Building comp., lots of help needed.

wow me want that pc also i agree with dumb dude theres no need for a sli motherboard because when u would need a 2nd video card there will be a new on that will be 2x better than the sli'd gfx cards

Damn... I like my Asus motherboard. What would you guys recommend?

If that antivirus is really that good, I'll take it.

Edit: Bah, sli is for Nvidia, right? I don't want to go searching for a more suitable mobo, I'll just get on of Nvidia's cards.

Ok, my harddrives. I have a Seagate and a Raptor, and from previous posts, I think it's been established that the Raptor is better (if that's the case, why is the Seagate more expensive? Just what the company demands?). Should I get two Raptors, then? If I had two of the same HD, I know how everything's going to go.

Why is it more expensive? Look at the capacity, man. 76GB vs. 400GB.

#1: I'd cut down that Seagate. No one needs 400GB, goddamn.
#2: Two Raptors would be very good.

Alright, so is the Raptor better at doing stuff, but has less space?

Is the operating system I linked good?

Current Asus mobo + Nvidia card?

u will prob. only need 80gb for now dont c y u would need more than that but running 2 raptors in RAID0 will allow things load alot faster

I don't think he's ready for RAID.

The OS is good, get that. Go for the two 76BG Raptors.

With the MB you picked, go for an nVidia card.

Good OS, and I'll get an Nvidia card after all.

I'm planning on getting a lot of big games like FEAR and Doom 3, so I hope the Raptors can handle it all smoothly. I'm going to need you guys' help with a card, and what's RAID?

I actually wasn't quite sure what RAID was until I made this thread. Basically, it speeds up seek times but is overall kinda useless for personal computers.

Um... about the card, it really depends on what you want. The latest nVidia card is the 7800GTX. And you're going to decide wether you want to go SLi (two video cards at once).

Heh, I think I'll take just one of those new ones for now. I won't worry about RAID then.

Alright, this last question should should clear up all the harddrive fun facts: On all other computer I've had, there have been two drives. I know installing something on one of them will only take space on that one, but suppose then you want to play that game, so you put in the disk on the other drive, the Raptors can do that, right? Drives have on all my previous computers.

Qonfused laughs at the fact that you can't differentiate between CD/DVD drives and hard drives.

:|

Yeah I can, becaused they're labled on the front. Wasn't really what I was asking, though.

Edit: Oh, you said and harddrives, and I just realized my question was crap, please ignore it.

Anything else we need to cover?

Not anything that comes to mind.
Err, add a broadband card in there if you haven't already got one.

Unless I really really should have it, I think I'm done now.

Thank you so much, everyone who has helped with this, I'm sure I'll really enjoy it once I have it. If it doesn't work when it's all together, you'll be hearing more from me. A big thanks again to everyone. I didn't have a clue about computer parts when I created this, and now I think I might be able to make updates myself in the future :)

Again, is it a really good idea to get one of those, whatever they are (I'm guessing it does something for the internet), otherwise, I think this has come to a close.

A broadband card meaning the card that fits into a PCI slot that allows your PC to connect to the internet.

>_>

It sounded like a suggestion :frown:

Fine, I'll go look for a fricking broadband card :hmph:

Don't you mean a network card that will allow you to connect your pc to a router/adsl modem via a 10/100mbit connection? Never heard of a 'broadband card'

Hmm...

Hey Qonfused, do you mean something like this little DSL wireless adapter that's connected to my computer by a cord?

Yes.

I don't know what exactly they're called... kinda like video card or graphics card or CPU and processor.

Ok, so we're covered on that :)

Was that the last piece I need for my computer, or is there one more evil piece of hardware that's been waiting in the shadows ready to strike just when I think it's safe?

Well here's a quick checklist:
(essentials)
Case
Power supply
Motherboard
Processor
Video card
RAM
Hard drive
Optical drive(DVD)
Windows or some other operating system

(additional)
Sound card
Network card
DSL router
Case fans
Sweet arse lights
Rad mother fetching Newegg.com sticker
Rubber bands to keep the flaps on the case closed
A legitimate copy of Windows or some other operating system (just kidding about these last three. ;))

If you can think of anything else...just add it to your shopping cart or ask or whatever.

Thanks Boltress, I think I'm set!

See previous post for much thank-you-ness. It's been a long walk down the road of this thread; 15 pages. Wow. I'll begin ordering parts soon, shall I occasionally fill you guys in?

