Yes, please tell us so people can post spoilers more efficiently.

Retard.

Don't even think about it. If you do find a way of doing it, do the smart thing and tell Valve directly.

However considering they would have encrypted it with some sort of key that is probably near impossible to guess, and certainly impossible to crack out of the gcf file, you won't get very far.

All of the files we've preloaded in the HL2 preload are encrypted and cannot be extracted out of the cache. Pretty much all you're gonna get out of viewing the cache file is the directory tree, which aint gonna get you far.

that's what pre-loading involves: getting the actuall game on your computer. It's up to you or not if you wanna spoil the game for yourself by taking a look at the pre-load files. Just don't spoil it for us. It's nice that this pre-load contains the soundtrack but please don't post anything specific as it might spoil the game for the rest of us. (Thank goodness I'm not pre-loading HL2.)

You can't access the preload files.

I dont want spoiliers either but....

I dont want to be spoiled at all either, but:

How is listening to the soundtrack of the game going to ruin anything???

The great thing about the preload is that 99% of the preloaders probably aren't even buying the game through Steam... retards. :(

Wow, whats the big f**king deal guy? I mean theres no rush to get your file, so why don't you just calm down. Everyone is entitled to do what they want, and valve is offering these preload files to everyone, so I see no problem in preloading the files. There's no set rule that people who are buying the hard copy of the game arent allowed to preload, so don't call us 'retards'. I don't know why I bother, you're probably 12 and so full of yourself that you won't care what I'm writing.

Because it has all of the voice acting. Technically if it wasn't encrypted then you could pretty much *listen* to the whole game :|

But they are fully encrypted. If anyone has preloaded the game and can open it in .gcf viewer, it doesn't matter as all the files INSIDE the gcf are encrypted and cannot be run.

it gives me a percentage bar, the first preload finished at 50%, the second preload seems to of started from where it left off, second perload is now on 58% after starting 15 mins ago.

Mines up to 100% but it stopped on 51%. I restarted Steam and it went up to 100%.

EDIT: and I'd imagine they'll be at least another preload. Unless Half-Life 2 doesn't include any maps.

btw, considering the game is 2 GB compressed and 3.5 uncompressed, are the preload files compressed ?

TESTING, I can post now or not. :(

edit: Listening to sounds can be more dangerous than reading scripts. I thanks valve for encrypting the files.

Who cares, I'm going to the store and buying the REAL copy anyway. I want the box and cd's and shiat. Oh yeah, if your preload gets stuck, try pausing and un-pausing it.

How big is this game my steam folder is at 2.4gig and the second preloading hasnt finished yet. By the way I dont have any game from steam installed.

The files in the GCF don't seem to be compressed.
This latest GCF is 972MB
After the files are extracted (all 4000+) they are 940+ MB
Maybe they are individually compressed and stay compressed even after extraction.

so its 2.5 compressed ok.. anyway i guess they arent compressed then so it isnt as close yet as i thought.. though i know i cant judge the gold status from how much is preloaded

By soundtrack i am assuming he meant the music, which doesn't contain voice acting. I too would have liked to listen to the music

I would assume you are greatly overestimating your own abilities.

Please be as eager to report your failure as you are your planned success.

:) I cracked it i have the sound files send me a PM and ill send you some soundtrack files....

Hey...If anyone can find any info pertaining to the second test in the .gcf, feel free to tell us that. Anything spoiler wise, though, we will hang you by your feet in the town square for all to see.

I never meant the voice acting, I said SOUNDTRACK which is just music. All I was saying is if someone post something about how to listen to that, how is that spoiling anything, its just music. It can keep us at bay until the game comes out.

No one is gonna crack the pre-load. It's not worth the effort. They will however steal the entire game once it's out. And easily too. Why spend all that work screwing around with encryption when you can just work on the CD-keys and download it from steam?

It's close to being out anyway.

It don't work even if you extract them. Tried every method - of course just to see that valve's done their job , I mean not to spread spoilers even if it was possible to open them. :)

I suppose that's a good sign - though I was tempeted to listen a couple of music files of HL2.

Hmm...I am actually worried about a key gen being made that can potentially get a ligit users key. It makes me feel uneasy, especially since Valve has such a hard time in taking off CD keys from accounts.

Bah, I hope Valve has thought of this pretty damn well.

This is kinda offtopic but may help me out, Anyone know any players to open .rws files with?
It's the audio format used with Broken Sword: The sleeping dragon.

I think by soundtrack most people mean the music rather than speech. I want to hear the track from the airboat E3 demo. :)

Pretty much all you're gonna get out of viewing the cache file is the directory tree, which aint gonna get you far.
It can still spoil you. ;)

The only thing I saw that looked strange was a file called Convert to 8bit in a folder called "test". Don't know if this means anything though.

There are about 10 .bcs files in the gcf (8 bit is one of them). They are some sort of batch conversion files

Valve needs to get this game out pretty sharpish - there's just too much info out there at the moment!

It's almost perilous coming into these forums now with all the spoilers around!

GET THE FR***IN THING OUT !!!

Phew, I was worried there for a while. Of course Valve knows better than to do anything THAT stupid.. Right?

Like adding the entire HL2 script in a CS:S beta?

nah.. valve wouldnt ever be that moronic...

oh fuxx.... they did.

*puts on flame suit, waits for 15 year old to defend the joke that is Valve and their "security"*

How many songs are there in the soundtrack?

There are 14 Halflife 1 songs and 30 Halflife 2 songs in the music folder =/. Theres also a few more including a ravenholm.mp3.

Well as long as they don't title any of the .wav's something like, 'G-Man's coming out'...

are the new songs composed by the same person who did the original songs? i sure hope so

Bah, I hope Valve has thought of this pretty damn well.

If you mean a keygen for making it work over steam you can rest easy. That is (almost) impossible since steam features server-side code for checking the serials. This is nothing new, and still hasn't been cracked. (Only way would be to make your own server so you could play on a cracked game server)
If you think of a keygen that would make installation of the retail version possible, then that's a certain. (unless that also feature server-side protection. Still there would be ways to go around that check)
I for one, will probably buy it on Steam so i can play it right away. I still want the box and the cd's though, so I'll probably end up buying it at retail too:p
