I haven't looked into spawning custom entities, but to run a compiled map:
First compile it [Hit f9 in hammer], follow the prompts, then after it's done compiling [completed in x seconds] etc, go to where you compiled it to, grab the .bsp, and chuck it in your HL2 maps folder.
start up a...
1) Alright, I never considered that it was HL2. Yeah, I do alt tab out when I map. I'll disregard it in the future.. thanks :)
5) I'll muck around with it a bit more, then. There should be some tuts around, I'll have a look.
Thanks :)
Don't know about the second one [about the shadows], but the first one has definitely been done and there are tuts out for it. Just keep looking.. I'm sorry I can't help, but at least I can give you some encouragement. I know some people have made some tuts.
Research triggers more, is all I can say. I'm pretty sure it's possible, and I think right now we're at a stage where nobody is experienced enough in source to provide answers about it, and is still learning themselves.
Hey. I've been mucking around with a test map, just trying all these different things to practice with Hammer, and I've been having several problems, the latest of which I can't seem to solve. At the end of the post I'll link to the files for both the map and compiled map, so you can look at...
1. carve is fine for that purpose.
2. a series of brushes [rectangular prisms stacked up next to eachother] i believe.
3. there are models that you can chuck there. the models by nature will not do anything unless you edit them to say that it should open or something, so just put a door...
I have a few problems in hammer that I can't quite figure out. If you could help, that'd be great.

a) The windows are 0 pixels thick, and i can't figure out how to have breakable [func_breakable_surf] thick 'security glass'-type windows.
b) Using func_breakable_surf I can't figure...
I can't comment on the gameplay of it [what game is it for, anyway?], but it does look pretty and well-made, I'll give you that. Apart from the glass looking weird, there are no 'poles' [can't think of a more appropriate name right now] on the glass staircase. Staircases don't just have long...
Sorry if this has already been addressed and I was unable to decipher whatever source has explained the solution.
I'm going to explain the background a little so you can understand just what I'm asking:
I want to make a singleplayer mod for HL2, based on the HL2 world. This means, same...
Depending on what game this is for [I assume CS:S?], I would make the areas much smaller, especially the long areas.
Can you give us a general layout of it so far, plus your plans for it?
Gah! I'm stuck at school.. somebody post some screenshots, for the love of God!
I tried to install it last night but it didn't work.. Let's hope that it'll work tonight.
Until then.. screenshots, curse you!
I don't know.. the green ball looks too.. ball-y. It's supposed to be an indentation with lights that highlight it, it looks too weird to me. Maybe it looks better when it's shrunk to the proper size.
I'm surprised that LucasArts hasn't stopped anyone from their illegal copyright infringements yet.. I don't doubt that there is no way these mods can succeed, unless you somehow managed to crank out a proper game secretly then spread it around illegally, because the main website would be shut down.
