Dark Messiah of Might and Magic SP DEMO on Aug. 8!!!

Me too. Fileplanet is totally awesome... if you give them money. I think its worth it though.

I just started so I have just under an hour and a half until its done. Whoever gets to play first, can you tell me if its the same level as in the video demonstrations?

I will, 7 minutes left on mine... Ill run fraps too to get a screenie for you guys...

I'll only be playing the beginning because I have to leave for work in about an hour. :\ Assuming this better be at least an hour demo. or you can play it over a few times

Go to 3dgamers or gamershell if you dont want to wait.

Myself, I have a fp account =p

3DGamers has wait times too. :|

Meh, I'll just stick to fileplanet, I won't be able to play any of these demoes until the weekend anyways.

IRT Asuka : Post a couple screenies instead of a pack, pretty please? :D

edit: hmm I bet installing takes a while

edit2: LOL ROFL LOL, its installing GCF files. like hl2 :)

I played it. It was pretty short and cuts you off pretty suddenly. The fighting obviously was amazing, and you get to play on that level shown in the 3 trailers and kick some orc ass. Fun demo, I think I might purchase once I get the cash

Wow!! GG

Its a 20 minute demo :\ Full tutorial level + the first level and it gets cut at the end

AKA, you dont fight the boss. Yes its the level from the videos.

Anyways, really fun game. There wasnt too much combat but the demo was fun and great graphics. Some nice additions to the source engine. Thumbs up !

i suggest to get the demo if you dont mind waiting forever for it to download

Great demo..Going to be buying this for sure. No screenshot key can be bound and the console doesnt work. I was going to post 1600res FULL HDR FULL AA/AF and settings on max. The game looks amazing.

Use Fraps.

So, what weapons/spells can you use?

Yep, definately buying this one. Whats the release date, anyone heard? The demo is suprisingly short, but well worth the download guys. Plus you can play through several times and try out all the different traps. Combat feels good, a little awkward at first, but I think with a little more practice, I'll be able to pull off some pretty sweet moves :) I can't wait for this!

I have about 12 hrs to go at this speed. Damn Wireless Card!

Why couldn't they have just preloaded this over Steam? Instead of us scrambling for a spot on crowded servers. I've got 30 more minutes to wait in line.

As has been said, for how massive it is the demo isn't very long and a good chunk of it is reserved for a lame, pretty unnecessary tutorial/prologue in which you are taught what could be known by simply looking at the controls. Still, it is hard to be bored when even the generic dungeon setting of the prologue is brought to magnificent splendor through the Source engine. Seriously, the graphics of Dark Messiah cannot be overstated (Although I was a little annoyed by the fact that its fire looks exactly like Half-life 2's).

Then you get to the mission and are treated with an extremely entertaining little fantasy sand-box. Given the very fun, very intuitive combat of Messiah and the Source physics, it goes without saying that the demo level is a blast. You can set traps, blow things up, push things onto enemy's heads, backstab enemies (and I mean actual back stab, not a numerical damage bonus), light arrows on fire and proceed to set orcs ablaze, use corpses as shields, and do pretty much everything else you've never been able to do in "Pure" stat-based RPGs but have always wanted to. Bioware: take note.

That being said, it'll remain to be seen if this kind of gameplay can carry an entire game. I'm not all too optimistic about the multiplayer mode or storyline, but I guess we'll see. I'm sure I'll end up buying the game, regardless.

Edit: Also, the physics need a great deal of tweaking. Orcs react to wooden barrels you kick at them as if they were trucks.

Great fun, short though. I like the combat system, if only Oblivion had a combat system like that.

However, enemies are a bit too easy to dispose of imo, the demo was VERY easy. Just kick someone off a ledge or throw a barrell on their face (seems to pretty much instakill them). Sure, it's entertaining. The first few times, but without challenge that bit of entertainment won't carry the whole game. There's little incentive (at least with the enemies in the demo) to bring out all the cool melee tricks when you can just kick 'em into a fire.

"OH LOOK AT ME! IM AN ORC, STANDING ON SOME WOODEN BOARDS ONLY SUPPORTED BY A CROOKED BEAM WITH BARRELLS READY TO CRUSH ME ALL AROUND ME AND A BLAZING FIRE RIGHT BELOW ME AND A DEEP CANYON BELOW THAT!!! TO MAKE IT EASIER, I RUBBED GASOLINE ALL OVER MYSELF!!!"

