS-Source isn't HL2MP? Quoth Gabe: "One of the big questions is: what about multiplayer? So we decided to combine the most popular online action game with the power of the HL2 engine. And we're gonna show that to you."
Assuming that...
Same gameplay, new engine.
I suppose they had to port CS1 to Source at some point, but it seems like such a letdown after all the secrecy for so long. It's like announcing the re-release of Ms. Pac Man, but with photorealistic ghosts.
I've already played CS hundreds of hours, more than enough...
ATI booth demo impressions:
HL2 video was great, I loved the beginning with the apartments and the combine, very moody. The strider battle was fantastic, and the toolshed demo made me giddy. Very exciting
CS - Source looks amazing. I still think it's rediculous to spend all that time...
Uh... if I wanted to play Counter-Strike again I have it already. CS as the MP for HL2 without any gameplay changes is... lame. I hope shacknews got confused or something.
Wow... bizarre. ??? So CS2 is just CS in Source? What's the point of that? All they could add to it would be higher detail models and textures... I'll reserve judgement until I see more, but it sounds pretty... goofy. I guess they just want to continue development on Counter-Strike but with...
That eurogamer article gives me an idea: Why would Valve have one demo in the Vivendi booth and one in the ATI booth? Possibly because the game they want to demo in the ATI booth is not being published by Vivendi.
