Build-A-System

Never seen anything like this thread before.. and i like it! :)

Well, i just bought a radeon 9600pro and i want something to go along with it ( but doesn´t make it the bottleneck). I need cpu/motherboard/memory.

If it isn´t a problem, please use www.komplett.se, just remember that motherboard is MODERKORT i swedish, and memory is MINNE ;) keep it under 2500kr,

If u dont feel like going thru the trouble of using komplett.se, u can use whathever store u like :) just keep it under 300 u.s dollars.

really appreciate it! /Side

You want all of those peices for under $300? What are your current system specs? It might be easier and cheaper to upgreat what you have. I'll try though :)

Hey, I don't know much about building computers, but I hope I supply you with enough info to help me.

First off, I'm in the US in NY to clear up what currency to use.

I'm willing to spend under $1,500 (Although around $1,300 would be nice)

I guess I want...

**2.5mhz (AMD or Pentium, I don't know. Whichever you believe
to be better).
**512MB ram
**80GB Hard Drive
**9800 Pro 128mb (Or a 9700 Pro 128mb, I hear they are nearly
the same).
**DVD-RW or CD-RW, whichever fits into the price range.
**Any keyboard, Microsoft Optical Intellimouse USB, PS/2
**I think a 19 inch CRT monitor, or whatever you recommend +
fits into price range
**Audigy 2
**Above decent pretty good speakers. Your reccomendation
**Any case which cools good -- No flashy stuff
**Anything else to complete a computer I forgot, to keep within
price range.

Thank you very very much in advance.

Sidewinder, this is exactly the kind of service I was looking for about 2 weeks ago. This is great what your doing! I can't thank you enough, but I have a q. Do you think it'd be wiser to wait until about September since I'm only getting the PC for HL2, and you maybe do another one of these in Sept? It'd be great for all those that are upgrading just for HL2. Thanks from all the lazy people on this thread (like me)!

Ok. I've done a little research. Apparently any card above the Geforce 2 quality level for PCI requires, or recommends, system power of 250w. I have system power of 200w. Is it worth buying a Geforce4 or even 5200 over the geforce2?

Also, recommended requirements are Geforce 4 (DX9 supported) or above, and you could run on many of the features. would this still be true running on a PCI port?

Thanks again

SidewinderX143 I need the best prices on a Western Digital Raptor(Not OEM PLZ).

erm...I suppose I wanted to know this:

I heard that there would likely be compatibility issues between a card that says it needs 250w and a system that runs on 200w. (you know something of this, right?) My computer runs on 200w, whereas it would need to run on 250w to be "fully compatible" with the geforce 4 or geforce FX PCI graphics cards. I know now that I'll be able to run the game, even without the upgrade, but none of these cards are too expensive. They're expensive enough, though, that I wouldn't like to buy one (especially not the more expensive ones) and find out that it didn't even work. A 5200 would require more power, probably, than a geforce 4, and a geforce 2 is guaranteed to be compatible. Do you honestly have enough experience to say for certain that the 96 bucks wouldn't be wasted on a card that's not compatible with my system? EDIT: (not to say you aren't experienced, I'm just making doubly certain of everything here)
Also: is it possible that the 5200 would run at about the speed of a geforce 4 or 2 if run on a computer that doesn't run on enough wattage?
Thanks

EDIT: Can I just replace my power supply with a better one? Pricewatch shows some selling for as low as 15 bucks, with wattage well over what I really need.

You're totally evading my questions now, aren't you?

Well, that's fine. I suppose I have other sources.

Yes you can upgrade your power supply, but you should find out what your mobo can handle. And I don't know that about power supplies....

I know that is aparently better for gaming then pentium but by like a frames. its sad you go with a 333 fsb when P4's have up to 800fsb and hyperthreading. just my opion HAIL THE P-4's. besides their way better for multitasking

Really???

I've noticed a lot of the retailers you recommend in your listings have pretty terrible rankings on Resellerratings.com. What is your criteria for recommending these resellers? Personally, I avoid anybody who has less than a 7.0 without exception and I'm even a bit leery of anyone under 8.0.

BuyCyberPC.com, PartsPC.com and US-depot.com are all well below this and have several pretty bad horror stories in the comments section. When newegg can maintain a 9.8+, how can you recommend these companies in good faith? Their prices aren't even that much lower than newegg...

Just my 2 cents!

EDIT: I read that over again and it sounds like a flame, which I really don't mean for it to...I think that the service that you're offering is great and it's awesome what you're doing for these folks. I just don't like the idea of buying something from a company just based on the lowest price...I've been burned too many times from smaller companies. Currently, I like to stick to NewEgg.com, ajump.com, and svcompucycle.com. They're all great companies with very good service records!

thnaks for your concern :)

I've baught RAM from PartsPC, and not had any problems....

I need a good mobo, barton 2500+(or 1800+), ram(3200), and a good heatsink + fan.
I was thinking about a gigabyte mobo with dual channel ram.

Find it all the cheapest, including Shipping and handling.
Im in the US btw.

With that info, I cna ook you up. :)

Sorry, I was in a hurry when I wrote that. Here is a much better version:

[All currency in USD]
I dont have a large budget.
MoBo: Something around $90. I was thinking the Gigabyte GA-7N400-L, nForce2 Ultra400. It has dual channel ram.
RAM: 2x 256 sticks of PC3200. I dont know what brand/type is the best.
CPU: AMD Barton 2500+
Heatsink: ALPHA PAL8045T, and a good fan.
better?

Well I pretty much got my system planned out and already have one component (the sound card [audigy 2 regular]).

• PSU- Antec Power supply True480- $96.00 N82E16817103914
• Processor: Pentium 4-3.0 GHz (800 MHz) - $394.50 googlegear.com

• Video Card: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 - $$369.00 newegg
• Mouse: Logitech MX700 Cordless Mouse - $56.00 free shipping w/ googlegear
• Floppy: Generic - $8

Thats what i have so far. Im looking for a.) a cheaper alternative for about the same power. B.) What 800fsb mobo would you recommend. C.) any suggestions you have of increasing performance per dollar ratio. Im shooting to spend at most $1.3k. Thats with my old computer being sold for $750 minimum. Good luck and thanks for your help.

Just out of interest, with a £1,000 maximium, what is the best computer you can put together in the UK, including VAT and postage?
It must have a flat CRT monitor.
This price must include everything, including Windows XP.

Edwin, that looks like a great system. If you're getting that for 1300, go for it!

Hazza: Gimme a bit, i'll dig up osmething :)

Well im actuallity im only paying at most ~$800 since im selling my old computer for $800 (P4 1.5ghz, 512mb ram, 113gb hdd, Ti4200 o/c beyond 4600, etc, etc). But my real question is what motherboard would you or anyone really recommend for this kind of system? im torn between the ASUS P4P800 Deluxe, Intel D875pbz, or something else.

What can you do with an ABIT KT7A mobo? Chipset VIA KT133/A.

Also, if I haven't annoyed you enough, I have a question about the comp that uses this mobo.

EDIT: err, it's the thread called "motherboard cooling"
