Pretty simple. Why do you smoke?

Do you prefer your lungs to be like this:

as opposed to this:

I will seriously laugh in your face when you're diagnosed with cancer, and the NHS refuse to pay for any kind of medical treatment.

Both of those lungs look disgusting.

But strangely enough, I was wondering this also this morning. Why do people start smoking? I smoked a few cigarettes once when i was younger, and I was like "Wtf, this is gross as hell." I dont get why inhaling smoke is so appealing.

because whit man: you look like a 50's movies star
whit woman: you look like a european femme fatale

This is pretty much what I see every time I see someone smoking

a question to militant non-smokers ..why the hell do you care what other people do? why must you make it a point to point out what smokers already know?

oh and to answer your oversimplistic question with an oversimplistic answer: who likes booze the first time they try it, put up your hands ..and I'm talking about ****ing peach sshnappes

you are? Well, I didn't like peach shnappes, but I was 14, and didn't know it was booze, and was downing Mikes hard lemonade, and was drunk after 3-4 of th em, and had no clue wtf was up. Scared the shit out of me.

Because I think its ****ing gross and every time I walk out of any building at my school I had to wade through a crowd of smokers that hang around at the door and have to smell and breath in their nasty cancercloud.

Then you have far greater problems than worrying about other people smoking.

If smokers know the dangers and that, then why the **** do they do it?

Young people (like myself) who smoke always think "I'm not going to die of cancer." - oh boy, I'd love to see you 40 years down the line unable to get up your stairs because you get out of breath so easily.

use another door?

Theres only two doors. One in the front, one in the back. Going out the back would result in a almost mile long walk around the building to get to my car which was only 15 ft from the front door.

I find smoking to be pretty much just as offensive as someone having bad body odor. If im talking to someone and they start smoking its really annoying. I have to put up with the nasty smell, and breath the nasty smoke that comes back out of their mouth. And the smell gets in my clothes and I have to smell like cigarettes all day. Then they have to spit and cough all the time, its just really unpleasant to be around.

There are far worse addictions than smoking :p

Apathy, for example. That's a pretty dangerous thing to get caught up in.

If smokers know the dangers and that, then why the **** do they do it?

Why do people drink, eat unhealthy, **** without protection, drive under influence, cheat on their partners, make love in parks frequented by rapists and axe-wielding murderers or vote for American Idol? Because they want to.

And I think it is ****ing disgusting how people can feel smug (or at least claim they do) about people who get lung cancer. People start smoking, maybe from peer pressure, maybe they want some stress relief, whatever, it's the human condition. We all have our foibles and faults.

In the UK the amount of taxation gleamed of tobacco sales more than enough pays for the healthcare needed on the NHS from smoking related diseases several times over... In turn this means more jobs for doctors, nurses, hospital porters, administrators and cleaners which in turn further drives the economy!! Yay for pro choice :)

Typically, people smoke because it gives them a feel-good moment. I just think it's bad since the bad side-affects and the fact you need more and more of them to keep your constant high. Get a hobby.

Smoking is not a hobby.

p.s., I LOVE FAST FOOD!
p.p.s, if we didn't have the smoking in the first place, we wouldn't need the health care. And those doctors can still get work anyway.

compain to the school ..in most jurisdictions you're not allowed to smoke on school property

well then dont hang out with them ..I dont hang out with people who do crack cuz that shits disgusting

Considering security guards and course directors smoke out there too, i think it safe to assume that nothing will come of complaining to the school. Instead i'll just complain to helplife2.net.

And Im not about to be rude and unfriendly to someone just because they're addicted to something gross. They're my classmates, and possibly future co-workers, so i need to maintain relations.

I really hope you don't drink soda, that you eat very healthily, that you exercise frequently, that you don't ride in cars, that you have never touched a drop of alcohol in your life, and that you are generally a perfect person that does absolutely nothing remotely self-destructive, because you would have to be to not be a total hypocrite by posting this, not to mention an asshole to boot given the condescending, trollish nature of your original post.

I smoke. I'm well aware of the effects it has on my health. I smoke anyway because I enjoy smoking. Deal with it. Everyone on the planet bar none (except maybe Martha Stewart or those types) engages in some form of mild self-destruction, whether it's smoking cigarettes or risking automobile travel or drinking alcohol or eating junk food or spending too much time at the computer playing video games.

