Babylon 5

I loved the episode with Green vs Purple Draazi. Awesome.

There's a big diference between B5 and Farscape. B5 is serious, Farscape isn't...

And thanks for clearing that up Ejit.

... Have you SEEN both shows? Babylon 5 has plenty of episodes and scenes that aren't at all serious and Farscape has a lot lot lot of episodes, especially in the last two seasons, that are quite serious. It's generally an admittedly campy show, but it's still beyond fantastic.

... Have you SEEN both shows?

Yes I have and I still stand by what I said. Sure there are gags and scenes that aren't serious, but overall B5 is way more serious than Farscape... With Farscape you never know is it serious, is it a parody, is it a full blown weird comedy, the episodes vary in that respect...

I tried to get into Farscape but it's really too out there for me.
Can't take anyone seriously with how ridiculous they look.

Too much Farscape hate in this thread... I love that show ;(

On-topic: Yes B5 is very good, well worth checking out. Although the first season does suck and the show can be very cheesy at times. But if you can get past that the show has so many great qualities and moments.

I slightly enjoyed Farscape. Not a whole lot, but what I saw gave me chuckles.

my recommendation: watch it with a friend. makes the show even more special. Also I can see where Mass Effect stole a lot of ideas from: Babylon 5!

I officially retract everything I said about Farscape, it's really an awesome show.
Great to kick back and relax while watching it.

Anyways, I'm about halfway through Season 3 of B5 and sweet Christ, this has to have been some of the most intense scifi television I've seen in quite some time.
Right up there with there with BSG, even moreso actually.

I'm highly considering dishing out $150+ for the entire series and movies, I can't stand waiting several days at a time for the 2 DVDs to come in the mail. D:
I might even buy the books, if they're worth getting that is.
The series itself plays out like a novel so I'd assume the books are great.

Just watched some of Season 4 (Into the Fire, Falling Toward Apotheosis, Whatever Happened to Mr. Garibaldi? etc.). I <3 <3 this show so much. I miss it being on television. So many excellent characters and wonderful storytelling. The books are an excellent read as well - I highly recommend them.
Funny to watch it now because when it first was showing I remember the effects being said as cutting edge - the effects are very dated now.

I actually think the effects are still fantastic even today.
Season 1 had the worst effects, the improved in 2, and in 3 atm... they're fantastic.

Oh absolutely - it's just interesting to see how far sfx have come over the last decade.

I'm seriously considering sitting down and watching all the seasons I have (1, 4, & 5) right now. Dammit I wish I had seasons 2 & 3 too.

2 and 3 are the best as well, go get em!

Great Maker!

I want that box set.

omg yes. I knew you'd like it if you gave it another shot. So much of the character work on it is fantastic.

I find that B5 beats the shit out of BSG and most other scifi shows because there's an overall arc with a lot of thought put into foreshadowing. You can go back after you finish the series and pick up stuff in even the first few episodes of Season 1 that play a role later.

It's really too bad that Season 5 sucked, and with the deaths of a few of the actors any possibility for a revival has gone out the window. That said, Season 3 and 4 are both fantastic, so definitely be sure to enjoy them.

Yeah, this is the ONLY series that I own all of on DVD (And the movies as well, though they aren't nearly as good). I've got a couple of the books based around Centauri Prime after the show's ending, but I haven't actually read them yet.

I actually think the effects are still fantastic even today.

Season 1 is really pretty garbage compared to the rest, but it sets up some necessary things. It's hard getting people into the show, I find simply because Sinclair takes so much getting used to, and then he's suddenly gone.

Sinclair was alright but it feels like Sheridan is essentially the same character, war vet with a troubled past.
Only thing I don't like about Sheridan is his inability to truly convey his emotions, he's a lousy actor. :p
But, he does the job and is fairly badass.

I can't wait to see how the
Earth secession plays out, the battle that just took place was... incredible. I got goosebumps when Delenn came in with the Minbari warships and scared away the Earthforce ships.
Definitely going to be watching Season 3 again.
Also, damn simonjedi, that's a slick looking box.
We get this pathetic looking thing.

But, it's pretty cheap for an entire set... so no complaints there.
Going to be getting this later on, convenient collection of all of the movies.

Oh and as we discovered in the TF2 forum, Medic's voiceactor is that gimp Byron, the teep from season 5.

I still can't place my finger on who he is in the show. I guess it's been longer than I thought D:

Absolutely. One of my favorite shows - I always end up laughing when Rygel does something retarded; it's hard to say which character was my favorite (maybe a tie between Zhaan & Aeryn).

