City 17 accents

Anyone else notice that despite the setting of HL2 being in Europe that everyone in the E3 videos (including city 17 fighters) have American accents?

On the videos I can distinctly hear the city 17 fighters yelling "Stryder!!!" not "Stryduh!!!" Yelling 'Stryder' is against Proper London English 101, where you omit the r's on the end of words
"Pass the buttah" (instead of butter)
and add r's where is doesn't exist
"Princess Dianer" (instead Diana)



Seriously though, I heard no european accents, english or otherwise. What's up with that?

You could ask the same about many a hollywood movie . Instead your required to move into suspend disbelief mode for the duration

They may have picked a neutral accent (not true British, and not true Texan American) simply because well... Its neutral. Although it is weird that no Eastern European accents are heard. Maybe the Combine are actually North Americans?

EDIT: Maybe alot of the people you hear are people who escaped from Black Mesa.

No, many hollywood have decent accents, even Renee Zellweger who is from Texas no less, won best actress award for Bridget Jones Diary.

Now, if you argue actors like Kevin Kostner 'Robin Hood' LOL then you got a really good point!

That's a pretty gross stereotype of British accents. There are dozens of accents in Britain, and the differences can be incredible. I have a mild Yorkshire accent and most definitely say the R at the end of "strider". I have no idea why the citizens of an Eastern European country would speak in a British accent anyway..

I don't know how you could tell what kind of accent they have. You never hear any of them use a regular conversational tone (were it's easiest to pick up accents). Maybe the city is isolated from the rest of the population in Europe and hasn't picked up the local accent.

The 101 "english" you refer to, and i use english in the losest possible sense of the word, is typically cocky/london and non typical of an english accent tbpfh

Its the equivelent of the american southern drawl in states such as Texas

The city looks like it's been deserted for some time, and we do know that the population has been depleted, so it's likely the resistance fighters (for lack of a better word) aren't native to whatever country they're in.

I don't care about Bush, frankly. I don't trust his reasons for going into Iraq, either...but the end result was good. Those people are now free from a brutal dicatator, and they can begin to decide how their country is run. I'm simply stating the fact - that so many of these War-Protestors are hippocritical.
