Attention out of range

Hi All,

I just changed my video settings and got this message:

Attention out of range
H:74.9KHz V:74.8Hz

I did love playing HL2, but I am now a little annoyed that it doesn't have a config programme (unlike FarCry,UT2004 etc) to change back to original settings.

I am now unable to play this game at all, through me being 'greedy' with my resolution & this should not be the case.

My spec:
2.8ghz proc
768 ram
fx5950 ultra

Does anyone know If I will have uninstall? Or how I might get into where I was & change it back without my monitor giving this message?

I am no expert, just a gamer!

hmm make sure your monitor is plugged in completly, and can you change back at all to the original?

My monitor is plugged in properly.

As I said in the message, I can't go back to the original settings because I get the Out of range message, and HL2 doesn't have a config programme, like UT, FarCry etc!!

So I don't how to get back to playing without uninstalling!

This is where I start to slang Valve off, but I am not going to start!

I don't think this is a Valve problem, sounds like you have to high of a resolution setting for your monitor in HL2, or some problem with two high of a refresh rate and a higher resolution.

Have you any idea how I might be able to play HL2 again though?

If I can't change the settings back, I will always have this message when I try!!!!!!!!!!!

I am going to write a stinker to Valve, because if they'd included a config programme, I wouldn't have even joined this forum, cos I could change it back through that.

Definately a refresh rate problem, at your current resolution your monitor can't handle the 75hz refresh rate you've set.
Go into display properties, monitor settings and change it to a lower refresh rate, change your resolution too, back to say 1024*768 @70hz.
There may be a solution with this..

Try this....
go to
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\User\Half-Life 2\bin

and remove file .... vtex.dll and then start game .... should be back to default settings....

Unfortunately that didn't work and I am still stuck with this.

I think I will have to reinstall the game, I don't thank VALVe for this as I was already well into the game!

removed vtex.dll, but when you run the game that file is recreated! So I cannot get back to default.

I know usually when something screws up HL2\Cs:S will go back to its default settings.
Go to the Forceware panal and change your refresh rate down to like 60.
I think nvidia thing is called forceware.

There is a programming code for it. Like when you right click on the game and then go to properties then launch options, you are able to type something in tehre to make it come out as a specific screen setting like 800x600, 1280x1080, etc. I just can't remember it.. Sorry..

I'm sure there used to be a way to force a game to start at a certain res, I think you had to right click on your hl2 short cut, select properties and where it says.. "C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 220 add a space, then try both of these 2 options to force resolution and refresh rate.

-width [pixels] -height [pixels]: Using these two commands you can set a custom resolution in Pixel Width x Pixel Height (e.g. -width 640 –height 480 starts HL2 with 640x480 resolution). Make sure you choose a resolution supported by your monitor and with the correct ratio of width to height (usually 4:3).

refresh [Hz]: Specifies the refresh rate the game will use upon loading. This is normally not required as your system should already use the optimal refresh rate at your chosen resolution. However if this is not the case you can force it to a specific refresh rate (e.g. -refresh 85). Make absolutely certain that the rate you are trying to apply does not exceed your monitor's capabilities otherwise you may damage your monitor - especially if you change resolutions and forget to change this option.


That should fix it, if not a re-install is on the cards for you.
Rememebr to put the lines in the shortcut that you use to open HL2 or CS, to be on the safe side put the lines in all three, get into HL2 or CS, set the resolution and when you come outta the games, delete the lines from the shortcuts.
