Empires Mod Released!

i tried to download this game 5 times using the only mirror that worked, and each time it timed out at about 180mb, (about half way through the download)

so i tried using a bit torrent, and i just have yet another corrupted file, it installs and then crashes when i try and join a server,

i cant be bothered trying to download this game anymore, one day is more than enough to get 50 downloadable games but having this much hastle with just one mod is stupid.

thank god red orchestra is out soon, it will make valid the reason i didnt get dod source, at last a proper ww steam mod with vehicles, the one reason dod:source will be old hat is that it didnt include vehicles, it is the same game as dod but with ragdoll physics... WOW!..... really worth spending money on.... i think not...

i did post ideas for dod source when it was in the making, had those ideas been taken on board dod_s would be better than red orchestra, unfortunatly the direct porting ( the maps are the same size, the sound is unrealistic, and there are no vehicles ) makes it just a ragdoll version of dod.

and i cant blame the Empires crash on hardware since i have a 7800gtx with appropriate hardware to supprt it (i get 120fps in cs:s all settings high vsynch on)

basically what im trying to say is dod source should be better than red orchestra (it wouldnt even be difficult) and had it been more succesful it would have made tons more money.... duh!

i hope that hl2-episode1 (or whatever you are calling "half life 3" ) doesnt end up being the same as hl2 with just another load of buildings to run through, there has to be something new, not just plot but gameplay, the valve attitude to dod:surce leaves me wondering whether anything that is released for sale will be original, so far i think the FREE mods are better all round.

why spend money on dod:source when dod is just the same with slightly worse gfx, and why why oh why didnt they include vehicles in dod:source, all they had to do was mod the buggy from hl2!

sometimes i think other developers are spot on, red orchestra is everything i thought dod:source should have been, not only that but its cheaper for the gameplay value!

to those of you that downloaded empires succesfully i say WELL DONE!

and to the guys/gals that posted the mirrors on the empires site please renew them because only the top one works, and it always cuts out just before 200mb gets downloaded.

and even if you do that i wont download it because first impressions are everything and the word that springs to my mind is "shoddy" if you cant host a file it doesnt say much about the team/mod

nb> dod:source team

i hope nexttime you look at other games and take hint of the fact that maps are getting bigger vehicles are standard and if i wanted to play dod i wouldnt buy the same game for source, its the same as the attidude towards hl source, making the same game on another engine is likened to my kid shitting in a nappy or a newspaper..... it doesnt make a difference and it sure as hell doesnt impress.

NB

i hope that red orchestra puts dod:source to shame and relegates it from steam community, i didnt buy it as i have played it on a friends server and never gone back, its worse than the original, even unreal tournament included vehicles years ago. i suppose it shows how much thought goes into gameplay from the unreal modding community, lets face it unreal-t isnt exactly a great ponderer.

long live the red orchestra it has everything i wanted from dod:source and much more, its almost as if they read my ideas for dod:source and used them to help make a better game, all my ideas and more have been included in RO

whats up with that?

wow, thanks for a really long rant about a few very different topics. ;) Im sorry you havnt got the file downloaded yet, seem like 10,000 other people have done so tho. Although we did have trouble in the few hours, i think there are plenty of good mirrors now.

DOD:S is DOD with slightly better graphics? Do you have any clue what you are talking about? How about DOD:S is nothing different from DOD, or the sounds are unrealistic. DOD:S has one large ace ,that is sound it is top notch. I get the feeling you never even played DOD:S.

Red orchestra is the best server emptier ever. And they the hell are you ranting on about dod:s and red orchestra?

Is there a way to change the camera in commander mode? Like zooming in/out or rotating the camera. Sorry if I missed something. Oh, and yes, I’ve read through the players guide on their website, didn’t see anything there.

Pretty good mod so far, it has a lot of potential of being a fantastic mod imo. The only major gripe I have with it, which also been addressed a bunch of times before, is the lag.