Yeh should do, are you building it yourself or are you getting someone to do it for you? Not sure if you mentioned it and I don't want to scan through 15 pages of posts to find out :p If you are building it yourself, then I would keep up posted so we can give you advice on building it :D

I'm planning on building it myself, it would give me a better sense of accomplishment. I got a pm from Mr. White a while ago offering help, so we've worked out that I'll contact him on AIM once I have all the parts.

I'm willing to help as well, although I don't like/have AIM. If you have MSN:

[email protected]

I don't like it much, either. Havn't used it in months. I just find it useful for things like that. It would be much more efficient for someone to help me build it across AIM than on the forums.

Well, I have an email address. [email protected] if you want to send one. I've never liked Yahoo or Hotmail. They both have their own little things that annoy me. Besides, Inbox gives 2 gig addresses free :D

Umm... if you got it, possibly you both could help me? I dunno, we'll see how it goes.

Oh... umm... I guess we would have to decide which of us is getting the other.

Edit: I'll get the MSN... *grumble*

Well, we'll get back to that later. I still feel weird about getting these Raptor harddrives because they have so little space. I looked around at some more Western Digital drives, and I don't think any of them can read or write as fast as this one can, but it only has 74 gigs. Even the Maxtor in this Dell has 160.

Just a random question, on the device manager on My Computer, when I double click on processors, why does it show two?

About the two processors, I have no idea... glitch maybe?

About the harddrives, Raptors are just good for general purposes, mainly because they can search, find, and write super-fast. Overall, it's really up to you wether to get one or not. One Raptor would be fine, if you wanted to do that -- just store Windows and your games on there. You could get a slower, more capacity harddrive as a second drive, say a 160GB. That would be grand.

Muwahahaha... Qonfused and DannyC's email addresses!! :naughty:

j/k
:p

Good luck with building your computer.

There are drives out there that get pretty close to WD Raptors when it comes to performance. Obviously they won't be as fast, but they are pretty good. You should try and check out some reviews as you get a very good compremise between capacity and speed.

Do you have a pentium 4 with hyper threading? Not sure if they show as 2 seperate cpu's in the device manager, but I know they do in the performance tab of task manager, but tahts the only thing I can think of.

LoL you slut!! (j/k)

MSN has betrayed me. Not that I care too much, getting an email now and then would be kind of nice.

I don't think I do (processor), and I'm nto sure how to check, but it's not all that important. Screw it, I'm getting the two Raptors. Besides, if I ever start to run low on space, I can just get a third, right? What was the fan situation some time earlier, did you say one of those flat harddrive fans for the top one? What about the bottom? Already exposed enough to get cooled by the case fans?

I'll be ordering the small miscellaneous stuff soon. :)

I wouldn't bother twith two raptors, as qonfused said just get a single raptor and a larger capacity drive for other stuff

3ssence said:

Yeh thats what i'd do, raptor for games, apps, windows etc and a larger drive for mp3's, app installers, videos etc.

Yeah, I guess that will work. Back to a Seagate; those things have their own little universe inside themselves. Didn't the one I chose earlier have 400 gigs?

So if I have Windows on the Raptor it will run faster? That's cool. Harddrives are so much fun :D I'll also put smaller games I feel like playing such as Red Alert 2 and Starcraft on the Seagate, but stuff like Half-Life 2 and FEAR go to the Raptor.

After something is already installed on a certain drive, will it still ask what drive I want to use when I put the disk in?

... you know, I don't even know why I'm asking crap like that. Oh well. This weekend I'll order my mouse, keyboard, and speakers.

Edit: Yep, here's my hugeass memory capacity friend.

To be honest, no one will need 400GB unless someone's a video editor or is running a server. But whatever.

You're getting the idea about the Raptor: put the important stuff on the Raptor -- everything else on the second drive.

About the "what drive do you want to use" thing, no, it won't. When you install a game, it will ask you where you want to save the game. From then on, like when you click on the shortcut, it will automatically detect that that certain game is on the Raptor/Seagate. No worries.

Awesome. Well, with a 400 gig drive, I don't think I'll be needed to get another from lack of space any time soon. :)

I'm going to guess watching movies doesn't put any crap on the drive you're watching them on, so I watch stuff on the Raptor, as well. I guess all that's left is the waiting game; I'll tell you what parts I have and when.

Currently eating: Ramen, the gamer's best friend.
