Best Old Games

Eh, it's not English. And Google Translator doesn't help D:

Edit: Attempted to find my way around. "Panzer General" sounds and looks interesting. I like WW2, and I like hex.

I wouldn't be so sure. These games seem to be already hacked to play on Windows XP - or at least the one I downloaded worked perfectly (*hugs mutley* yaarrrr matey), and this game is from the 1980's.

I just downloaded Dungeon Master (under RPG's) and clicked install, then clicked play. Unfortunately the sound didn't work right off the bat, but I think I could use onboard sound and/or edit the config to make it work.

Unfortunately Dungeon Master II (where I got my avatar) setup doesn't work, so I can't play that. But thats OK, I already have this game installed with DOSBOX, with sound. So, you will need Dosbox for some of these games (download it from main page there)

I'm not sure what this sites rules is on abandonware, seeing as it's not in any way legal unless they've givent he direct permission from the creators'emselves.
Just thought I'd point that out, anyway, HOTU is definitely the best, which probably also is why it's one of the most popular abandonware sites(Or atleast 'was' until they lost their .org domain.:p

While you're there, if you like RPGs, check out Darklands, by Microprose, it's a great deep open-ended RPG with awsome character generation in Medieval Germany, plenty of good old flight sims on there too.

Oh, and if you like 'tactical' turn-based strategy games(Think Silent Storm), you have to check out X-Com ; )

theyre effectively legal, just technically not.. i dont think its a problem.
oh and i already linked to the new hotu address in this thread..

I never said you didn't I just stated that HOTU probably was more popular when it had the .org, because I've spoken to quite a few people who simply think HOTU died and didn't hear that it got the .info adress.. That's all I meant mate.:)

Well, you actually have to buy Doom and Doom 2 from there, so it seems legit. iD Software still sells these as a collectors game, while some the others games on this site probably haven't been sold for 10 or 20 years.

The only ones I downloaded were games that I still own for my Atari ST, but it's cool to not have to have a whole separate computer hooked up just for those games.

My brother is still pissed (20 years later) that I copied over tons of his old floppy discs with my Dungeon Master save game files. ;(

Anyway HIGHLY recommend this game. I'm going to do an epic game in the vien of Dungeon Master using Oblivion engine ASAP.

It has awesome traps and puzzles. This was the first ever real-time RPG using a mouse. And Gargantou, you need to eat and drink every day to survive. :naughty:

oh i get ya now.

VirusType2, I'd assume it's only that way with Doom because they still sell it, but even if an old game isn't still sold, it doesn't become legal for you to download it without written permission from the direct copyright owner of the game. HOTU basically only removes/changes games if they're asked directly by the copyright holders(Such as they had to remove their Warhammer 40k Space Hulk games because Games Workshop 'requested' it).

The ESA also are quite active with lawsuits on sites that has 'illegal'(abandonware without written permission) downloads of games belonging to its members, they've managed to shut down quite a few abandonware sites entirely over the years.

Here's some of the more major members of the ESA, Activision, Atari, Buena Vista Games, Capcom, Crave Entertainment, Eidos Interactive, Electronic Arts, Her Interactive, id Software, Konami, LucasArts, Microsoft Corporation, Midway Games, Namco, Nintendo, NovaLogic, SEGA, Sony Computer Entertainment, Square Enix, Take Two Interactive, THQ, Ubisoft, Vivendi Universal Games, Warner Bros. Interactive, and Wild Tangent.

Wild Tangent makes games? I thought they only made spyware.

Where's Destruction Derby? D: The most inspiring game I played when I was young. I have no toycars left.

Oh hellyes I'm playing supaplex again :D I got to level 93 like 6 years ago, on a 486. I tried it again later on winXP but it didn't run like before (too slow or shaky). Now I use dosbox and it runs like a charm. Dosbox rules.

EDIT: Awww FFS, it doesn't save profiles D: I got to lvl 12 in one sitting and now I lost it D:²

Updated link in main post to do english, thnaks Virustype2. :)

I played Worms for a few hours, lol. God I love that game.

I have an ol' copy of Worms World Party around here somewhere :D

Haha, anyone remember "Home Alone" the game? Just seen it, damn, that brought back forgotten memories. :D Syndicate was a great game to! They brought one out for PS1 also.

Holy, they have Theme Hospital to! :D

Holy shit this is the same game I remember! :D About 20 years ago when I was visiting my Dad, we were at the mall and he gave me $5.00, and told me to go crazy, but that was the only game in that arcade that I liked, in one of my first and best experiences in an Arcade. That game was fun! This older guy there taught me how to ram backwards into the other cars to preserve my engine/radiator.

That was so much fun. I didn't realize there was ever a PC version. It's so old! I'll have to look and see if I can find this game later. Unless you guys have seen where to get it?

haha, the original destruction derby on pc was sooo fun.

yup mutley, theme hospital and syndicate were so good.. the original theme park, so awesome.

gosh, i <3 so many old games, i don't know where to start.

monkey island 1 & 2 -- soo funny.
constructor -- funny, fun and just plain awesome.
jungle/desert/urban strike -- just plain, good natured killing fun, i have jungle strike on sega genesis and it works. ^____^
hocus pocus -- heh, fun game.
worms -- the first one.. the cut scenes and so on are so good.
raptor -- one of the first games i ever bought for pc, spent alot of time on it.

i could go on forever, so many awesome old ones.

Oh, I'm talking about a really old destruction derby arcade game. You guys are talking about that Psycnosis game? I had Psycnosis' destruction derby 2. That was a great game. Very hard, but beatable.

They don't have Battletoads so this site automatically forfits any chance of being worthwhile.

I thought DD2 sucked compared to the original.

No, it's protected by the ESA which is why HOTU links to a site where you can buy it, so linking it here is technically closer to warez than abandonware :p
It's a hard line to draw though, as stated.

Redline Racer.. or something? I had the demo of that.. haha, it was awesome!

And Carmageddon! Destruction Derby! Argh I want those games again damnit :D so much fun
hmm, i think that was it ! though i'm not 100% sure. :x

i don't think we ever had the full version though, we just played the demo. ;)

i remember going to a friends house and having like 6 of us huddled around a single pc playing scorched earth.

or playing 2 player mechwarrior on snes, one person controlled the legs and the other the top half.

i want some of these old games so bad.. might go out and try and find some.

Operation Flashpoint, Deus Ex 1 (a game crafted by god himself its so good), Final Fantasy 7, Breath of Fire 3, Wild Arms 1...amaaazing games.

Crusader, no remorse
Crusader, no regret
can't believe i forgot those 2.

also, little big adventure (especially #2) and magic carpet (what beats shooting orbs into the ground to build 'castless' and fighting dragons ?).

LBA was bloody awesome! I played 1 and 2. The story was amazing. It was fantastic. Got 2nd one on PC, retail copy. Sold 1st one which was for PS1.

I am trying Blood, but none of the sound card options will take. The sound won't work, and it only works in very low rez. What's up with that? It seems like it could be fun.

Should I try it using Dosbox?

Anyone get sound working at least?

Blood is one of the greatest damn FPSs ever made.

There is a tutorial on getting Blood to work. Google it.

Yar http://buildxp.deathmask.net/

It worked for me.
