Diablo 3 announced

Yeah, this thread turned to Warcraft lore, and I stopped paying attention to that after Warcraft 2 :p

Well we're comparing the WoW rape of WC2 and 3 lore and characters to what people fear they might do in Diablo. Hopefully they wise the feck up and write something interesting instead of taking the easy route of old good guy = new bad guy! noes!

I blame instance designers more than Metzen for the state of WoW's lore, so I think Diablo can safely sidestep a lot of that crap. If they turn Tyrael into a baddie, I just hope they make it interesting and understandable. Not like Illidan who went from sympathetic antihero to generic evil overlord.

Deckard Cain is the real villain of Diablo 3.

"You never stayed"

"You never listened"

"AND NOW YOU SHALL PAY"

Metzen's just as bad.

Deckard Cain aroused another, albeit more slight, pet peeve of mine. If they're going to use the same voice actor for Cain that they've used all along, then why the **** won't they bring back Clotsworthy for Jim Raynor?!

Bah, I really need to get off this train of thought. Diablo 3's announcement should be a time for celebration!

Metzen's just as bad.

He's had his share of slipups as well, like the whole eredar/draenei retcon. But I distinctly remember reading somewhere that the instance designers had a large responsibility for the "WHO TO TURN EVAL NEXT?!" decisions.

Maybe I just don't want to believe that the same man who drew me into his universes long ago is finally losing it. :(

Video games are serious business.

Amirite?

Metzen is just a writer faced with basically the ultimatum of jumping ship altogether, or driving plot-lines completely into the ground for WoW. It's really not his decision - they run it by him and may ask him to write a quest or two or how he wants to execute things.. but ultimately I think he probably feels tired of being forced to write up excuses. He's even posted about it himself (after the Draenei fiasco).

An ongoing joke with a guild member and myself was saying that Metzen spends his entire day with a gun in his mouth.

I watched a video of him at a blizzcon panel, talking about making lore decisions because something would be "awesome" or "badass". Didn't hear him mention consistency once.

Holy ****. You guys even know the names of the writers for World of Warcraft? Sweet jesus...

Also the writer of Warcraft 2 and 3. Which were aweshens.

Ditto. I don't pay attention to specific people in games. Valve is the only one I know anybody's name in. Gabe...and...that's it :p

It's sort of mind blowing. I don't know, I'm not completely on the outskirts here, because I played WoW hardcore for a few years, and I did enjoy the story because it added some sort of nostalgic and epic value to the game, but I just took it at face value; I wasn't going to complain about stuff not in the game - lore wise anyway.

I probably wouldn't have even picked up the game if it wasn't based in the Warcraft universe. And I don't think it's a matter of taking the game's story too seriously or whatever. I don't roleplay or buy all the books/comics. But I appreciate good story, which I think all the RTS games had. And so it's irritating when it seems like a developer is just giving up on that side of things. Story can and should be flexible to accommodate the actual game, but these grievances don't smack me as being due to some inherent incompatibility. The writing is just flat-out lazy. Most of these boss encounters and their respective buildups could have been written in a way to satisfy both lore fans and people who don't care about it. Instead it feels like every multifaceted character either gets beaten down into generic "evil" insanity or just stops making sense altogether. I don't have a problem with killing major characters in an instance. I do care when it's justified in a thoroughly half-assed fashion.

Of course, I say this as somebody who used to repeatedly read the manuals for entertainment purposes. But I'm not the only one dissatisfied with WoW's lore. And I bet that if Alyx showed up in Half-Life 3 as a Combine assassin with threadbare (or nonexistent) reasoning only to callously meet her end by Gordon's crowbar, a lot of people here would be similarly disgruntled.

Another thing in WoW that really ground my gears was Kargath Bladefist. I mean wtf, he was badass in WC2 and suddenly he appears in the Burning Crusade as a 5man boss with no explanation to how he even got to that planet, let alone the circumstances behind why he went evil. Nobody even tried to 'redeem' him like Thrall did with Garrosh in WC3.

Even better was Teron Gorefiend just chilling in Black Temple with absolutely no explanation. Disappointing considering his quest chain in Outland.

I think that cemented for me that the designers no longer really cared. Alas, that probably won't stop me from getting suckered back in come WotLK. =\

Srsly, do we have a release date yet?

The designers care but not in a way you'd think they should. Getting that far in WOW means they've raped your wallet sufficiently and they can throw whatever the hell they like at you. You'll still play it no matter how stupid it is.

It's not that big of a thing, you know who Marc Laidlaw is don't you? And Laidlaw only has Half-Life, Metzen is behind Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo all rather popular games with detailed worlds and rich history's.

If you walked up to me on the street and said "Marc Laidlaw" I would be like who the hell is that. I'll forget who it is in a matter of days.

Are people here implying that it's somehow wrong to know these names?

Yeah, I guess so.

You guys know the names of movie directors, actors, and actresses... what makes knowing the name of famous software developers, story writers, etc. so much different?

I only know the names of actors and actresses who get ragged on a lot on the news. :|

Haha, yeah. I hate when people are talking about how good so and so directors movies are, and then as me what I thought. I just shrug and say "Iunno". Then they go on about how I can't truly appreciate movies until I know the director and all his previous movies.

*sigh*

I've just got a memory like a sponge so I tend to know a lot of movie related trivia and historical facts and all that.
But when it comes to video games, I really don't pay attention to the inner workings.

Well it's likely Blizz won't consider anything that happened in WoW as canon - or at least, nothing major - and just ignore it completely when it comes to War4. Thus, the designers probably lost interest in maintaining continuity as it's virtually pointless.

I have trouble remembering the names of people I met today. It's a long shot for me to pay enough attention to someone I'll never meet and be able to recognize them.

I just don't care enough. The obvious exception is when I am inundated with the person on a regular basis. It just seems strange to me how people can blurt out some video game writer and know things about them.
