looks nice ..is that the depth of field thingy that Valve is also working on for Day of defeat? looks a bit underwhelming in the screen if that's what it is ..I guess the only real measure of how it will impact gaming will be when we actually see it for ourselves

here's Valve's utilization of depth of field

Depth of field is so pretty I could cry. In fact, I think I will *cries*

Well, I read some technical article way back that stated that real depth of field will never really be able to make it into a game due to the current technical limitations, but then again, these so called DOFs aren't DOFs as much as they're illusions of it I guess.
I'll post a link if I can find it..

it looks weird when they wear those clothes in such a hot weather...

I dunno. Those screenshots don't really flatter DoF too much. I thought the DoD Source trailer made it look a lot more natural. This just seems to be trying too hard.

How does the game know where the player is "looking?" If they can't do that, then the effect is essentially just blurring the graphics. I'm looking at my computer screen right now, but the coke can a bit to the right, the pen on the left aren't blurry anything like those screenshots. It's hard to describe but since it's how everyone sees, just look at something... those screenshots are not what it's like in real life.

How can the game tell where I'm looking on the screen. If you have to point your crosshair every time you want to see what's in a window or something, the game will get very frustrating... I definently don't have to throw off my aim just to look up a bit in real life.

DoF is just a gimmick. And those screenshots look terrible, just the faces... ugh.

it's like in real life ..when you're looking at someone in front of you they look fine but everything in the distance in blurry ..but if you focus on something in the distance (like zooming in video games) the person in the foreground becomes blurry

I know that's how it works, but I agree with whoever posted above you. Until games can actively map where your real life eyes are looking, this is quietly pointless.

That is, unless I see it work really well. In that DoD video, the Depth of field was done for you, because you wouldn't be looking at the blown away walls of a house, you would be looking at the people fighting in the streets.

So... your character always looks straight where his gun or whatever is pointing? That's my point, if they blur the background and buildings, I need to be able to quickly look to say a man in a window, without throwing off my aim on those mean looking men walking up.

In real life, this means just... looking up for a breif second, but in the game, that would mean moving the mouse, waiting for the game to refocus because I doubt it's instantaneous, and then moving back down (assuming what you looked at wasn't a threat).

Just seems gimmicky and unneccesary.

EDIT: @ Reginald
That's a bit closer to what would be realistic, looking at the action... But what if I *want* to admire the scenery :D. It's just not a good feature, though I'd like to see what Valve pulls off. Then again, I would have to actually buy DoD:S for that...

The thing is in real life you do not notice the blurring that much since you mostly process what you are directly focussing on, but when looking at a monitor often you focus on a pretty large part of it, especially in Adventure games. So DoF doesn't seam that much fun in a game, it's like having a smudge on the screen. It's fun for in game movies MGS style but when playing I wan to see the whole screen clearly.
I guess it will have it's uses to highten the senses in some situations, but for the most part it doesn't appeal me.

it doesnt matter where you look it's only when you focus on distant objects that it would take affect

so if I wanted to look at something in the distance I'd either zoom in or press a button to "look ahead"

again this just mimics Depth of field ..real depth of field is not possible in video games

If this is the case, I don't see much point in implementing it. :|

dont knock it till you try it

Yeah, I know I'm being a little harsh. Just in this day of Crysis and other beautiful looking games, they should make sure the gameplay is right before flashing graphics around.

I'm hoping depth of field will add something to the gameplay

I dont care about the depth of field, that game looks ugly. I'd rather see better textures and models than overdone Dof

I'd be surprised. I mean, it looks cool, but that's like asking anti-aliasing to add something to a game. :borg:

I for one am glad that there's another western game on the horizon. The previews are pretty positive, so I am looking forward to it.

If only Outlaws came back with a full 3D makeover...
Then my life would be complete.

yeah me too, game looks decent.

also didn't that shooter Black do a similiar blurriness technique when reloading in that game, everything around the gun blurred while you reloaded or sumit?

Errr...depth of field shouldn't be a problem to implement being Crysis already has it in game last time I checked. :/ Am I wrong?

Exactly.

Also, this game doesn't look up to much from the videos on the website, although I realise it's still alpha.

Game looks pretty interesting.

And DoF isn't a realism thing, it's just a cinematic effect. So I wouldn't compare it to your eyes, but more to a camera. It will make the games look more like the movies we watch, which isn't necessarily good or bad. Personally I would switch DoF off if it were an option (which it will be for DoD:S).

The depth of field is making me cry too!

But not because it's pretty, it's because it's making my eyes hurt. ;(

Probably just a placeholder. I am one of the few people that loved Gun. This is looking good. What's the plot?

Actually, I don't think the DOF is overdone.

I think the screens are just streched and/or badly compressed. >_____>

Resized to a more appropriate size:

that looks better. The hdr on that could use some work though...plus the hard shadows really detract from outdoor environments

This game looks pretty interesting. It's almost hard to believe the old west setting is hardly touched in FPS.

Let's hope this turns out to be a really great game.

Who doesn't want to play the role in an old western movie style game? Awesome.

I don't mind how overdone the DoF is. I just don't want to be playing, glance to my right and wonder whether my contact lens has fallen out or something. Like it's been said before, I don't want to move my frame of vision just to see if that blur in the corner of my screen is "generic bandit # 3" or "busty cowboy girl # 7".

Well, the only other FPS from Techland(The guys doing this game), is Chrome SpecForce, and having played that myself, it was a pretty damn mediocre game.. So I'm not having any form of high expectations for this one.:D

DoF would be a good way in Single player games to get you to focus on the right stuff. I doubt DoF would be used in such a player limiting way such as where you point your crosshairs.

Depth of Field is the kind of thing I always pictures tilt sensors helping out in. With the PS3 or Wii controller you could move the controller to focus while using the analogue sticks normally. Either that or use the right analogue stick to control head movement and focus while the tilt controls weapon aiming.

But for a PC I think it would be quite irritating to have to look/aim directly at whatever you want to see. I'm sure they've tested this well enough to make it fit in well with the gameplay though.

Oh yeah, the game looks awesome. We need more western themed games.

DoF will be as annoying as HDR imho. I don't like HDR now--I find it a distracting pain in the butt. I can only imagine how my eyes will feel after this new tech example of "because we can"...:|
