Board Games

I threw a bit of a party this weekend and whipped out Risk with some friends and had a blast playing. We also got some Bananagrams and Zombie Fluxx going on, which were great fun, and now my attention has been perked, and I think we're going to make this a weekly(ish) thing.

Shadows over Camelot looked interesting, and I feel like it might be a more simple game (as far as one featuring figures) that might lead us into something more like Heroscape or even Dungeons and Dragons though I've heard the latter requires a lot of time investment.

So, yeah, I want some good party / board game suggestions.

Dominion - Really easy to learn. even for people who have never played any board games (well it's a card game). Idea of the game is to build your own deck. Kind of like in Magic the Gathering, but you buy your cards within the game and your deck grows while you play the same deck. Oh and even chicks like to play this game, as the theme is not too nerdy.

Thunderstone - Same idea as in Dominion, but has a strong fantasy theme plus dungeons and fighthing monsters.

Warhammer: Chaos in the Old World - Another board game thats quick to learn and fun. Although you really need 4 players (maximum amount) for this. The game is rubish with 3. You play as the one of the four gods in Warhammer universe and try to conquer the world. Distract other players, be a complete dick that is the theme of this game.

Pandemic - 4-player co-op game. You play against the game, theres no lonewolfs in this one. Either everyone wins or no one wins. Games idea is based on a diseases, you have to cure all of them. This game is frigging hard to win.

Race for the Galaxy - Space themed card game. First I'm going to say that this game is REALLY hard to learn. You need to learn like 10^6 different symbols which most of the time, make no sense. So before you judge the game play like 5-6 games.

Carcassonne - Tile based game. Idea is to build a country, every one places tiles on the same board and scores for cities etc. Easy to learn, fast to set up and cheap.

Those are some of the games I have and we play often.

I always hear good things about Settlers of Catan, but never pick it up. Been meaning to though.

Settlers of Catan, Carcassone for low-time wasting ones.. (1-3 hours is short in board game terms).

Twilight Imperium or RPGs for long-time wasting (hours over multiple weekends).

Dominion is good, BSG is good, but I don't like Race for the Galaxy. One other good ones is Munchkin.

I played a lot of Descent two years ago, basically a simpler kind of D&D. There was also a card game where you drew what alien race you are, you then get ships and attack other players, can't remember the name but it was a lot of fun.

If you've never played Settlers of Catan, you can suck on a giant flaccid penis.

Monopoly and Risk are fun but half the time I don't even finish they take so long.

Anyone else play Careers? Had this growing up and it was sort of the family game. Random as hell but relatively quick and a great laugh, especially when misfortune befalls other players. :3

A family game I always had fond memories of was 'Escape from Atlantis'. You basically had a group of hexagonal topographical tiles (beach, inland, mountains) in the centre of the board which you loaded up with your people, then the game started and you began trying to get your people onto the boats to ferry them across to the island havens at the edge of the board. Meanwhile, you spin this sort of roulette wheel ball bearing-thing (instantly fun for anyone under the age of 8) and you get to move one of the game's creatures - both helpful and harmful - around the board to attack enemy survivors or help downing pieces.

Apparently in the US it was called 'Survive!' and it had slightly different rules / flat topographical pieces. There's also supposedly an American reprint coming soon under the name 'Survive: Escape from Atlantis' that combines the two versions. Hope it makes it over here.