I've played a lot on my own server to get into the mod better, got hang of the commander mode a bit and the research tree.
I like how you can customize the vehicles just like in Earth 2150. Love that, good job.

Anyways, going to try out it more tomorrow and perhaps try to find a good server. :)

by default hold down 'z' to zoom in and out (move the mouse) and 'x' to rotate the view in commander view.

If they get some of the visuals up to par, try and resolve the lag issues as much as possible considering what they're doing and tweak some other bits and pieces (build times + research times seem to be massive considering some of the stuff going on) the team will be well on par for a good little game...

Though I stand by my earlier statement about them possibly getting out the door too early in comparison to iron grip + nuclear dawn - I suspect Empires has to get more polished really quite quickly.

Man, I rock at commanding :D
Just had a blast, 3 hours of Empires do you good :p
But unfortunately, I crashed like five times D:
The lag is agreeable, some servers have it more than others.
Commanding is great, you should have at least tried it once. More often than not, servers don't have commanders.
Oh, and to exit the commanding vehicle, press "e".

First off we ought to start some discussion on empires elsewhere than its D/L thread now... (Sub-Forum :O?)

My straight opinion is that, (Excluding all current lag/crash issues) the game is very good, gameplay wise it is all there, every last bit. It is quite complex and deep (Look at the rank-up stuff, or the tech tree for some examples).

Its primary issue right now is graphics. Any good animators out there, apply and help them out, apparently they don't even have one (Using CSS/HL2 stock ones).

If you've developed the handy, and apparently rare, ability to get over graphical annoyances and ugliness, you'll find a very good game. Commanding is alot of fun with a good team that listens to orders and can accomplish objectives. Vech-less combat is pretty good, lag hurts here, but if you play on the 2-3 good servers it can be fun. Vehicle wars are good too, the best map for it seems to be Canyon when one side decides to fortify and the other make a secondary vehicle base to crush them with.

Just a side note, I downloaded via the torret supplied on page 2 or 3 I believe of this thread. Got up to 120 or so, only took 2 hours.

Off to make the discussion threads in a more appropriate forum...

omg the lkag is unberable i played on a west coast server my ping was 46 everyone elses was like 400 there was one other guy with a ping of 30

Red orchestra it's on Unreal engine NOT Source
BF2 can offer u more (although it was made by some morrons who patched the game so some people will suffer and some n00bs will have fun)

DOD: S it's another new feeling , yet i must agree i would except them to put in more new ideas. however the community is not dynamical with that will.

but it's all getting off topic -__________-"

as some of you can atest the vehicle code isn't perfect yet. for those admins who'd like a bit less laggy play at the expense of less/no vehicles type in emp_sv_max_vehicles in the console and spread the word.

Man, I love the game..but the bugs are so annoying It's not worth playing.

Just so I can get a good server..I make one my self and make it maxplayers of 6. Which is still fun..until my game randomly crashes, therefore the server goes down.

Don't release...EVEN A BETA, if it can't handle normal gameplay. I was driving in a jeep when all of a sudden it just crashes.

Do a lot of INTERNAL betas before releasing the real thing.

It's a public beta. Betas crash. If you don't like crashing, don't download it when it clearly says beta.

so i'm back again from some playtesting it.

Yes you are all wright by say its lagy, but mention that there is a lot of stuff that is awesome. Like the skill system, the building system ans so on.....

The game has a lot of potential.

The game hasn't crashed on my comp yet. But still there are few aggravating things. The movement with vehicles feels pretty laggy sometimes and the vehicles get stuck too easily.

I think one of the major failings is actually that the majority of players are numpties and think they're playing Deathmatch. In the two days I've tried to get into it, I've had nothing but people run around, ignoring commands, and even driving the command vehicle right into the enemie's area. I've not actually seen anyone build a base yet.

AL youve been playing on the wrong servers. This mod is actually much better than i expected it to be, its loads of fun. The only real gripe i have with it is the lag. Every server i can find is 200 ping+

There are only like three servers I can connect to. You need 16 players to play this properly, and then, you need 16 of them to be intelligent.

