Cloverfield

Yeah, when the monster starts barelling down the street as the main characters cross from the half-collapsed building, I was literally on the edge of my seat. It was such an adrenaline rush.

I can't believe they showed the monster in a commercial.

That was probably when the monster scared me the most because it really did look like it was coming for them and them alone.

Also, I laughed at the Half-Life/random Headcrab like placement of the smaller monster in the stairwell that's just... there, waiting for them. Memories of poison headcrabs in inane places came flooding back.

The sound in the movie was enough to scare you shitless and blow off your head. Also I don't think they should show the monster in the commercials.

I haven't seen the movie nor will I in the theaters but I saw a trailer tonight that blatantly shows the monsters. The f*cktards that make the trailers deserve a nice case of colon cancer. They think the American audience is complete retards, which isn't much of a stretch, and that we need everything explained before we see the movie or we won't get it.

Don't let knowing what the monster is put you off. I knew what the monster was about 2 days after it's US release and it's still one of the best movies I've seen for a long time. I also knew quite a lot of the story, too.

Wasn't impressed tbh, unless its part of a series of films, in which case - rock on.

Oh yeah, just remembered something. Sorry if this has already been mentioned.

At the very start of the movie when he's filming outside the window of his hotel/apartment, did anyone else notice that plushie toy on the chair to the left? I swear it was a bullsquid or maybe a vortigaunt.

What actually happened to the woman that got bitten and started feeling unwell? Those scientists or whatever just dragged her off behind a curtain and you saw a spray of blood, did they kill her or did something come out of her??? Was so confused when that happened.

Monster wasnt shown nearly enough, every time it got close the camera would turn away, i mean ffs if im supposed to be scared i atleast want to see what it looks like properly instead of milisecond flashes of it.

Either way, was a pretty damn good film.

My friend next to me was asking me "what happened" on that part, and I wasn't certain myself but..

I think her blood was infected and if it touched anyone then they would also become infected. From what we saw, she seemed to expand to the point she blew up. They had to take the main characters away because they would of rushed into the tent - therefore being splattered with infected blood.

Atleast that's how I saw it.

Her head blew up I think.

It's supposed to be part 1? Where did ya hear that?

Great movie. And I DO think her head blew up. It was kinda scary.

Scary as hell when the helicopter crashed and when Hud got chewed up by the monster

I didn't really think it was 'scary' as such, I found it more of a thriller.

I'm suprised I didn't jump at the part when the monster burst up towards the chopper.. I kind of expected something sudden to happen.

Dissapointing that we didn't really see how it all ended.

But they are making a sequel !! w00t !!

Yeah, I almost peed my pants when Cloverfield came back up to hit the helicopter.

I got scared shitless when the monster was right behind them in central park.

The solider brought into that medical centre had a torso full of fresh air. Thats what happened to her.

That.

No one is really sure what happens to the bite victims, but a lot of people seem to be convinced that the smaller parasites are hatched from the corpses. It's plausible, somewhat, but I trust JJ and the crew knew better than to blatantly rip off Alien with that sort of thing. The fact they take her and other bite victims to quarantine, though, is interesting. Their blood must be generally infected 100% after the parasite infects them.

Actually someone on something awful made a .gif of the scene (I'll have to find it D: ) but from you see the torso starts expanding rapidly and then just explodes. So whether its some crazy venom or smaller parasites coming from the corpse, I think we can be pretty sure that it all ends wiht your entire front half splitting open D:

Have a source for that statement?

Yeah im wondering the same too. Where is everyone getting the idea that a sequel is coming out?

Id rather not see one lest we have "Cloverfield 2: Book of shadows".

I dont see how they could make a sequel. It must of been really hard to end that sort of film, it would be even more difficult to make a sequel.

Did anyone else think it ended to sudden? I heard atleast half the people near me go: "Aghh what?!"

I really don't see any better way it could have ended. A "happy ending" or something similar would have just been...meh.

Just got back from seeing it and I did enjoy it quite a lot. The special effects were outstanding, the SOL's head, the bridge... fantastic. Depressing ending though, but I'd rather it had end like that than have some half-arsed miraculous survival thrown in where Rambo swoops down and tears the monster's head off with his bare hands.

Here's hoping for a sequel to explain what the hell happened.

Edit: Also, how did they not hear/see the monster when they got out of the helicopter wreck? Hud even ran back to get the camera, surely he would've seen it towering behind them all?

