Anime Sucks

im not posting to change anybodies mind. (althought that would be a nice side-effect).

i am posting here to "discuss" since this is the discussion forum. "argue" is not the same as "discuss" i dont remember saying that Anime was a "better" choice then anything else, but i did voice 'my opinion' on the matter.
 
In any case, blokes who think anime sucks should stop bothering to yell at people that likes anime about it. Why bother? The anime fans won't start to dislike it just because they do.

I for one like anime because it varies greatly from most american movies. (The action flicks are pretty much the same if you ask me :x)
Ok, go for Pokemon, Digimon and Sailor Moon, I mean that's just terribly monotonously. Go for that.

Anime is just like all other movies and series. There is good and bad anime. If you say anime (as in all anime) sucks, then I could say all american action films sucks, and that I know is not true.

true, i can name a bunch of good american action films like.... die hard 1&2, air force one, independance day, terminator 1&2....3 was.. ok.... uh, predator 1&2 (those were 'action' right?).

but lets not turn this into a movie debate.



does anyone have an opinion about anime (or anime related topics, like movies :p) that they can submit to us in a comphrehensive and understandable manner? and has solid point(s).

Just to make clear, Sailor Moon was an ecchi show before it got mainstream back in the days.... i think (if i remember correctly).

One funny thing though. Most anime studios started out with hentai/ecchi shows and moved on to more serious things. Take CLAMP for example, an all female studio, they now make serious mangas (which turns into animes, like Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits and so on)... but they started out with hentai/ecchi... Pretty cool if you ask me :)

Edit: for those who havent seen/read anything from CLAMP nowadays:

Cardcaptor Sakura is a anime (think its 72 eps and 3 movies) for ~12 year old girls (ive seen it btw :)), And Chobits is a cute (but more ecchi like) love/drama story.
 
I made a thread like this on another forum and got flamed so much, even got a ton of death threats(those mean a lot online). I hate anime, I use to watch some of it, but I can't take it anymore. The stories all seem the same and all the animations are all HORRIBLE and the same. It is just too corny and poorly done for me to watch.

That's fine. Where did I say in my original post that I want Anime fans to die? Looking again...nope didn't say that. I don't want you to drop dead or quit enjoying Anime. If you love it man, more power to ya, keep stickin' it to the man. Guys, I didn't start the topic to try and change anyone's mind. That's silly. I actually don't even think ALL Anime really sucks. But sometimes making an inflammatory statement like that is a good way to get people to share their opinions.

Probably 90% of the Anime I've seen has been subtitled. You're right, it's seriously almost impossible to watch the English dubbed versions (although I thought the English dub on Cowboy Bebop was one of the better attempts yet.) Still, even though I watch the subtitles, much of the writing really is atrocious. My problem isn't that the plots are too complex or its the same thing over and over, its that what comes out of the characters mouth's is generally totally uninteresting/poorly written. Watching Anime over the years, hearing the psuedo philosophical nonsense they spout for no aapparent reason has gotten REALLY annoying.

I've got some complaints about the shitty animation as well, but those are really secondary. You see, I WANT Anime to be good. If some really talented animators could get paired up with an excellent writing team, I think the results could be amazing. My problem is that rarely occurs.

LOL, it's always so obvious when there's CGI in anime. Because CGI is always a smooth 30 fps and drawn stuff is never over 20 :)
This seems to be 100% computer generated, with the exception of background images and skies it seems.
 
I love Pokemon. Does that count as Anime?

You know... thats the point. Its not hand drawn... it _is_ and should be CGI. That the whole point!

Six Three: It is anime, but anime for kids. We (well... cant really say that for sure, but I) dont watch anime for small kids.
 
All I have to say is, compared with animation from the US or the like, Japanese Anime totally kicks ass.
 
Okay, okay, it looks like I'm in the minority here. But don't you guys feel that Anime has SOOOO much unrealized potential? I just feel it could be way better.
 
Our part of the world for them are like Japan for us. They think we're doing some really cool and unique movies/series here, and we (some of us) think they have some cool things and have some unique and different thoughts about movie (series) making. They want more western things and we want more "The land of the rising sun" things.

Whats new and different for us isnt new and different for them, and they want to take our stuff and make it into theirs... aka... not as good anime.

Im not sure what ive just said... but yeah...

Well you know... sometimes they mix in english... which they think is cool... but it sounds really dumb.

I agree, some things/series/movies could be really better.
 
Have any of you seen Gungrave... I had never heard of it until the other day I saw the DVD of the first 4 episodes at Wal-Mart and figured I would see what its all about. Its actually pretty neat... this guy comes back from the dead to avenge his brother and friends from this other dude... he has these huge guns and a casket he carries around full of other heavy weapons. i hear that gungrave is from the creators of trigun, which is one of my favorite shows although i saw the series about 2 years ago i still like it very much, so i'll probably check it out
 
My roommate (In college I am a freshman he is a senior, he has no friends smells, the sterotypical dork/loser) Watches Anime and plays video games all day, He has like 60 freaking anime comics. I am about to kill him literally. ugh.....
I hate anime and anything related to it
 
cowboy bebop is amazing. i can certainly understand why people dislike anime, but if you keep an open mind its possible to find some good stuff among the lame.
 
If you don't like the contrived sci fi stories then watch some of miazaki's (sp?) work. Spirited Away is a really great Alice in Wonderland story. My Neighbour Totoro, also appeals to all ages.
 
Some animes suck but i love Samurai X , Ninja Scroll Robotech Saga and Escaflowne. How bout some hentais?
 
Oh yeah, Steamboy is really cool, although it'not really groundbreaking in any huge way. I saw it in theatres while I was in Japan this summer. It's basically an 1800s future where steam power evolved into the main power source of the world.
 
The only anime I've ever come across that really struck my fancy was the three seasons of Spawn on HBO. I love the style of animation that anime is known for, but many of the storylines in anime are a bit too out-there for me. Spawn mixed the artistic style of anime with the type of storytelling I like. Bought all three seasons on DVD.
 
I also think most anime have stupid stories, but great animation, and the drawing style and quality of movies like Ghost in The Shell is absolutely amazing. But yeah the lines allways seen stupid and the plut really thin or incoherent. But anyways most of them are like HL2, if yiu just look at the story at the surface it may seen stupid, but you can see the story goes much deeper and has a meaning behind it. Now I myself prefer movies that are actually just good and keep you interested, less so that some with a backgoudn meaning. Anyway, if your interested in a good anime, buy yourself a PS or download a good PSX Emu, then play these games: Fear Effect, Fear Effect2: double helix.
