I know another guy already has done this, but he seemed to leave the forums so I couldn't try and work with him on this project ( to DX Warlock anyways).

So here is my effort, Music Inspired by HL2 - http://www.mcquades.co.uk/luke/music/HL2.mp3 .

Its about 2 and a half mins, and is about 3.9mb

Feel free to give me feedback - you can even tell me its a bag of sh1t3 if you don't like it.

Cheers,
Dinkle

its pretty good except a few sounds sound a little off beat/random
edit: also the gman speaking is kinda odd

Thanks for the feedback ne0, but as for you Fleabaine? Why does your rank read Zombie when you are a Mod :x ?

The beat is generally good, but there's no direction to it - is it a loop from a CD, or did you compile it yourself? It could do with some variation, perhaps more flamsnare or another hit sitting on top of the main snare ( probably acoustic or processed acoustic ) to add impact during the more climactic bars. The general ambience is nicely done, but there's no chordal structure or variation there that I can hear - which may be down to taste, I know, but I was waiting for a bassline or pad to kick in. Go easy on the processing with the Gman's voice - it was well done up until about half way through the piece, but after that the eq.'d echo was a little too much.

All in all, a polished piece, but with a little less structure and direction than I would want to listen to. Good effort :)

What software/hardware do you use?

Hey Jondy, cheers  for the feedback. I programmed the beat myself on my Electribe SX. Then I threw it into Cubase and made some small variations (most of which happen towards the end of the piece). The 'melody' (which is a mix of piano and choir-pad) is a quite atonal, so any chord structure or bassline would be beyond my skill. I did try with a bassline, but I am usually crap at constructing them separately to the top-end.

As for the G-man, agree with you. I will probably go back and do some more work on it, but I was rushing to finish it. Equipment I use:
SOFT: Reaktor 4, Cubase SX, Ableton Live Delta, Sibelius, HALion, Sound Forge, NI Limelite Solo.
HARD: Electribe SX groovebox/sampler, Delta 44 soundcard, Wharefdale 2.1 Diamond Monitors, consumer Casio keyboard

Good call on the gear you're using, you do any paid work with that?

I'm on an E5000 sampler, Nova synth, Spirit16ch mixer and Tannoy Reveals running offof a PC w/SX, ACID music, Sound Forge 7, the Waves plugins and an Audiophile 2496.

Good job on the programmed beat, sounds nice n' tight. What are you using for the piano and choir-pad?

No paid work yet - I need to raise the standard of my work considerably, but I am looking for some mods to work on, maybe get into sound design.
For piano, I used a modified patch on PlugSound Free. The pad is a mix of a preset on the reaktor Juno synth, and a choir sample in Halion. I have a digital piano in my dining room, and its a hassle to connect it up to my computer but I'll be doing that shortly because I have to get some compostions realised for my music coursework.

I've not heard much of the Nova synth, or E5000 sampler. Are they any good?

btw. I've got a post in the Help Wanted/Offered forum with links to some of My Other Stuff .

Both are quite old, really, and could be done in software more efficiently, but I do love having fat boxes with displays :D

Gonna check out on plugsound free, sounds good.

You in college on AS/Alvl?

I'm in college doing A levels. How about you?
I recently started paying attention to the old keyboard thing in a music room and its a Roland D10 synth. So I looked around for info on it, and am starting to get to grips with a (gasp) hardware synth! Its a beast to program, but its got good potential at making strange noises. I am beginning to feel that hardware is the future  ("but I thought garlic bread was the future")

re: plugsound - it is a rompler with few but good sounds.

the best hl2 music is the theme tune for Codename Gordon.

yours is pretty good though, some of it sounds a bit wierd.. i dunno, kinda random.

Heh, interfaces are the future - software already dominates the market, and interfaces that the future software will need is hardwares' future. So you could argue that hardware is the future, but it will be fully dependant upon software and as such the two kindof walk hand in hand.

Yeah, I'm doing AS music at Exeter College this year, going well :)

Shall download plugsound, tk.
