3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3)

In the third of the three videos VictimOfScience posted, do you think the sword could get any larger? Any worries that it might make the combat a bit too easy? Either way those vids are giving me a NES Zelda flashback. It this game ends up anywhere even close to that Zelda game it's a surefire buy for me.

Hard to say. Surely they would have thought of such things, but you never know. Maybe the second quest features supremely powerful enemies. The Zelda and Dragon Warrior references are all over the place and I am so thankful. This will be totally fun.

New pics and of course it still looks kick-ass:

I wonder if some people thought of something like this when they first heard about a 3D zelda game.

Looks pretty cool. When does this drop in Japan?

Raz hates it because I told him that I hate it. You such a copy cat raz.

Is it ONLY me that thinks its OVERBLURRED?! They should turn it down a notch, jesus! I get a headache by just looking at the screens and the videos. Looks good otherwise.

Here's the latest Intel on 3D Dot Game Heroes (from Destructoid):

* The game is being designed to be beatable by all skill levels, although an Extremely Hard mode is in the works.
* Enemies break apart into blocks whenever defeated. The blocks adhere to physics, meaning they randomly disassemble upon death. The player character can also roll the blocks around on the floor.
* There is a character edit mode, where players can alter the look of the various character classes in any way they see fit.
* You can change characters during the loading screen.
* There is no co-op or online play. Dot Game is a purely single-player affair.
* It's a retail game, not a download. Also, there's no chance of an Xbox 360 version. It's a PS3 exclusive.
* The main game should take up to thirty hours to beat, with the sidequests and extras bumping the hour quota up to fifty.
* As with Zelda, you can save anytime, but restarting from a save will see you begin at a pre-set checkpoint (ie, the beginning of dungeons or the nearest inn).
* Extras include weapon customization and minigames that "will consume you."
* There is no voice acting. Voices are represented with sounds.
* Spelunker can be unlocked as a main character.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA! YES!!

Sony's Twitter said:
No need to import - 3D Dot Game Heroes for PS3 is DEFINITELY coming to NA! Spread the word, more to come.

How amazingly awesome is this???? I cannot wait to get more details on the NA version!!

Famitsu Review Bits (via 1up):

3D Dot Game Heroes (8/8/7/7, 30 points): Famitsu's review of From Software's silly retro-RPG romp is about what you'd expect. "The gameplay and so on is one enormous homage to Zelda and there are references to NES games everywhere, making this a nostalgia-laden trip," one reviewer wrote. "The graphics and blocky animations are very pretty, fusing old with new seamlessly, but the game itself is, for better or for worse, pretty orthodox."

Your opinion of the game will likely depend on your age more than anything else, the way Famitsu sees it. "The sheer amount of ripoffs...er, homages to other games is enough to put a smile on the face of any thirtysomething gamer," as one put it. "It's a well-made title and fun in its own right, but if you try to evaluate this as a new and original game, then you can't help but start to have doubts."

Sounds like exactly what I wanted. I don't buy a title like this because it adds crazy new gameplay elements and pushes the envelope. I buy it because it looks brilliant and plays exactly as I would imagine a 2D NES-style game would in 3D. Duh!!

Oh.

Well I mean, duh.

The real question is when.

Yeah, not sure when. Hopefully it will be soon. I mean, if it can be officially leaked that the N(orth)A(merican) version is "definitely" coming, then solid details cannot be too far off as the deal has been inked.

DATED FOR NA RELEASE!!!!

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA -- NOVEMBER 17, 2009 -- Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today revealed that it has licensed the rights to your childhood memories. Pixels rule again in the ultimate retro action-adventure game 3D Dot Game Heroes™ for PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, slated to land in North America on May 11, 2010.

Anyone who take Famitsu's reviews seriosly these days needs a reality-check, no offense.

Whilst I'm sure this might be a good game, keep in mind Famitsu is the same magazine which gave the first Gundam game on the PS3 top-scores, with the rest of the world giving'em an average of like four out of ten!!

None taken. You are quite right that their reviews are absolutely ridiculous and laughable in many cases. Still the commentary about the game is worth considering and from everything that I have seen and read the game sounds absolutely brilliant in every way. I cannot wait to see if it is true.

I just ordered the soundtrack from Play-Asia and can't wait to get it (out on the 25th of Nov). I can only assume Atlus will include it in the Special Edition when it inevitably drops over here, along with (hopefully) an art book and other goodies (bag of blocks to create a hero with?). :E

It's cool that they're staying so faithful to the gameplay style of a traditional 2d RPG.

I don't know if it's just the trailer but they're kind of going overboard with all the 'retro' sound effects. Retro being 'in' is kind of old now, so I don't think they should overplay it so much and make it tacky.

I saw there was a new trailer for this on another site but wanted to watch it on youtube(faster loading times), so I came here and found it. I can always count on halflife2.net:)

This is my most wanted game currently. It does not get much more nostalgic than this. So beautiful. I imported the soundtrack from Japan months ago and am extremely eager to actually play along to the music as its some of the best I have heard in a game.

Looks kinda cool. I loved Zelda [1] and the SNES version when I was a kid. It does come off as sort of a 'speed-up' 'super weapon hack' clone of Zelda to me though. It sullies the game!

Great preview. Hard to believe that it will be out in a month! It feels like I have been waiting forever even though this was not even announced that long ago. I am just glad it is being released outside of Japan.

What the **** guys. This got released and the launch hype was nowhere to be found.

I'm waiting for my RDR $20 preorder gift certificate before I order this. Is there anyone that jumped the gun and wants to let us know how it is?

It's a retail game priced around ~$35. If you're preordering RDR from Amazon and plan on getting this it's a heckuva deal if you apply the $20 from RDR to this.

Since I'm not on the Red Dead bandwagon and don't have any other games to play, I plan to get this either today and tomorrow. I'll be sure to post my thoughts when I do.

I got it. Its flipping awesome. Memories of the first time I romped through Hyrule flood my mind as I play. The updated graphics are awesome. The music is extremely special. The gameplay is actually harder than you might think which goes with the old-school aesthetic. There are loads of in-joke for gamers and fans of From Software too. I have not played with the character editor yet, but it has virtually endless possibilities. I will likely try to make a Guybrush Threepwood character. :E

Anyway, if you are a fan of the old-school gaming that has been brought into the 21st century, then this is without a doubt the game for you. I mean, shit, DS games cost the same price and you get arguably more bang for your buck with this work of love. Now everyone with a PS3 go get it!! The devs have already stated that they will put A LOT more content into the next one should our lust warrant another. Let's make it so!!

It's a fun game. But NOT THAT great. The gameplay does grow old on you, unless you are a huge, huge old school zelda-like gameplay fan

This game oozes A Link to the Past. I'm really enjoying it so far. A bit upset because I got close to the Desert Temple, stayed at an inn nearby (which I thought was like saving my game) quit the game then came back to see it didn't save my progress at all. So I've got to do everything between temple 2 and temple 3 all over again.

Graphics and sound are very impressive as are the inside jokes and the way the game feels. Before I played, I worried the massive sword would make things too easy, but hasn't been the case so far. The only thing that I wasn't crazy about was the red marker on the map showing the direction to the next temple at all times. I kind of miss looking for them like the original Zelda. A small complaint and not a big deal.

Agree with VOS that the original Zelda is one of the most perfect games ever created next to Xcom IMO.

You mean how the sword seems to "pop" into a giant blade when you attack? I thought maybe it was related to the power of your attack, but I guess what you're saying is that it's purely visual. In which case, that is awesome.