I might get it though, it sure is enjoyable.

of course he was one of the cleverest orcs and was soon due for a promotion for his tact and guile lol

Whoa, this game looks great! Thanks Krynn. I'd like to play it now, but well... my crappy internet and my damn computer... We'll see tomorrow

I hope that someone will put a torrent with this demo soon.

So, what weapons/spells can you use?

As far as weapons go you have access to a one-hand sword, two shields (Orc and Regular), dual daggers (both have to be used at the same time), a cleaver, a wooden mace, and a bow. For spells you have access to a generic firebolt spell that is near useless, an awsome freezing touch spell that can also freeze patches on the ground, and an explosive trap spell that one-hit kills everything in the demo. For abilities you can backstab with points into stealth and leap/stun and disarm with points into melee.

Really, though, it is so easy to simply use the environment to kill everything actually taking the time to use just magic or melee is both inefficient and far, far more difficult. Mana regeneration is either nonexistant or extremely slow, so your bar can only be refilled using potions which you have a finite number of. Even with points into melee you do more damage by kicking barrels and proceeding to coup-de-grace. The bow is fairly effective if only because while in hiding monsters will choose to stare around blankly at their environment while being pelted with arrows rather than seek cover.

Is it possible to backstab without being undetected/stealthed? I've tried using it on enemies I just stunned by kicking them, but no go.

It was good fun, but that guys voice acting is absolutely terrible. I was kindof expecting to beable to atleast try one of the powers (ice/fire) that I saw in the HD video.

It's good marketing on their behalf though because it does tempt me to buy the full game.

Ahahaa I heard that you can noclip around the trigger that ends the demo and you can fight the cyclops. Now only to get console/cheats working

I'm not that impressed with the demo. Fighting is ok and kicking Orcs to their doom brings a smile, but nothing really stands out. It doesn't look particularly good either - very brown and drab - and runs considerably worse than HL2.

After initially being hyped for this game i'll wait for some reviews and impressions before parting with some cash, and only then after a full upgrade. At the moment Dark Messiah feels quite average.

I liked it. I just hope they fixed the performance issues. Episode 2 looked way better than this, and ran a lot better as well at higher settings. Dark Messiah was near unplayable for me.

did you just "worse then hl2?" do you have a really low end system??? also could someone please post some pics i still have like an hr and half to go stupid overloaded servers.

AMD 64 @ 2.7 gig, 1 gig ram, x800xtpe - not the highest specs around, but HL2 runs well. Dark Messiah runs worse at much lower settings (and looks pretty crappy while doing it). I'm sure it looks decent with everything maxed at a high res at a decent frame rate.

Great graphics (design, technical, etc.), very fun gameplay that I've played through multiple times finding new tricks and traps (and I spent five minutes kicking a goblin head around before knocking it off a cliff...and plummeting to me death following it), and a seemingly intresting story.

The problems are, limited imersion with all the UI and first person talking and it did not run well. It was unplayable on the settings I used for HL2:EP1 (maxed all but no AA) and I could not even run it on the recommended levels for some reason (I had to drop textures to medium). I assume they still have alot of optimization to do.

I might buy it (and I rarely get new games).

Guys add this to the games command line (right click -> properties and paste this after the quotes)

+sv_cheats 1 +bind n "noclip"

Then when u get to the bottom of those stairs use noclip and go through the walls into the cave. That way you bypass the trigger that ends the demo and you get to fight the cyclops (AI doesnt seem to be completely finished but It can do some cool stuff). And enjoy the very gory end of that monster :D

A couple of guys at the facepunch forums are working hard at trying to get an infinite orc spawner going....but its very hard as it doesn't use the same version of hammer as hl2, or something like that.

This game looks superb with the graphics all on high. It's by far the best looking source game. Gameplay is very fun, the fighting is more interactive than Oblivion also, while maintaining the same style. I just might have to pick this one up.

Lol thanks for the info. That was a cool fight.

np. I did feel kinda bad though when he was holding his eye in pain and then fell to the ground lifeless :( .

I would post the link to the facepunch forums, but most likely the mods go crazy and snip the link. Also they're trying to get multiplayer coop working on the demo. As well as npc spawners. One guy already unlocked all spells and skills (he uploaded a save, I would post it but everyone including myself whose tried it has experienced ungodly lag/fps drop that makes it really unplayable.)
