2003 Release date...can anyone verify?

i said earlier....... flame, and i flame back.

what else am i suppsoed to do, other than form my own ideas from the answers i got , if i have not played the stolen build? i mean really, your question has the most obvious answer.

ask a silly question i do the same. it's not that i don't value you opinion, but your comments, some of them, are not help. right on the second or third page i agreed with the release date, once i had it confirmed. I pushed for further response. but now, you assault my intelligence. i just pay kind with kind. fair. is it not?

anyway, i've had the most important questions asnwered...there was no "official" release date, it was done via email and on forums such as this. That was all i was looking for. Everyone has based the september 30th release on these things.
that was my whole question: can anyone prove the validity of the statements being "official". The answer was no, it was never officially announced.

Me personal opinion is the game wasn't done at all. Not just DX9 or whatever....

I think a good portion (models/maps/sounds/engine/physics etc) of the actual content was incomplete.

I don't think it would have added a year+ to the time of the game finally being released otherwise.

And I believe the stolen build did work in dx8 and dx9....someone who has played it would have to confirm that though. I could be wrong on that though.

This is correct. Gabe even said the delay wasn't due to the stolen code or files. He said it was just due to poor planning. The game just wasn't complete at all and it took another year to finish it.

cadaveca said:
you have admitted to using the stolen build...do you think that after denying Valve's request you deserve to recieve the real version? I don't think that I would be deserving if i went behind someones back to take a look at their secrets. This is why i ask questions

I'll freely admit I used it too and yes I'm still getting the game. It's not a matter of deserving anything. I will pay money to them and in return they will give me the game.

I think you forgot that Gabe stated it at E3 last year (in the link I provided). Not in email, not on forums.

Didn't you already admit this yourself earlier?

If that isn't enough, than I think you're very selectively picking what you want to hear.

Thank you for your input...really.

i know that there were DX9 files there, as this has been stated before, but was there the same shader detail as in dx9b?

I'd like to say that it was in the industry's fault for the delay, with the sporadic hardware releases, and microsoft having people submit their own versions of DX9b was attrocious, IMHO. i almostthink it was ati's plan to get Nvidia bad media...microsoft DID go with ATI's DX structure for 9b. Thankfully we saw a change with 9c.

If you think you are justified in using the stolen build because you WILL buy the game, i kinda agree with that, but i decided that honoring valve's request would be better. If you used it just because of impatience, and with no intention to buy the game, then i think that is wrong.

yes, i said that I agreed Gabe said it, but that was not an "official statement of release", you know what i mean. that was an estimated target for release. but before that, Vugames had already said in the holiday season....according to some of those links. irecall one saying that against gabes claims, VUgames said the holidays. Vugames got that info from somewhere.
there was no gold announcement, but people think that last year was officail...well, how can it be official with no gold statement? get where i am heading now?

Why is this thread 5 pages now? :O Get with the times! It's over! Move on!

Aren't you kinda doing what you have stated others have done throughout this thread with that statement? No proof...just your opinion I mean.

Agreed.

Believe what you will cadaveca. I really don't think a single person will ever convince you otherwise.

I'm done :)

how can you have an official release date without a gold copy?

everyone says this now...how come noone said this last year?

this is what i would like to know...not arguing what i think..i want to know what you base your opinions on..pretty simple. no need to defend yourself to me...

paranoid much? seriously, theres no way for him to get your ip via this forum, i don't think the authorities will do anything other than laugh at your paranoid delusions.

release dates always get set long before a game has gone gold, thats part of the reason why so many games get delayed.

last year everyone had more faith in valve and took their date as official, but then it became clear they would miss the date, and then miss holidays 2003, etc, etc, and recently it has become clear that vivendi has final say on the "official" release date, and they haven't informed valve when that will be.

well, that was my thoughts, but should have vivendi always had the "official say" as to release? had they set a specific date before?

i know now that last years date was based on gabe's staements, or someone posing as him( i can't deny any possiblity, just my nature). So that was answered.
But why do people, in light of your last sentence, think valve has say? I don't quite follow how people think differently...they are the publisher, after all. it's them in charge of retail distribution.

in regards to my firewall, i have 3 firewall between me and my modem. someone tried an AIM attack, (which of course i never use) andi logged it...i made my post, and it stopped. Uh, i know going to the authorities will go nowhere, however, i can submit my firewall logs and the info i have to SANS, who can then assign it to the handler to watch. In case you are not familiar, this is regualar routine for hack/trojan monitoring.

