Babylon 5

J. Michael Straczynski Didn't write the majority of the 5th season if I remember? Hence why it was so Meh?

a) He wrote the majority of the show.
b) He's a fantastic writer.
c) The 5th season was meh because it wasn't supposed to happen, and the remaining plots ends to tie up had more than a season each.

I found Season 5 to be more meh for me mainly because you just didn't see as much of the characters we had grown too love in this season (either they were gone or dead or changed in some way) and you had a lot of new characters coming into the woodwork that were a lot different than what we were used to; the final episode was good for me though
since the show did bring back a lot of those original characters, and the destruction of B5 was very moving for me.

- The telepath war starts and then doesn't go anywhere.
- The Drakh are referenced a few times but don't go anywhere big until A Call to Arms.
- Which itself starts another entire arc that we never see go anywhere.
- But the biggest thing that bummed me out is that we never see all of what happens on Centauri Prime.

I said 5th season, not the whole show, he did a fantastic job with season 3 and 4, but he didn't write as much for the 5th season as I remember, I think he wrote the last half of season 5 but the first half was with a few other writers.

Good on him with sticking with his baby thought, its rare to see such commitment in TV shows.

Oh, whoops, I'm sorry, I thought you said it was meh because he wrote the majority of it.

Just watched The Gathering and thought it was awful. :(
It was boring and since Ivanova and Franklin weren't in it, it felt empty as their placeholder characters were... very bland and emotionless.

The story of it was interesting though, assassination attempt on Kosh.
Also, Jesus Christ... the music they used was god awful... sounded like 80s rock instead of the spacey sounds that the current composer made.

Delenn and G'Kar's makeup was horrifyingly bad as well, Delenn's moreso... she looked like a god damn goblin.

Going to be watching In the Beginning in a few hours.

I've never actually seen most of The Gathering. The pilot just felt too different from the rest of the show and I found myself really unable to sit through it.

I also found In The Beginning to be pretty worthless, since 90% of that movie is stuff you already know from watching the show. You just get to actually see it all happen.

Thirdspace is fantastic. River of Souls and Call to Arms are both decent.

I heard somewhere that Thirdspace is based on Cthulhu Mythos.

I can't really speak to that aspect. I dislike Lovecraft's writing style so much that I've never read all that much on Cthulhu. It wouldn't really surprise me, though.

In the Beginning was great, imo.
Really went into the nitty gritty of the war.
But, yeah... I agree that it's something that wasn't entirely necessary, it was definitely entertaining though.
Really great moments and a few things that I never realized until now.

Going to check out Thirdspace in a little bit then it's back to watching Season 5 since the rest of the movies seem to be all post-S5.

Lando's speech on "In the Beginning" was possible the best moment of the movie.

Thirdspace was intense, great stuff.
Nice to see that even the high and mighty Vorlons f*cked up every now and then. :p

Ok, so because of this thread, I decided to give the show a watch. I got 15 seconds into the first episode and saw this:

So thats the end of that.

Wow, you're pretty shallow.
You can't handle something different? :|

That's a Centauri, they were the first race that Earth made first contact with.
They're pretty cool and one of the main characters, Londo Mollari, is probably one of the best characters ever conceived of in sci-fi television.

If you say Thirdspace was terrible, then which was the best B5 movie? Cause this one was easily the best one I've seen thus far.
The music was amazing, the story was intriguing, the CGI was topnotch, hell... even the acting was much improved.
Although, I did find it odd how such a major event got shrugged off so quickly after they
nuked it.

I could've easily seen this last several episodes and become a major arc in the B5 story.

I cannot forgive stupid hair. I can handle different. I can handle eccentric and weird. But I can't handle stupid. Whoever thought that hair was a even remotely decent artistic choice for their race needs to walk off a cliff.

I mean, I think I would have preferred them to have helicopter hair, because at least then they couldnt have possibly been taking themselves seriously.

"Stupid" hair implies that it looks different/goofy for no reason.
The reason the Centauri have their hair like they do is to show social status (the larger your hair, the richer and/or more powerful you are).

As is the fact that humans have more gold or bigger houses to show how rich they are is stupid as well?

Oh well; you are entitled to your opinion.

Ohright.

I could've easily seen this last several episodes and become a major arc in the B5 story.

The way that Lyta at the end said "One mistake of many, so many" or whatever made me think that it was going to have a bigger impact, not necessarily with these creatures directly, but with the idea of the Vorlon's having multiple ****-ups. Still, the idea of the old races, er, "Leaving things behind" as it were does become a major arc, so rest assured that there's a lot more to come.

I'm glad.
The telepath business is getting pretty interesting but, I was hoping there was going to be atleast one more alien conflict. :D

The telepath business is mostly rubbish. Byron is such a terrible character. Bester has always been a fantastic character, though.

Really? :(
Does it really never progress much aside from being used for covert ops?

Byron seems alright atm, I don't like how he's basically your generic minority group leader though and the whole reeling Lyta in ordeal was pretty much a given.
I don't see why she chose to go with them even after all the appreciation she got for her work, unappreciative bitch. :frown:

Much like Marcus, I found Byron to be kind of a walking cliche. It's an incredibly sharp contrast to how deep most of the characters are.

Wow, powerful ending to the series.
I cried.

This season really wasn't that bad, I do agree that Byron was torture to listen to and see... I cheered when he was killed.
Everything after he dies was great, imo.

Totally forgot to watch the other movies though, going to be checking them out later.
Also going to rent Crusade to see what that's all about.

I agree. Bester was by far one of my most favorite characters; such a complex and interesting scumbag.

I think the very last episode of Season 5 is the only thing that happens after those two movies. They're still worth checking out.

G'Kar and Londo were always high on my list of favourites.

Hell yes, I love G'Kar and Londo, all of the shit that they went through... and in the end they become the best of pals.
I love all of the characters really, even Lochley started to grow on me but by the time she actually got decent screen time the show was over! :(

The G'Kar/Londo relationship was the best thing about the show.

I think the very last episode of Season 5 is the only thing that happens after those two movies. They're still worth checking out.

Crusade is set after A Call to Arms, the other movies are set before the Season 5 penultimate iirc.

Is Crusade worth watching? I mean, it got cancelled after 13 episodes so I'm not sure.
