ARMA 2 on Steam June 26th

I'm probably going to be getting this in a few hours from now. The demo is downloading right now, and unless it actually convinces me not to, then im getting it. Who else here actually has the full version already?

Been playing with the editor all afternoon. Great fun. Setting up a battle and watchting as a civilian is fun, but taking part as a commander, sending your attack helos to strafe villages and letting tanks doing the mopping up is even more awesome. It is almost like a RTS game, tactics wise.

Tried setting up ambient combat module in the editor?:)

It's pretty awesome, seeing as it dynamically generates units around you, so just be a civilian, and put it to you, and you get to see an awesome dynamically generated battle, the 'AI' itself spawns in vehicles, choppers, airplanes etc etc for both sides and they fight it out, it's bloody amazing!

Man, **** this game. I died so many times because I couldnt see anyone anywhere. I was playing that first mission and i got shot from someone who had to have been a mile or so away and died, then an apc from out of nowhere killed me, despite me looking around everywhere for it. I could barely get out of that first little grouping of houses without dying.

Is this in the demo as well? Haven't tried that out yet.

How the hell do you copy and paste in the editor? I remember this was pretty easy in OFP.

Also, in the demo, the ambient combat module doesn't seem to do anything.

Ctrl+C to copy, ctrl+V to pase. Just like the windows shortcut.

That does sound awesome. How exactly do I set that up in the editor? I don't remember seeing it anywhere.

anybody know how to fix this shit where it would detect how much vram I have?
I have a gtx260 it it only says I have "normal" video memory and the textures are ****ed up.

thanks in advance...

For me, the detection of video memory was correct, but I had no textures either. Setting the shortcut target to the following fixed that for me:

"C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2 Demo\ArmA2Demo.exe" -winxp

If that's not it, you could try setting the amount of VRAM manually in Arma2Demo.cfg in the folder C:\Users\<User>\Documents\ArmA 2 Demo. For some reason, mine is set to

localVRAM=2133852161;
nonlocalVRAM=2147483647;

Don't know why, it was at the correct amount for me before (1073741824 bytes). But this setting apparently works for me, so you could setting it to this.

Man, I want this game. The limited set of units and possibilities in the demo i starting to irritate me. I want proper airplanes, more armor and the whole map to f*** around with!

Can I ask how well my system would perform?

E8400
4GB ddr2
8800gts 640

The guy with the slow motion video has similar specs except for a better video card.

I have the same video card as you and I have all the settings on high.

You can see my specs in my sig. I run it on normal at 1280x1024. Graphically it doesn't change that much from high to normal so I went with the better performance. It still looks amazing though.

From reading the official forums I'd say you can probably run it at 1024x768 with all settings on High, and still get a stable 30 FPS.

But, as has been stated many times, the game is still poorly optimized, and very demanding.

Does anyone know how to toggle the UI? Want to make some screenshots.

Nooo, the demo just crashed on me and it doesn't allow you to save editor maps :(

Had a pretty cool one, although really, it was just 100 men on either side of a town with a waypoint to the other side. Still, epic combat ensued.

Cars are surprisingly fun units, don't have such a huge impact on the course of battle like a tank does, but they still pack some fun firepower. Like the Humvee with the grenade launcher on it, or the OPFOR car with a recoilless rifle on it. So in the end I had 9 infantry squads on either side with two cars per squad :p

The game is most fun in night missions, tracer rounds look awesome. Although I would've liked if rifles also used tracer rounds, but I don't know if that's realistic.

Really loving the game right now.

Ive been trying the demo so far and its bringing me back fond memories I had with operation flashpoint before. I forgotten what its like to be firing at enemy infantry over hills and near urban towns, even I dont recall doing something like this in bf2. I'm really enjoying it, but its nearly enough to convince me to upgrade my computer again. The highest settings I know would make the game look gorgeous as hell. And as far as the bugs, I havent seen anything too annoying yet. But Im really used to buggy games since I immensely enjoyed the Hidden and Dangerous series in the day.

I'm on the 3rd/4th mission where I need to command my squad through some oil refinery or something and I need to kill a sniper. Do I need to tell them to fire on people or what? I had my marksman high up and he didn't do a damn thing.

Please use spoilers when discussing specific missions like you did now.

It kinda ruins it to know "Oh at that mission there'll be snipers and shit"..:\

There's a tutorial on commanding troops. I found it pretty helpful. Anyways you just have to select the marksman, hold space and point towards the target.

Selecting one or more units and right-clicking the target works as well.

<3 Steam. Thought Arma2 didn't release until tomorrow but I saw it was available and an hour later, it's on my PC.

The convention for discussing missions should go like this:

Mission 13: 'The Future Is Orange'

Before you get into the next fight you need to make sure you've talked to Grigori so that he can bless your spray can, which should be as full as can be. Enter through the big doors. Immediately a biozeminade will come out of the painting above the fireplace and two more will be coming down the staircase. Avoid the pouncing attack of the first and don't get backed into corners, because in this small space if they catch you your finished. You can lure them to jump into the fireplace, which weakens them and allows you to spray paint at them, but with three fighting you at once it's easy to get overwhelmed. Your best policy, at least at first, is to try and keep them on the ground floor then get to high ground, using the furniture to block them and trap them. Cans of paint will explode when thrown into the fire, so if the 'nades get close to the fireplace, let them have it.

A general warning to everyone, according to a lot of threads on the official forums, the Steam versio seems to have a lot of compatability issues with many mods.

Hence why it's better to buy retail than Steam in this case.

^^ I'm sure by the time you get bored of the campain and start playing mods they will have released some patches.

--------

I grabbed the demo off steam lastnight and it was pretty damn fun, buggy as crap just like flash point and played a lot better then arma.

I was just wondering wtf was going on with the bluryness, after about 20m distance everyhing is just a blur, this is with max graphics settings and a high widescreen resolution :(

Anyrate, the full version is now downloading :)

ALL MOVE TO HARD DRIVE, QUICKLY!

FYI there are plenty of mods for ARMA1 too that don't work with ARMA Steam, so it's not something that will be magically fixed by patches.

So basically the Steam version is gimped, amongst other things you will not get access to community beta patches for ARMA2.

Dammit!

Anyway I wonder why I got better performance in the demo version? I'm getting low FPS in the full version =\

What viewdistance do you have set?

Remember the demo only contains small areas, whereas the full version ciontains full areas, so higher viewdistance is a lot more intensive in full version than in demo version.

Cool, hopfly full version will look better then.

I'm not really to fussed about mods tho, I lived without them on flashpoint :)

Super important question tho, Do you still get a peddle bike? Some of my most prized maps had me, on a bike, at the top of a reallllly big hill. 3rd person mod! zoooooom!

Might pick it up if it ever gets a sale on. Sounds good.

Its weird because it looks like crap (not that i mind) so it seems weird that its such a struggle to run :p

Also, shooting cows is fun =D

Err what? Why would you need a third-person mod? OFP, OFPElite, ARMA and ARMA2 all support third and first person without any mods..
