Ummm... you do realize that the GCFs arent back ups, right?glitched_firewal said:the only thing i dont like about steam is that it doubles up all of my installations, requiring twice the hard drive space
Funny... I play VALVe games whenever I want...STEAM sucks! If you want VALVE controlling how and when you play games then you probably love it.
instead of Skynet...STEAM NET!!1!!!1Absinthe said:OH JESUS IF THEY TRACK MY HARDWARE AND GAMING HABITS THEN THEY WILL GAIN THE ABILITY TO EFFECTIVELY CREATE A NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST WORLDWIDE ONCE THE STEAM SUPER COMPUTER HAS GATHERED SUFFICIENT ENOUGH DATA, AND THEN ME AND A GROUP OF RAG-TAG REBELS WILL HAVE TO FIGHT THROUGH THE RUBBLE AND UPLOAD THE COMPUTER VIRUS TO SKYNET GAK GAK GAK GAK
Oh wait, why would I care?

There is no doubling up. Your "Half-Life 2" folder is only ~200MB at the most. While the GCFs for HL2 are like 3gigs.
Dont worry, ur not loosing any hard drive space.

You do realize that any developer has the power to program into their games a shut down sequence that they could control.
Your a fool if you think Steam controlls how or when u play.
Thats because VALVe didnt make Blue Shift, GearBox did.glitched_firewal said:yah, but some of my old opposing force and blue shift files are still in the Sierra folder, and steam wont let me delete them for some reason...
by the way, why isnt Blue Shift part of Steam?
Yeah, GearBox also made Op Force.glitched_firewal said:I thought someone else made opposing force too

John’s Reply: No you don't, when you open the game and it starts automatically updating you are not playing you are waiting on an update.

John’s Reply: My point exactly

John’s Reply: ”I wonder why America spends so much money on law enforcement to catch speeders? Why not just computer control all cars speed? Because that would be taking away our freedom of choice.
This is what Valve is trying to do with STEAM. I bought the Single player version from the Target. I would like to have a choice and be able to turn off the automatic updates. I do not have that choice. It was taken away by Valve. That’s not a big deal but what is next? What happens if every game you buy you have to auto update or perform whatever actions the developers come up with.
I do not know about you but I like freedom of Choice and do not want Valve or any other company taking that away for whatever reason.
Are you saying you dont like updates?John’s Reply: No you don't, when you open the game and it starts automatically updating you are not playing you are waiting on an update.
You think we have freedom of choice? hehee, thats hillarious.I wonder why America spends so much money on law enforcement to catch speeders? Why not just computer control all cars speed? Because that would be taking away our freedom of choice.

yes...i'd post more, but VALVe is telling me i have to play more Counter-Strike.johnadaniels said:STEAM sucks! If you want VALVE controlling how and when you play games then you probably love it.

If you spend all your time splashing around in the shallow end of the gene pool, you're going to get laughed at.

Terror? More like hilarity.Danimal said:Shoudn't this thread be closed/deleted or something by now? BigBot's reign of terror is over now...
Go to the folder. Click on it. Right click, click delete. There you go.Yah, but some of my old opposing force, cs 1.5, and cs:cz are still in the Sierra/valve folder,
I agree with this guy. Why are we all being subject to ads when we already paied $50 for the game,I agree. Why are we being subjected to advertisments when we've already paid $50 for the game? Steam is the equivalent of Gator
bigbot said:ohhh, you can turn off updates... well thats a start.. but it doesnt solve the problem that its still running... i get nervous with anything shady running. I don't have viruscan running constantly, only when i scan... i dont have E-GATOR freaking wallet or Kazaa... and I don't plan on downloading this steam anytime soon
bigbot said:I'm saddened that you guys cannot see past your optimistic "Valve Rocks" attitudes... maybe you enjoy having a program running in the background downloading updates at will, but those are those of us who enjoy control over things. I hate windows updates and have it disabled. Yet I cannot disable steam... all I can do is enable some "offline" mode. I've seen the process my friend went through after buying it.. completely ridiculous...
It's a freaking game, not a $10,000 video processing program... this level of security and privacy breaching is not required.
