Damn, British Army is HARDCORE

If you're refering to people trusting the President as being blind patriotism, then you're wrong - That's not patriotism at all, that's just being naive.

yeh true, i mean im alrite if someone loves their country and likes to say that they do ( except the french  ).
but ill tell you what does piss me off, is when people take the piss out of Britain, for reasons they shouldnt ( our suposed big teeth and uglyness!!! :p ;) ).

Yeah whats with the bad teeth and food thing anyway? Just because our grandparents had to live off heavy rationing after the war....kinda silly really.

Agreed, patriotism isn't in believing your president or prime minister, but in believing what your country and people stand for, not the idiot who they put in charge.

What I meant was that 'blind patriotism' is often used by leaders and people in charge as a weapon in order to blind and pursuade people into comitting monstrocities.

Take Nazi Germany for an example. Hitler would have never gained so much power in the first place if he wasn't able to whip up a blind frenzied patriotic 'revolt' in the general population. Take the holocaust, many German's accepted it because they believed it was in their countries best interest.

While following your Leaders may not be 'patriotic' in the true sense of the word, it is their questioning of 'patriotism' that those same leaders often use in order to get you on their side.

Other examples of this use of 'blind patriotism' can be seen in wars such as Vietnam and The First World War. Perhaps not towards the end of those conflicts, but certainly at the beginning.

The Vietnamese really abused blind patriotism, it is in their culture.

heh, i wouldnt compare the british army to the us army....the marines are the true fighting force of the US(army has its specialties and uses, dont get me wrong, and rangers are kickass at what they do), but the marines are 100% self sufficient, and their standard forces are almost as well trained as the army rangers(the rangers are much better at what they do, but that is all they do).....as they say, ARMY=Ain't Ready for Marines Yet.

all in good fun though, each has its uses....as our local USAF recruiter says "we fight wars by pushing buttons", or the old adage "marines take territory, the army occupies it." Of course the navy is good to, they are the boat people. and the army has its use in occupying territory, supporting combat, and general cannonfodder ;).

but, the kickest-ass fighting force in the world is the navy SEALs, those guys are beasts.

[/opinion]

those british dudes are definately hardcore. there are pockets of crazy-ass people in every branch of every military, but its always cool to hear about them.

as an entire effort, id say the guy who "wrote" All Quiet on the Western Front has nearly everyone beaten(like its even a competition, lol)

Finally, someone gets why I'm patriotic and what I mean. :D

Humans need Chaos and war is the most available form of Chaos.

We average about 2-5 wars a centuary (roughly one every 20 years)

Way to go Brits btw

Did anyone read Cornelius Ryan's A Bridge Too Far? That's why I'm not surprised about the British hardcore. It's not only the training it's the British spirit. (out of ammunition... God save the King!)

I would have to say that that is the very best war movie ever made.

I saw the movie and it is really good but Band of Brothers beats it in every way possible.

I completely agree! I loved that movie!

Totally underrated.

Comparing it to Band of Brothers is unfair because technically band of brothers was ten hours long, A Bridge Too Far was just over two.

I love band a brothers though , got the boxset
