2012: The Year The Internet Ends

There are hundreds of companies who function entirely on the internet and who wouldn't be included in these new packages. Despite not being mainstreem enough to be included, many still have a lot of money and would have no choice but to do everything they can to stop this. However, for them to make a dent in a company as big as Comcast they'd have to team up, which is slightly less believable.

As implausible as it may sound, I'm worried that plans are already being drawn up for this. It's unlike big companies to invest so much in a scheme if it's as completely and obviously flawed as people are making out.

Never gonna happen. All the small businesses which can't make the lucrative deals with ISPs would be up in :arms:, they would lose money, so the governments would lose taxes.

Fearmongering.

It's a toll. You pay a small fee to be on their service - in this case being a part of the internet. If a business wants to be successful, they won't really have much of a choice.

There are already things like this. My mom and stepdad own a company - places want to charge them to list them on websites where they may be seen. Even the phone book does this. They want a lot of money. Hundreds annually - not sure if that is yearly or bi yearly or what.

In the scheme of business though, it's possibly a no-brainer to submit and pay up in order to be more successful.

Do you even realize what a huge opportunity it is for any business to have their entire potential client base in the confinement of 2000 websites? Ad space revenue would sky rocket.

Also, small businesses would still use internet technology to handle online shopping. It's not like they're closing down the rest of the internet, just prioritizing bandwidth allocation or requiring a small fee like a highway toll.

Not like it matters- megacorp America has money in all the pockets that matter.

Nevar going to happen....

evAr!!1!

Think about individual people's websites, like portfolio sites. We'd be ****ed.

Wouldn't matter. The world's gonna end in 2012 anyway.

Wouldn't matter. The world's gonna end in 2012 anyway.

But thats a side effect of this. If we preserve net neutrality, then we can avert the end of the world. If the internet goes under, then all the internet psychos and Anons will be forced out into the real world, and that is how the world will end.

The internet is not something you just have set packages on. It's not a TV. It's a series of tubes!

None of this will matter anyway when the all-destroying comet of 2012 annihilates life on our planet.

Yet another reason to move to canada. Its like the USA doesnt want anyone living here anymore.
Don't expect a warm welcome. Many Canadians (especially those here in HL2.net) don't seem to like Americans.

Besides, if American society was to ever belly-up, Canada will soon follow. All the psychotic anarchists and survivalist leftovers of the former U.S. will overwhelm the country.

EDIT> Funny how I somehow seem to relate the end of American society to the ruthless takeover of the internets. :|

You know, I did write a three paragraph response, but TBH the sheer stupidity of this whole thing speaks louder.

Suffice to say its stupid, impractical, and wont happen.

Ready at the will sir.

America's next president is more than likely going to be Barack Obama...
I think you are underestimating the incredible power of a vagina, and the sheer stupidity of 51% of Americans

well if the standard isnt adopted internationaly you could still use programs like TOR to connect through computers in other countries. hackers will always find a way... fear not.

All this "Net Neutrality" pisses me off. There's literally no evidence that they provide.

If ISPs really went public with this, then I might do something about it. But right now, it feels like Global Warming did at first.

I can foresee it being utter bollocks

On Thursday, Time Warner Cable will start trials of cell-phone-like Internet access plans for its customers in Beaumont, Texas. Under the plans, Time Warner will charge an overage fee to any customers who download or upload more than a pre-set amount, according to an AP story out today.

how is this for a start?

That's an upload/download limit? Kinda old hat, and unrelated to net neutrality.

That has nothing to do with net neutrality.

It deals with the separate issue of usage caps, something us Australians have always had to deal with and some people think are inevitable for places that currently have unlimited internet usage.

its a start in the right direction if they want to monitor peoples actions though.

There's no-one which actually allows unlimited internet usage. There's usually a "Fair Usage Policy" in the small print. I believe the article mentions it; it's far too high to worry about, but they don't advertise it anyway.

Edit:

its a start in the right direction if they want to monitor peoples actions though.

I thought we were talking about Net Neutrality, not Big Brother

Beaumont is a small town anyways.....also didn't comcast buy out time warner in texas????

I am not joking when i say the following : I will grab my hitting wrench (Adrain Shephards anti-crowbar) and personally start riots in the streets. My intar-web buddies will help too , or else. . .

Speaking of the usage caps mentioned earlier... My uncle can't get broadband out where he lives, and so recently he got Satellite internet with Hughes internet.

The thing that pisses me off, is that he can't use youtube or anything really except browsing websites, with the shitty speeds he gets and is paying for, and the worst part is the usage caps. If he so much as downloads 100 megabytes or less, I forget what it is, they restrict his speeds and it becomes SLOWER than dialup. Literally slower than 56 dialup. We're talking about 1kbs that doesn't even allow him to finish loading websites, as they time out before they are loaded.

It's BULLshit.

I really think there needs to be better ways to connect the more rural areas of the country to the internet at high speeds. The sucky thing is, they're not even really that much rural, yet they are way too far away from the nearest last mile provider.

It's probably very true that there are plans to literally dominate the internet. They have the money to dictate the shape of the net, and that's all it boils down to really. But if enough people are against domination of the net by large corporate entities then they won't beable to sell their idea of subscription access.

I can't see it happening to be honest, it's like a dictators way of clamping down on information control over the net, with us footing the bill. But if it does happen people won't have any of it, it'll make everyone furious.

*readies wrench by slapping it into hand several times in a cool fashion* Yeah , furious.

If the HL2.nets get lost in this, I will make it my job to murder every person who's idea this is, the owners of the remaining websites, and possibly Bill Gates

better download the internets now while it's still free.
