that's the best argument i've heard for getting a 9800p...but won't the pci-e mobos have agp slots for a while? just like ISA got phased out? i haven't looked at all. if the pci-e boards have no agp, i'll definitely get a 9800p...since this fall i'm gonna have a job and i'll be able to afford...
never fried anything
i have 5 exhaust fans (2 front 2 back 1 by agp slot on the side)
my whole rig (p4 2.4c, 1024mb corsair XMS, abit ic7, cdRW/dvd, case+430W power supply, 19" viewsonic p95f+B)...(video card gf4ti4200 and 40gig HD transferred from old machine) cost around $800-900 last...
doesn't bother me that much anyway...my 2.4c will OC to around 3ghz anyway...that'll last me until the games get a bit heavier and by then i'm sure i'll be getting an a64. the x800 seems like the better choice (especially if it's sub-$375) even if i'm not going to upgrade to an a64 until late...
i'm pressed for time though...i have to leave for this camp in 2 weeks and i have no 3d video card...the only one i have has a broken fan that overheats and freezes with 3d apps.
i'm not going to be buying a whole new mobo/ram/cpu this fall...won't be able to afford it. and you don't think...
yea...problem is i'm gonna have to order a certain # of days before i go...and having to pay for faster than ground shipping would defeat the purpose of trying to get a deal. i guess i just wanted to feel out and see some opinions about the refurb and what ppl think the chance is for a deal :P

this is a repost from the anandtech forums...just looking for more replies
need help picking a vid card...here's my situation.
p4 2.4c
1024 corsair XMS 3200
abit IC7
viewsonic p95f+B (good 19" CRT)...
you don't need the 256 meg version to flash the bios to the XT bios. and the 9800XT is a huge waste of money. just get an x800 pro for slightly more. if you're gonna get a 9800 pro, just get the 128 meg version for around $200...or a refurbished one for like $170
yeah you're better off buying a refurbished 256-bit 9800p instead of that 128-bit garbage. you'll be sorry if you buy it, imo...it'll be much slower than the real 9800p's
if i were you i would really try hard to save and get the 9800 pro...the 9600xt really isn't any good, imo...and the 9800 pro isn't THAT much more expensive
i'm talking about 128-bit not 128 Megabyte. ram speed not ram size.
128-bit RAM means you have half the memory bandwidth of the 256-bit card...that means your card is slower at all settings...period.
i'm well aware that 256 megs of ram isn't really necessary right now because most games...
do not buy the $164 9800 pro's...they are "lite" versions with 128-bit RAM instead of 256-bit...they are slow and crappy. you will have to spend around $200 for a 256-bit one.
the other thing you should watch out for is an upgrade path. can you buy a faster processor for the mobo you buy...
yes i also hate the 'u' and 'ur'

...hideous
yes...i mean...alienware are fast i bet...and they're made non-stupidly so you can actually upgrade them...unlike dell/gateway/compaq shit. but building your own will save you a lot of $$ and give you a great experience building your own machine...you'll have a lot more pride in it that...
lol i have no idea :)
i dunno...i think i want to try to softmod mine with the XT bios and OC it to XT speeds...and i read that the sapphire model in question now uses the R360 core and the XT PCB, and people are having lots of success with the bios/oc
also, they have a refurbished version...

msi's website says it's 256-bit...hmm...i saw it there first and then just went to newegg for a price...didn't actually read that part of the description...
i wouldn't say "much" better...
the MSI card is 256-bit
does your monitor support 2048X1536? i hope 1600 x 1200 85Hz is good enough
the clock difference is like 3 Mhz...and i bet it overclocks better...
the opengl 1.5 vs 2.0 isn't that big of a deal...
though all these 3...
why not just spend $3 more and get the MSI card?...free games...retail box...looks cooler...probably OC's well with that nice heatsink/fan...MSI = quality.
yea...it's not as simple or safe-ish as it is to do a bios mod...and it's not like you're saving THAT much money...they get so excited....as if you're getting an x800xt out of a 9800p :\
still interesting though :p
or how about you just bleed to death? or have to apply a tourniquet...and have some system where you have to flick the mouse in a specific pattern or you fail to put it on! then you still have to get to a hospital or risk the dreaded seeeeepptttiiccc innnnfeeeccctionnnnnnnnn nnnoooooooo