I have no real contribution to the substance of this thread (such as it is), but I can say that I am amused enough to emerge from the shadows of lurker-dom long enough to make a quick comment.

Cada, by my reading, you either are a writer or have intention of being one. The irony is that even that much is hardly clear, because you seem to be an exceptionally poor communicator. I mean no offense, so take it as you will, but while obscurely-presented statements and ideas are hardly unusual in a public forum, it is amusing to me that a writer -- whose occupation revolves almost entirely around communication -- would be prone to such indiscernible expression and grammar. I sincerely hope you have a highly skilled editor.

If, as you state, you are merely seeking the help of a community of gamers to answer your questions, doesn't it seem just a little bit counterproductive to berate and insult - even threaten - those that you are asking for help? Humility would seem to be the desired approach, along with a heavy dose of maturity-based dismissal of any flames that result from your questioning. "You flame, I flame" hardly accomplishes information-gathering, if that is actually your intent.

If it is hard information that you are after, why not search for it yourself, as others have suggested? Throwing it out repeatedly as a challenge to others isn't research, it's laziness. You asked the question, apparently did not get the response you were hunting for, and then kept at it ad nauseum until you provoked annoyance, frustration, and anger. Hopefully your secretary took a more productive tack.

Personally, I am not a writer, and don't claim any expertise as such, so feel free to take my 2¢ as you wish.

-A 27-year-old "kiddie"

thanks for your input..
i did search for myself, and my questions were unanswered, or led to further questions which did not have an answer.

Yes, some of my post were childish, but having my secretary yell at me to leave her alone so she can get work done, and having people post the same thing over and over agian kinda gets to ya. i asked for peoples opinions on a situation, not my ideas, and for the first page or so, things were going well... when i did not seem to agree with someones point, it was like they made it a personal mission to prove my thought wrong. So much for getting the people's opinion...

i had specific questions, and becasue of the liberal use of links here, i thought someone could provide me with such. I did get what i needed in the end, and for that am grateful.

i have one more thing to add tho..someone mentioned that sierra was always owned by vivendi, and this is not true. when sierra was making "King's Quest", i don't think vivendi was even outside the water industy..or even part of it. Anyway, here's a breakdown of Seirra's milestones:

1980 - Ken and Roberta Williams establish On-Line Systems, later renamed to Sierra On-Line
1980 - The company changes its name to Sierra On-Line
1984 - Sierra implements its signature AGI engine for the first time
1989 - Sierra becomes a publicly traded company
1990 - Sierra acquires Dynamix
1992 - Sierra acquires Bright Star Technologies
1993 - Sierra acquires Coktel Vision
1995 - Sierra acquires Green Thumb Software, Impressions Software and Papyrus Design Group.
1996 - Sierra acquired by Cendant
1997 - Cendant acquires Berkeley Systems, Books That Work and Headgate
1998 - Sierra development portion spun off as Yosemite Entertainment
1999 - Yosemite Entertainment folds, assets acquired by Codemasters
1999 - Cendant software acquired by Havas Interactive, subsidiary of Vivendi Communications
2001 - Sierra disbands its Dynamix studio
2002 - Sierra On-Line changes name to Sierra Entertainment

it waslinks to info such as this that i was looiking for in the first place. thank you to those who provided links, and who's flames kept me from getting any work done all afternoon! It went by so quick!

Since you have such expertise, explain to me why the hell you have 3 firewalls?? What are you doing? Btw. How did he get your address to use the exploit?

I find you very amusing and very disturbing at the same time. :(

And another thing... you come here asking for help yet deny everything we give you? How do you think that makes us feel? Frustrated? Yes.

You remind me of a child that is hungry but does not want anything you put out for it... except maybe candy.