That'll never happen on a public server in Steam.

.....well sry to say that but i just played on a server where the commander had built and researched everything you can imagine.....

But all the other dweebs ran around drowning themselves in a pond, no?

After reading all the comments I think I'm gonna wait on this mod till they get things sorted out. Once that happens I'll see if we can throw up a few dedicated servers via www.modnation.org but there's no use in doing it till they take care of some issues.

Bizzarely lag isn't a big issue for me: most of the servers I've found (if they're not populated with bastards who throw reserved slots everywhere) tend to be sub-150 ping. Vehicles are incredibly jerky to drive/aim with, however.

But yeah, I'm yet to find a match where anything is actually happening. With a brainless commander (on no comm at all) you're left in a bizzarely large empty wasteland looking for something to do... and that doesn't change no matter how often your teammates shout "GIV US TNAKS" at the empty command vehicle... :|

meah, all servers get to laggy.
the only server with small ping is al ways populated and the last slot is reserved..
played on another server with a ping of 200, and besideds the lag, it could go smoith, but the weapon and enemy animations got me annoyed, and its impossible to aim with some of the weapons (mortar).

Most of the servers were laggy, but I found one server hosting Emp_escort and it had no lag whatsoever even though we spawned at least 10 heavy tanks, 2 artillery, and a few jeeps for good measure. Is the lag tied to having both teams have vehicles?

Also, the game is awesome, the customization was a godsend (the nuclear ML is a 1-hit kill on a medium tank or less), but I was dissapointed in that the research only improves vehicles, and not buildings or players.

Secondly, the skills are awesome, and make sure to look at the dropdown menu in the skill selection box to choose class-specific skills. I always choose the engineer's revive skill.

Lastly, this game is awesome!!!

Yeah, I've seen a few people who find that endlessly amusing, drive each comm vehicle into the opposing starting area. :|

Lol, whenever I enter a server, it's always "Beerdude! Good thing you're here, we need a commander stat!"
I'm one of the few commanders that actually commands people, you know :p

so what was that? i couldnt here you over the sound of that trumpet being blown

lol :p
Just lost two matches (me commanding), one of them was by a tank rush (and my slow researching :p) and the other one was by the fact that we fought against double the amount of enemies. Still held out pretty long, but when they got close my team started leaving :|

I played yesterday with this noob called SimonomiS or something :p

Nah, we had a great time. You just need a decent dedicated server to actually be able to enjoin the game.

Yeah, I sensed many times that Empires was trying to imitate the gameplay of BF2. Not that that's a bad thing, I actually thought many games were very fun :)

Well, considering it's originally a BF42 mod, that's not much of a surprise. We could almost induce BF2 is emulating us. But that would probably swell our egos a bit too much.

After finally finding servers that actually allow me to play, it's actually pretty fun. However, games tend to be erratic - you really have to depend on the rest of your team actually working together. And due to the rule of Internet Stupidity, I've only played three games when both teams actually played instead of acted out Counterstrike.

I like commanding personally. You have to be pretty competent though, as especially with a big team, there's so many orders to give, so many defenses to erect, so many technologies to research, and as always, so little time. Bieng an engineer is also a hell of a lot of fun. Although about half of the matches I've played in which I was simply a lowly engineer, some prick always gets in the comm viechle and drives it into enemy lines thinking it's a tank :| unsuprisingly, the map changes pretty quickly when that happens.

Commanding causes my machine to bomb, strangely enough. Might be something to do with resolution.

No, that's just the buggy coding :|
My personal record is crashing 5 times in a row on the same map while commanding \0/

I lost my last game just now because I was too damn lazy to command and just wanted to blast some crap. There was no commander, so we lost pretty quick :p

As in, as soon as I press F2 when in the Command Vehicle, it bombs. Doesn't happen on my other machine, just my powerful one.
