Well seeing as the mods arent the reason why people like this site, perhaps he shoulda asked us instead...
Ya know, if he actually gave 2 cents about our opinion and all...
(Which according to him he does.. so.. hence my confusion)

Now tell me why there is barely any new people EVER posting in here? Its the same ole 3-4 people and nobody else, usually.

I wish you guys would name names ..we all know we're talking about me here ...dont be shy I wont bite ..things tend to roll off my back :)

and no, there are many new people who participate in the politics forum ..SAJ (althought not new, has posted more frequently), Bob_Marley, gick, baxter, JNightshade etc

Oh yes. Munro. The pinnacle of infallibility, loved by all and hated by none.

Irrelevant. He owns the site and is the ultimate authority on what happens to it.

I only have a few short hours (if that) to spam myself a reputation as political mastermind and dominator of all debate :) .

I'm fully aware of that, but in the absence of sound reasoning, I and others can protest, regardless of the supposed sealed outcome. Pointing to Munro, while indeed pertinent, is a weak form of justification.

it was never stated that it was munro's decision but rather voted on by mods ..as far as know Munro doesnt involve himself with day to day activities ...is there something you know that the rest of us dont?

I actually put you there but for some reason I erased you when I took out jondy (cuz he's a veteran)

Munro did indeed poll the moderators.

Heh, I just remembered that orange link on the forum index page that appeared a little while back; "How can we improve the site? We want your feedback!"

And then just the mods decide to do this with no feedback from anyone on the forums, the justification being 'WE R TEH LAWR!' And the orange thing vanishes. Yeah, well.

I can't really say I understand the resistance to this move. Did you value the petty arguments that much? Are endless debates that never move past the "throwing statements around" phase, into understanding and *gasp* perhaps an adjustment of one's opinion? Was this cesspit your heaven?

Why bother, if his owning the site means that ultimately his is the only opinion?

Good heavens, where have I been? (oogling Alyx in the hi-def mod:smoking: ) It'll be a shift in the direction this site is going, that's for sure. Good or bad? -meh If I want politics, I'll go to to the forums on randi.org. It's certainly a way to breed a sense of community though (although theoretically Aftermath is just around the corner, and that'll spark a large number of fun topics).

I was erased? That's even worse ;) .

Different strokes for different folks. I cant say I'm really a fan of the endless topics about a Combine soldiers eyes in the Aftermath forum.

It was a sound insight into how the people on this forum think; it certainly breeds a sense of community and identity in a forum that otherwise is very anonymous.

What warranted the 'cesspit'? This is a discussion forum; political debates get heated. Animosity rarely spilled over into other forums - if anything it was contained as the subforum was an outlet. There was an amount of ignorance; some of the posters were quite young. This kindof thing is rampant over any message board and not grounds for closure.

Most arguments were circular, rooted in deep-seated ideological beliefs. Many people are not going to change their opinions. But I learned a little from the forum, about politics and about the members here.

I won't end with a snappy metaphorical exaggeration... 'cesspit'? 'heaven'? Let's not get carried away.

Let's just say I'll continue the loose planning of my campaign for the banning of the entire hl2.net user list (yes, that includes me). Forum quality would improve.

I could end with a snappy metaphorical exaggeration. 'cesspit'? 'heaven'? Let's not get carried away.

What can I say, I'm in a rethorical mood today.

I agree with TGB. Sorry, Jondy.

I think the forum closing is Munro's conspiracy to get you all out of the house and get some fresh air.

I'd rather die. :X

It's Munro's attempt at genocide, because many people agree with you, Ikerous.

Munro is evil.

But I'm cunning, I already have a life!
Just not enough money to live it, damn.

Time for plan B.

wait im confused why the hell would we close the political forum? if you dont like it, dont come in.

EDIT- o well i c now, i think this is quite ridiculous... the politics forum is really the only reason i come here anymore. B/c all the other forums are so inactive i just chill here. If people can't handle being in the politics forum w/o starting a fight they shouldn't be here period. Why punish everyone who does use the forums correctly? This decision makes 0 sense and might cause many people, well me at least, to leave this site :/
Completely agree.
<3

The only thing i can think of at this point is to email munro discussing why we'd like it to stay open. I just emailed him and hopefully if enough other people do so he'll see that the forum has popular demand and isn't as bad as it's made out to be.

It's gravy. To be fair, I'm not proposing the politics forum to be made of goodness and light, I'd just rather it was there than not.

I thought Munro's conspiracy was to keep us all inside until the air ran out?

They're closing the political forums now? Since when? Since why?

If the spam and flamewars don't come from here, they're going to come from somewhere else...

He tried that, and three years later you're all still alive.

This poll is useless unless you subtract 666 from the yes option.

I really don't post on protest warrior much because it's so big that usually what I want to say is said, and it's an agree fest because I'm fairly right wing. Also, most left wingers that end up there are extremists and actual communists/crazy people. At the equivelant left wing site, democratic underground, it is against the rules for me to register because I am conservative (states in the rules not to, they ban them regardless of trolling or reasoned debate)

So it's like there's no debate that can reach middle ground.

Here, while there is a tendency for more of the members to be leftist, most are not extremely and can debate, and there are only a few other conservatives so there's a lot of stuff where I can actually get into it.

I'm going to post this here, the other main thread on the Closure of this forum:

Serious discussion isn't outlawed, far from it, such discussions exist, it's the seeming news-reporting that goes on.

Bad theads:

US Conservatives call Canada 'Retarded'

Zomg US Lies Again

Bush wanted to bomb Al-Jezeera

(I don't mean to single out threadposters, don't take it that way :) )

Examples of good theads:

Vote For 2006

Public Smoking Ban in the UK (poll)

I'd like to underline that this does not mean an end to serious, sensible, rational discussion on this website.

I've allways liked the open nature of this politics forum... I hope i'm not alone.

I like seeing peoples opinions, even if they are misguided sometimes and often offensive. Its all part of open debate and learning just how people think and their views on the world.

I dont want this forum to close. Its one of the most active and often most interesting sections on this site. I couldnt care less if people have heated debates here. Thats half the god damn point.

Just my "two cents"

I voted "No", because that's the minority, and I'm, like, so on the edge and crazy. And fringe and that.

As obvious as it might sound, that really is scary in a "big brother" type way. Bad debate = double plus bad thoughts.
Two out of three of those supposed "bad" threads are legitimate debates arising out of real-world events. What next, stop people from referring to the real world all together?

Ah well, its a private space and they can do what they like I suppose, its still a shame though.
I came here firstly for the HL2 rumours and stayed for the inflammatory politics, I guess I'll be on my way. I always loitered (with my jaw on the ground with amazement at the sheer stupidity of some people) more than I posted, but the job of "curmudgeonly old fella bashing the twits around the head with the big 'ol stick of facts and sense" was filled.

R.I.P politics forum, we will miss you, may you flame in hell.

Grr don't think of the topic of those threads, I was talking about the type of threads that they are - news reporting. Halflife2.net does not have a political inclination at all. We favour no sides.

Yeah, I got that , but only by looking at the explanation behind it in the other thread.
I mean c'mon, what did you expect? Posting ill conceived arguments in the politics thread ?
Pfft, asking for it really. ;)