Sorry...but noone would offer a link, or new info , without me arguing my point that was not a point.

:) WORD is my editor..does grammar too! Besides, the writing part is something on the side, not really work. Ya'all helped me waste an afternoon....

i tried repeatedly to get more info, and it was hard, but i did, in the end get what i wanted. To those i frustrated, sorry. I got what i wanted.

I actually obtained it quite a while before I joined any forum or new anything beyond that it had been leaked. I suppose you could argue it was out of impatience, but that really wasn't the case. I wanted to try out the new map editor. I didn't and don't care about the content of it. My motive was merely the editor. Now I don't pretend that it was morally right to obtain illegal software, but I didn't personally harm Valve by doing so, didn't spoil the game for myself, and fully intend to purchase it when it comes out. So, all in all, I have no regrets about it.

I'm done with this thread, but I just wanted to add something. About people becoming frustrated and flaming you, consider that there may have actually been a reason for this. Much of the time you basically implied we were all liars when we all experienced this first hand and continued to deny that any of our links were authenticate. You went on about how we should respect your opinion, when you seemed to give no reciprical respect to ours, which were based on first hand knowledge. Of course that's going to frustrate people.

Then you went on to pretty much insult everyone, even the people who actually tried to help, by saying everyone was being immature and adolescent. I personally dug around quite a bit for links to show you what we were all talking about. But instead of any thanks, I get told that I'm lying, my links to major news sites are no good, I'm immature and am guilty of not being able to debate. (Perhaps this wasn't directed at everyone, but if it wasn't you should have clarified that.) Sorry, but I, and other people in this thread I imagine, don't really appreciate that very much. So of course this will lead to some frustration and bad feelings. It's not exactly surprising.

You could have easily gotten all the info you wanted, in far less time if you had just been a bit less conrontational and actually listened to what people had to say. Most of this thread was completely unecessary.

But I'm glad that you were finally able to obtain all the info you wanted. Hope it helps with whatever your doing.

Anyway, I'm out of here.

Well, it's good that you got what you wanted. Just hope you understand that agrivating people into giving you what you want is a surefire way to gain enemies.

What do you mean by arguing your point that was not a point?

Btw. You got plenty of links and confirmed statements by Gabe but still you wanted more. You continually made paradoxical statements and even replied the same posts more than once. That does not seem like the thinking of a logical person. You remind me of my father. He's been addicted to pills (medicine) for almost 15 years now. It's really messed him up, and you remind me of his way of thinking. Not very coherent and very self-involved.

Hope your on the straight and narrow, buddy :)

PS. Dude, you do NOT NEED 3 firewalls. One configured correctly is enough ;)

EDIT: Read Nutrino's post above mine. I had some thoughts that were summed up pretty well there too.

What is happening? I'm not sure that you realize that the delay of Half-Life 2 is probably the most notorious let down in the gaming world in at least the last 10 years!!! It absolutely destroyed a lot of people's hopes/whatever else. There were people who built new computers specifically for Half-Life 2. How in the world can you deny that this ever happened???

Oh yeah, cadaveca, Valve was indeed hacked, the beta (well...) was stolen by using an Outlook Express exploit IIRC. The hard drive theft was not related to the HL2 delay.

For more information see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half_life_2

I know I said I was leaving, but I find that too funny that wikipedia actually lists Hl2. :O

Truly an amazing online enyclopedia, heh.

i was not asking to be proven wrong. but because of the lack of immaturity of some of the forum members, it seems that this is the only way they will post."HAHA! I'M RIGHT YOU'RE WRONG!" I mean, really, i've been outta adolescence for a while now.

Discussion....not bragging rights.

It was after this that the flaming began. I did not start it, but it got more links. I already apologized...there's not more than that that i can do...really. I did thank everyone. I continually asked people to post info only, and not flames. happened anyway, and does in just about every thread. Sorry this one sticks out for ya....