I also agree. B5 blows BSG out of the water with foreshadowing; also maybe it's just me, but did it always seem that in BSG when the characters were given a choice, they ALWAYS picked the worst and/or hardest option available imo?

Okay, the 2 parter War without End, gave me a huge god damned headache.
God damn time travel, I was hoping that B4 situation was a one time deal. :x They expanded upon it and turned it into a bowl of spaghetti for me. Sinclaire is apparently the Minbari deity Valen? What the hell? He snuck into Delenn's room and did that transformation ordeal without anyone realizing? What the **** did any of this accomplish? Apparently it already happened before they even did any of this so why were they doing it again?! GAH!

Long hair pretty boy leader of the telepaths.

In B5 time is circular, not linear

So, that means... it's an endless cycle that is ultimately destined to repeat itself?
I'm not sure I fully grasp their idea of time.

Lucid I think you pretty much answer your own question

So, that means... it's an endless cycle that is ultimately destined to repeat itself?

Well, I don't know about it like that. Think of it like this.

Most time travel says that time is a straight line. You go from A - B.

In, Back to the Future, they went from B back to A, and by changing things (Marty's mother falling in love with him instead of his father) they were basically making it so that B would no longer exist, and therefore they would no longer exist.

You know it's kind of like, if I buy a time machine and use it to go back to tomorrow to stop me from buying a time machine, time sort of resets to that new point, because me buying the time machine and going back in time with it no longer happened.

In Babylon 5, time is presented more as having a degree of... well, I guess 'fate' is the right word. I'm not sure you're far enough to see everything that has happened, but there are dreams people have that come true, there are things people say about the future that come true. The show doesn't really pursue the idea of free will, and changing the future much.

But what we see is this. The Minbari have a prophet who is "Minbari, but not born Minbari". He establishes many of their customs and laws and etc. Now, because it happened in the past, events HAVE to happen at some point in the present to ensure that it happened. Sinclair, by way of his time on Minbar as the Ambassador, and his communication (etc) with the Vorlons finds that he is supposed to be Valen. So he steals Babylon 4 and takes it back in time.

You could see it as being there are some plot holes. Delenn uses the crystallise thing that she gets from Minbar to become partially human. Sinclair uses the same thing to become Minbari. It is available to Delenn because he BROUGHT IT BACK with him. So it's kind of like he takes it from the present and brings it back into the past so that it is available in the present.

Also if Babylon 4 is in the past what the hell happens to it? I think this was actually explained (destroyed in war?) but I forget.

It's kind of complicated, but I think the way it is best thought of is that the past cannot be changed. If it happened already, events will occur that will cause it to happen.

To some degree, the future seems to be loosely written, but the specifics as to how and why are not always accurate. AND it is possible to deviate from the norm. Something happens to Centauri Prime. Londo is told on multiple occasions that it is within his power to stop it or change it.

It seems at times almost like the future is established because so much of it is based on people, and their personalities. Londo is arrogant and wasn't going to change what he was doing, because he thought he was right, and events unfold the way it was predicted.

Holy shit, Yorick.
That pretty much clears it up.

<3

Good! <3

It's pretty goddamn convoluted at times. But it makes sense once you get through the entire thing, and then go BACK.
I usually watch the show start-to-finish once a year. I always end up picking up on new things. :)

It's actually getting to be that time. I think I'll do it again over the coming weeks, once I wrap up Star Trek TNG.

Yeah, I'm gonna definitely rewatch the series again at some point.
Glad to see that Season 1 wasn't a complete waste of time to watch, even though it sure felt like it.

First half of season 1 was pretty meh, it bordered on campyness (remember the one with the motorbike *shudders*)

Holy shit, Season 4 was awesome.
Starting Season 5, first episode was interesting... I'm seeing the beginnings of the Telepath War that's been foreshadowed in a few episodes.

Seasons 3 and 4 are both just fantastic. Season 5 is really lacking, though. I'll wait to discuss it with you until you watch it though so as not to spoil anything.

Season 5 is only lacking because he thought it would end in season 4 so had to rush the earth stuff.

I'm 2 episodes from finishing season 4.

I really didn't see much evidence of him rushing the season.

Although, I was a little surprised that the
Drakh were taken care of so quickly and that the Minbari civil war ended so fast.

Planning on watching it after I'm done watching Season 5, don't want to spoil anything.
Since, that's supposed to be a transitional movie that sets up Crusade.

nothing major is spoiled, its set in the gap between the last 2 episodes so if you want to watch it chronologically then "objects at rest" > call to arms/crusade > sleeping in light

Season 5 needed Ivanova and more Garibaldi. Coulda had more Londo interaction too.
