No, that just means that each pipe can do either vertex or pixel work not both at the same time.

x2 3800+ is good enough if you know how to overclock. Make sure you dont get the single core 3800. Get an antec or something with 480w or more. With that kind of budget you could definitely get a cheap 7800gtx isntead of a gt, the extra 4 pipes are worth it.

THe only thing i dont like about 1gb sticks is they dont overclock very well.

They've always been like that. The x850 does get close to the 7800 in some games.

Have you tried taking out the sound card?