But noone has expalined, why, with no gold, everyone thought a date from valve and not vivendi, constituted a release date. Vivendi has control of release...

and i never said the theft had anything to do with the delay..i always have blamed it on M$

i cannot divulge network security...lol

modem>hardware firewall(router)>fileserver with software firewall>hardware router for LAN.....this is a typical network for businesses.

oh, i agree with you...i said that from the start...but did you even look at the link in the VERY FIRST post in this thread?
everyone asks me for proof...where is the contridiction..complains i don't have links myself, but i provided all of these things quite easily... as soon as i was asked for it...seems noone looked.

i got the gaming side of things, which i asked for...
why does noone look at my side, and weigh the evidence for themselves? i did not ask for judgements on whether my sources were right or not, but everytime i stated something new, i porvided a link. i merely asked for the same. i never got it. flaming started, i retailiated..and not right away. i was just as choaked as you were are the turn of events, but in retrospect, it got me what i wanted, so i am satisfied.

i think "someone" even entered the thread while backing me up, adn then turned to the flamin side..lol...
anyway i enjoyed the discussion! Read it again, in not so heated moments, and without distraction, and it does kinda make sense...
otherwise "someone" would not have posted the link about vivendi and vavle disagreeing about the release

i never responded...sry

i don't doubt that there was a delay...but why? Gabe said it was making improvements and such....

my question is WHO's delay it was....by valve's time? vivendi's? The fans? who should be upset, and who should be cowering for the mistake? All three i mentioned say the other 2, in varying factions, but noone has answered really why. and i don't mean on this thread.. i mean TRULY...what caused the delay, to have caused this "black anniversary"? Valve's mismanaged time? Viviendi's underhanded contract disputes? Fans impatientence?

I cannot answer that question.....it's like the game release date..noone knows.

Whooaaa Wait a second her... I shouldn't have to prove the original date was sept 30th 2003... I was band from these forums on and about the sept 30th 2003 release date... You want someone to dig up a year old thread??... I have seen where you're going with this Cadvesa or whatever your name is..... There were plenty of official announcements as to the sept 30th 2003 release date, In fact, every on here but me was sure of the sept 30th 2003 release date... It was definitely so, as preached by Valve!!!!!
If you're gonna raise a debate, make sure yuou do it in due time numnuts!!!! This whole question should be put to rest unless brought up by someone who was here sept 30th 2003!!!!!!!

BTW I was Steelhed When this all happened, I don't have privy to that name anymore when I joined august of 2003... I think you're stabbing in the dark!!! The release date was set at sept 30th 2003...... If you don't have a link to disprove this than I suggest you drop it!! You're dealing with a whole community that was promised the game Sept 30th By Valve, And Was Let down for whatever reason, Now, Being you're a newbie, I Understand, But don't take this discussion a place where you have not been Thank You!

seeing how it was the anniversary, i thought i'd like to know how the thing began in the first place. According to the hardware side of things, it was due to microsoft.

According to the forums, it was VAlve (i've never denied this, so i'm not sure what your point is), from valve it was, well, i'm not sure, and from vivendi - valve. 2 for valve says valve's the culprit.....but why?

Does it really matter at this point? We are gonna see the game, Whether it's one month or 6 months, Were gonna see it... What I'm saying is, From all your post previous, You're looking for some proof that Valve told us sept 30th 2003, Maybe this is genuine, Maybe its to put us in our place! Whatever the reason, We were here to see it, and you weren't, So, Take our word for it, It was promised... Let it rest, because this has been an ugly discussion for both Valve and Us.... Anyway, We are going to see an awesome game, with some superior MOD's... We are stoked, one way or another!!! Enjoy.....

Cada read this interview with Doug Lombardi. He acnknowledges Valve were trying to release on September 30th with this statement

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=55526

Eurogamer: What's Valve been up to since September, since that fateful incident...?

Doug Lombardi said:
Sheesh, well to rewind, we came out of last summer aggressively still trying to hit that end of summer last year date [September 30th], we realised that we weren't going to make that, and we announced that we were going to be a little further out, probably in the winter time or whatever....

Other reasons it didn't hit September 30th -> Steam was insanely buggy and incomplete. Buying functions were not yet added in, it crashed incessantly, account security creation problems.