I avoid blowing smoke in nonsmokers' faces when speaking to them, I don't smoke by doorways or anything (unless it's raining and there's cover there), and frankly no-one has anything valid to complain about as far as outdoor smoking goes - even if it smells bad, secondhand smoke doesn't really exist outdoors, the only time it is even a valid health concern is indoors and with prolonged exposure (IE the child of an adult who smokes regularly inside around them).

I cannot stand the condescending, holier-than-thou self-righteous attitude that militant nonsmokers adopt at every opportunity. Let me make decisions about my own goddamn body, even if it causes you to occasionally smell smoke while walking around outside. It's been shown that smokers actually think that smoking cigarettes is MORE damaging to their health than it actually is; we do it anyway, live with it. To quote Bill Hicks... I'd stop smoking if I didn't think I'd become one of you.

ya but you're kinda being two faced

look, people do stupid idiotic shit all the time, they may have idiotic opinions on issues, they may behave idiotically under the right circumstances ..etc ..if I were to judge people based solely on one these things I'd avoid all human contact altogether ..being accepting of other people's differences is what being part of a community is all about. Just avoid the things that really irk you and accept the things that are mildly annoying, you'll be a happier person for it

I (as well as most people) am going through a tough time (like my mother being ill) which causes a fair amount of stress at times, but I don't feel the need to touch a fag to hopefully relieve it. I understand that isn't the case with some people, but what I don't understand is how you can bear to think your lungs look like that, or that you absolutely stink or maybe that in a couple of decades times (or even sooner?) you're gonna think "I wish I didn't start smoking."

As for peer pressure, I'm sure people can resist.

I realise my first post was being like a troll, but I watched a teacher today ask in class "How many of you have smoked/do smoke?" and was saddened to see that half the class (of 14 - 15 year olds) had raised their hands.

I just find it strange that people dont think its just weird. I mean, all those other things are just an excess of normal activities. Eating is normal, so eating too much/junk isnt that much of a stretch. Drinking stuff is normal, so drinking alcoholic beverages isnt much of a stretch either. Neither is spending unusual amounts of time on the computer. But inhaling smoke from a tiny stick?

I've grown up in smoke. My mom has always smoked. My dad has always smoked. My grandpa, grandma, step mom, uncle, they all smoke. So I guess it doesn't bother me as much as people who has lived in non-smoking homes. It still annoys me though. My clothes always smell of tobacco. This is the main reason I live out of the dryer. I just mainly ignore it, the smell, when I'm around people who are smoking. I'll sometimes move away as well.

I dunno, I'm not exactly the type to root for smoke bans, but if they happen, I'm glad; though I sit in the non-smoking sections at restaurants so it doesn't bother me anyway.

tl;dr: i dunno lol

I smoke every now and then, but even so I really think that it's smokers who should be confined to a certain area if they want to smoke. Confined spaces with air extractors only to justify not allowing people to smoke outside those areas, not even in open spaces.

Considering I sometimes go several months without smoking, I wouldn't mind those "smoking areas" :p

yes every smoker knows this ..we just dont need people like to constantly throw it into our faces ....I really dont care how you feel for even a second ..why should I? it's not like you respect me for my choices, why should I do the same for you?

As for peer pressure, I'm sure people can resist.

are you living in a box without any outside contact? this is utterly ridiculous: you're sure? how the hell can you make such a blanket statement for all 6 billion people on this earth?

I've been able to resist most peer pressure.
Don't give a shit. Also, don't want to waste all my money on drugs and the like.

This explains my answer.

I just don't understand:

If you know its going to kill you, then why?

Maybe some day Stern, your kid'll ask you to stop smoking so you dont die before he grows up.

Apparently thats what made my dad quit after 20 years of smoking, and made my mom dramatically cut down.

Smoking differs.
You can smoke some effing L&Ms (I find smoke produced by "typical" cigarettes pretty unpleasant).

But, you can smoke Cohiba or Cuaba Diadema cigars, or a meerschaum pipe with some really good tobacco.

I do the latter two, but no more than once a week or when a particularly cool contract hits, in order to minimize health impact and avoid addiction

Why?

Because of the pleasant taste and smell, which are very remarkable.

I'd smoke weed all the time if I could, but weed's expensive. I don't have the habit of smoking though, I kind of hate the taste it leaves in my mouth and all, but it does feel good

Could you be any more smug?
