In the middle of reviewing Dragon Age, I had a couple vacation days scheduled. During my long out-of-state weekend, the game was constantly popping into my mind â?? how I could have won a fight differently, or how I might spend my next few talent points. As soon as my flight landed back in Minneapolis, I didnâ??t even fight the urge; I drove straight into the office and spent an entire Sunday night in front of the computer fighting darkspawn and saving Ferelden. The number of titles that can foster this level of dedication and obsession are few, and Dragon Age: Origins is among the best of them.

short review but sounds promising

Yeah sounds good so far, though he didn't touch too much on what I'm most interested in.

All the media they've released for this game has made it look like trash, but I've been hoping it might actually be good beyond the shitty advertising.

First review? I think I'll hold out for EDGE or RPS view on proceedings before making a decision.

The promises were for a deep, mature and immersive game. That review is uplifting.

He spent an entire sunday night playing a videogame. What a nerd.

I know, thats some serious dedication to his job.

It must of been hard work, playing a video game that he obviously enjoyed greatly for a whole day.

I have been waiting for this one since they announced it WAY back in 2005 (I think). The Baldur's Gate games and the rest of the Black Isle stuff is some of my favorite gaming software ever. This will hopefully be along those lines. Good reviews so far (not like I care anyway). I also can't wait to get the PC version since it was supposed to be out in March but was delayed thanks to EA and their consolidated marketing push to include consoles. :|

With Alpha Protocol on pre-order as well as Red Faction and a bunch of other games to finish I'm in no rush. ;)

I hear Alpha Protocol is getting pushed back to next year now :(

I'm gunna wait for a price drop on this game, I don't really know if I can add another double digit hrs game

That just sounds so backwards.

actually i've been watching more and more videos on this game and it looks awesome. who knows, i have an extra $500 in my checking account because I've been saving lately but games like this look awesome. I also image the PC version is the best way to go right?? it also comes out first right??

I meant that you're waiting for a game with a huge amount of playtime to cost less. The way you worded it made it sound like you would pay full price for a game with <9 hours.

no, its sad but I have both hundred hour games and 6 hr games all stacked about 30 feet high (some digital too) that i have never touched. i really fear i'm going to be this guy in the future but selling more games than anything:

Is it possible to rape dragons in this game? If so, I think I just may look into it.

Honestly though, I'm more interested in Borderlands atm.

Yeah that's what I've noticed as well, but a lot of places have pulled back their dates on it. I hope you're right and it's not true. It looks ace.

impressions of Dragon Age ..sort of:

from the interwebs:

Listening to a german podcast about dragonage and the reviewer has played 40 hours so far and is hyping it as awesome. He said something like the possibility of 10 minute conversations, 20 minute bossfights etc apparently its a real pc rpg. he talks briefly about dwarf gay sex but its apparently its not as annoying as ****. they made comparison to risen, dragon age is very linear and story driven while risen lacks story and has a giant map to discover etc

I've never brought a Bioware game that I've been disappointed with. I don't see this one being any different.

It's a fantasy version of Mass Effect. Bioware's plots are all made out of one matrix and while their execution is flawless, they can't quite go out of their way to make a game with a plot other than "EPIC save the world EPIC ancient enemy EPIC protagonist is special forces EPIC you have teammates with personality problems they can't fix on their own EPICEPICEPIC".

Yeah, they have been epic spamming while presenting ToR as well. "You don't just want to play as a grunt, but you want be Boba Fett or Han Solo. It has to be EPIX!!!1!" Well, Bioware, I don't.

That's why I like Obsidian. I can play a grunt, but I don't have to. I just hope ME2 will be an improvement and feature something interesting for a change.

Do you watch the Lord of the Rings and say out loud "Meh, it's good ... but they're just obsessed with being epic. Boooooring."

If you're complaining about a fantasy game being epic, then you might want to find another genre.

No, because its an adaptation of the original epic fantasy book.

If you actually read my posts, you'd understand that I'm arguing against Bioware's plot recycling.

The original Lord of the Rings books were plot recycling, under those terms. Epics, including fantasy epics, are old hat. They were around far before Tolkien came along.

So you may need to define this further for me. In what way do Bioware "plot recycle" in a way that's bad?

Uh, I already wrote that? Mass Effect and Dragon Age have basically the same plots, the lead character is a special forces dude/dudette, there is the usual ancient evil arising, the Plague/Geth mysteriously appearing, stalemates in the beginning etc.

Their execution is good, but their originality is sorely lacking.

You do realise that Dragon Age is not even released for another month, therefore comparing the plots is effectively pointless? You don't know enough about the Dragon Age plot to make such a judgement yet.

I was kind of hoping for a comparison of currently released Bioware games to support your opinion.

The plot of Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2 are almost identical bro stop trying to defend Bioware.

The combat in this game is gonna suck. Its not like oblivion where you click the mouse and your character swings his sword as you click, its like you click ounce and you wait for it to complete a combo like The Witcher game. That system feels weird to me anyone else feel the same way?

Dont get me wrong im definitly gonna get it cause i love exploring and finding treasures and armor and stuff, plus graphics are great.

That's because combat in Dragon Age is tactical, derived from the beloved turn-based school. On the contrary, Oblivion, Gothic, Risen and so on are action-rpgs. Two different genres. Put the word action in Dragon Age and you've lost my money.

Agreed, I really live the combat style used, feels like home really.

Considering this game is a spiritual successor to the Baldur's Gate series, I'd find it weird for any other combat system to be in place.
