Finally made the jump today. After five years of trusty service I decommissioned my old 4:3 17" and bought a glorious 22" Syncmaster B2230. The 1920x1080 resolution is awesome. I don't know why I have waited this long. It takes a bit of getting used to, having basically double the screen I used to have. But fiddling around a bit with TF2 and Company of Heroes soon made me realize what I have been missing out on. If you're still on 1280x1024, change. Do eet. Nao!

I am really surprised at how well my GPU seems to cope with all those extra pixels it needs to generate now. I had expected more trouble and maybe the lowering of some settings in the more demanding games.

Yeah, I knew I was missing out, but I'm not sure why I waited so long either. It's like the most dramatic improvement to my computer I've ever made.

Went from a 16" FS CRT to 23" WS LCD. The detail is startling with this monitor at 1080p. I hardly recognized my games - it was like I had received a major graphic upgrade to all my games. It's not just the resolution, but the clarity of this new monitor is amazing.

Wish I could say the same! My video card is absolutely crippled by this resolution in most of my games.

I've ordered a new PSU to handle any new video card [that I'm still deciding on]. It should be here any minute!

My HD3870 seems to cope with the resolution fine, but recently it's started to heat up a lot. Not looking healthy.
 
I also recently went from 4:3 to 16:9 and its a worlds difference.
 
Hahaha I got so confused with Raz and Druckles' mistake. I was scratching my head going, "have I really been wrong the dozens of times I've referenced my 16:10 resolution as being 1920 x 1200?"

Anyway, agreed with you 100% Shaker. I switched from an old 1280x1024 17" LCD to a 26" widescreen 1920x1200 about two years back and I could never EVER EVER go back. I love it.
 
Oh lawl. I didn't even notice I put 1280. I think it's because I was reading his 1080, thinking 12, and combined the two without checking it.

I actually have a factory defect. I had to create custom drivers to get my operation system and applications to acknowledge my extra 153,600 pixels.

Bought my samsung 22" syncmaster2243 not too long ago. Love it to death.
 
Only 1680 x 1050 here, but going widescreen has to be the best design innovation in all displays. Also, multitasking, especially with Win7's neat snapping feature, heeeeeeaaaven.

Perfection! There is no single perfect aspect for gaming. It depends on the game. The classics all use fullscreen of course. (it's cool though, because widescreen can display Fullscreen too) It's true though, that 16:10 is better than 16:9 for fullscreen games.

When it comes to modern games, some games are made for 16:9, and some can suit 16:10 just as well, and may in fact be better, depending on preference. I've noticed that some prefer 16:9 for gaming, though I haven't a preference at this point, personally. The difference between 16:9 and 16:10 is pretty small, obviously. 4:3 is almost square, so it's quite different.

I prefer widescreen because it is closer to the human range of vision than fullscreen.

I had a 19 inch (1440x900) and jumped to a 23 inch for the 1920x1280, and couldnt believe what a difference it makes.

Especially in FPS games. The widescreen gives you better peripherals in something like BC2.
 
I'm thinking of jumping to a 1080p monitor but I've had a hard time finding a decent priced monitor with two hdmi ports. Or one hdmi and one dvi.
 
How do these monitors handle older games that only allow 1024x768 or lower? Does it stretch them or add borders?
 
Er, by stretch do you mean not maintain the aspect ratio? Or just stretch until it fills the screen, maintaining original aspect? Any monitor will do the latter, but I think you can use software like for your video card if you want it to not stretch the output at all, and maintain crisp 1:1 pixel ratio, thus giving you a big black border around the whole image.

Stretches original resolution to fit the new aspect ratio. TBH I don't notice it since any game it's doing that with is probably already a tiny resolution like 1024x768 or lower. I play Starcraft (which might even just be 800x600) on my 26" 16:10 monitor and I barely notice.

No, no it doesn't. It stretches it until the top and bottom reach the top and bottom of the screen, but it does not "fit" the new aspect ratio. That would mean it stretches it out horizontally resulting in everyone looking fat.

iirc this is what it does on my monitor. The picture fills the screen in both horizontal and vertical. SC1 is so pixely anyway that it doesn't bother me at all.

I found that all of my games have the ability to do 1920x1080, even if isn't selectable from the game menu or whatever. You can edit configuration files. I'm not saying that will work for any game, but it worked for all of my games.

You can usually control whether it scales to fit the screen with your video card.

However, the legacy ATI video card drivers don't have the scaling feature, I can say for certain. (e.g. X1900XT). So, you get windowboxing (horz.&vert. borders), and I doubt you will like that.

So, it's pretty weird: setting a game resolution to run at 1440x1080 (to preserve the intended aspect of a fullscreen game), obviously there will be borders on the sides, but it still has a border at the top and bottom, even though the resolution should be top to bottom on a 1080p monitor. Doesn't make sense to me, but I don't know, it's my first LCD. ****ing windowboxing my shit, I blame the old video card drivers. And I blame Windows 7 for not letting ATi Tray Tools work so I might be able to fix it.

OF course, it doesn't really matter, this video card is ass for HD resolution gaming and I'll be replacing it shortly.

Yep. There are unfortunately several games which don't support anything beyond 1280x1024, and certainly nothing in widescreen. It just means everyone in the real world looks a little bit thinner after a while.
 
Sorry Raz, but since you have a visual disorder that prevents you from telling a circle from an oval, or a rectangle from a square, you won't be able to see what's wrong.
 
But on a related note, Other non-widescreen games that get their widescreen fix, look around that site for other bells and whistles.

I don't see KOTOR II in that list, though, and I'm sure the resolution on that was somewhat limiting. It may have widescreen support, but only up to something smaller than I wanted.