The least realistic part (obviously excluding the monsters..) was the fact he was carrying the camera the whole way through. If those little creatures jumped on me, I would be scared sh*tless... I wouldnt care about the camera! And when they cross the rooftop to get Beth, he still held the camera as still as possible

S'what I said a few pages back. Very odd.

Also sequel confirmation; http://www.worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=7405&count=0

So it's "early talks" at the moment.

Maybe he should have dropped it. That would have been interesting to watch.

I like the idea that the exploding is used as a panic inducer to the prey population; to make them act irrational and stuff.

Saw it yesterday. It was ****ing awesome.

At first I thought the shaky cam would be annoying, but it didn't really bother me. It started slowly, but after a few minutes it was all intense and not a single boring moment for me. Despite that, I didn't feel it was 80-something minutes, I thought it was longer; anyway it was just about right.

My only gripes:

The monster jumping at the chopper in the end. I thought it was a bit forced; I'd rather they didn't highlight the fact that we're watching the 'main' characters and let something special happen to them. Same goes for the monster attacking Hud in the end. Surely it had better things to do than to 'sneak up' on 3 people and kill one of them? And how come the other characters did not get infected with what Marla had? I thought they were bitten/scratched as well?

I don't understand why people were so surprised it ended abruptly. Didn't they say something like "if you can hear the sirens, you're in the bombardment zone" during the movie? I figured they'd die hiding below that small bridge.

I don't get how the monster doesn't get hurt by so many explosions. I mean, it wasn't even scratched after getting bombed. Also, I've noticed a big gap in appreciation between the young crowd and the older crowd. I think that 40+ers just have trouble assimilating all of the information and interpreting when it's not presented in a clear dried and cut manner.

P.S. I think that if a sequel were shot, it should be in the form of a documentary (from after the incident), so that it reveals all of the information, and included a variety of video sources (including the first movie).

Actually after watching it a second time if you pay attention to the monster in the last chopper scene you can see its back looks like swiss cheese. There seems to be huge dents and bruises all over its back, and besides even though it wasn't killed by them, those last bombs before the chopper crash obviously hurt the monster enough to cause it roar in pain like that and then fall over. Of course only to rise up and attack the first thing it saw in the air.

I like the idea of a fake documentary. It would have to from a totally shocked and outraged conspiracy perspective, I think.

Critter got hit in the back, freaked out, saw something flying, and attacked it.

Again, it was in the park, saw some people, earlier it was mentioned the creature was eating people, so it went after hud.

They were scratched not bitten.

Did anyone else notice how quickly the military got there. What is the closest military base to Manhattan? It looked like they had quite a few troops on the streets within less than an hour of the first quake.

An hour is a long time for preliminary troops and vehicles to be deployed :p

They were the New York National Guard, or something, and if they are anything like the TA here in England, they're stationed either in or right next to most cities.

Don't quote me on that, though.

Saw it last night, really enjoyed it. Spoilers etc.

The first ten minutes were annoying tbh, not just the shaky-cam but just in general, I actually didn't really care less for them at that point. Once they got to the roof it kicked off great. The sound, damn.

The scene where they leave the small store and you see Marlena shell-shocked and the buoldings in the distance decimated.

The actual shots of the monster you see on T.V( the helicopters spotlights on it) when they are in the electronics store kinda sucked, CGI-wise i mean.

Some scenes were really effective for the shaky cam I felt. The scene in the subway, jeez that scarred the crap outta me. The one on the street when the military attack, again the sound!

Also the scene in the field hospital was really well-done, from the soldier with the massive chest wound, the dead parasite, culminating in Marlena's eyes bleeding and being rushed away, the general chaos of that was really gripping. Even the scene where they lift Beth off her impalement with the camera on the floor.

Like people have mentioned, the heli scene and Hud's death were a bit questionable. The CGI of the monster I also thought really sucked at times but ultimately it was a really tense, exciting film.

Also how hot were the three main girls? DAMN!

I find the criticism of the CG to be almost downright bizarre. I don't recall seeing a single thing I'd seriously criticize about it.

Just the monster, everything else looked great, destroyed New York etc. F.e the gif that we've seen for the last few months prior to release of the monster behind the buildings, the one people where people trying to make out what it was, that looked fine but the big aerial shots of the monster crashing through the city looked lame to me. It looked best with just fleeting glimpses.
